A YouTube video can be flagged because Content ID matched copyrighted material, because a copyright owner submitted a removal request, or because YouTube identified a separate policy issue. These are different processes with different consequences: a Content ID claim may block, monetize, or track a video, while a valid copyright removal request removes the video and results in a copyright strike. Read the specific notice in YouTube Studio before deciding what happened or what to do next.
Why did YouTube remove or flag my video?
“Flagged” is not one specific YouTube action. It can refer to a Content ID claim, a copyright removal request, or a restriction or removal under another YouTube policy. The notice in YouTube Studio is the best starting point: check its stated reason and the material or rule it identifies rather than assuming every restriction is about copyright.
- Content ID claim: YouTube detected a match between some of your video and material in its Content ID reference database. The claim policy may block, monetize, or track the video.
- Copyright removal request: A copyright owner or authorized representative asked YouTube to remove material they allege infringes copyright. If YouTube determines the request is valid, it removes the video and applies a copyright strike.
- Other policy action: Community Guidelines, trademark, Terms of Service, or another issue can also lead to a restriction or removal. These are distinct from copyright claims and copyright strikes.
YouTube describes Content ID as an automated identification system used by some copyright owners to identify and manage protected material. Automated matching can lead to a platform claim; it is not itself a legal judgment that a creator infringed copyright.
What does “Includes copyrighted content” mean?
It generally means YouTube has identified material in the video that matches a reference submitted to Content ID by a participating copyright owner. The match may concern only part of the video—for example, a music track or a segment of footage—rather than the entire upload.

The owner sets the policy applied to a match. Depending on that policy, the video may be blocked, monetized (sometimes with revenue sharing), or tracked for viewership. Outcomes can differ by country or region, so a video may be available in one place and restricted in another. A claim does not automatically mean the video was removed or that your channel received a strike.
Content ID claim vs. copyright strike: what is the difference?
| Notice or action | What it means | Possible effect on the video | Channel consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | An automated match to reference material supplied by a copyright owner. | May be blocked, monetized, or tracked; the result can vary by region. | A claim alone is not a copyright strike. |
| Copyright removal request | A copyright owner or authorized representative asks YouTube to remove allegedly infringing material. YouTube reviews the request. | If the request is valid, YouTube removes the video. | A valid removal request results in a copyright strike. |
| Other restriction or removal | An action under a separate policy, such as Community Guidelines, trademark, or Terms of Service. | Depends on the notice and policy involved. | Do not assume it is a copyright strike; read the notice. |
A copyright strike follows a valid copyright removal request, not merely a Content ID match. A Community Guidelines strike is a separate type of enforcement and should not be treated as a copyright strike.

What should I do about a Content ID claim?
- Open the notice in YouTube Studio. Find the affected video’s restriction or copyright notice and inspect the identified material, claimant, policy, and any regional impact shown.
- Choose a response based on your rights and goals. You can leave the claim in place, use an available Studio tool to remove or replace the claimed material, or dispute it if you have a valid basis.
- Dispute only when you can explain a defensible basis. YouTube lists having the necessary rights, believing a copyright exception applies, or believing the match is mistaken as possible grounds. Consider whether you can support that position before submitting.
- Track the response period. The claimant has up to 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. If an eligible appeal is available, the claimant has seven days to respond to the appeal.
- Weigh the consequences before appealing a blocked claim. An appeal may be a faster route for a blocked claim, but if the claimant rejects it, they can submit a removal request. If that request is valid, the video can be removed and your channel can receive a strike.
Giving credit, owning a copy of a song or video, or choosing not to monetize your upload is not, by itself, a sufficient reason to dispute a claim. YouTube does not decide whether your use is authorized or qualifies for a legal exception simply because you submit a dispute. Copyright exceptions depend on the circumstances and applicable law; they are not automatic.
What if YouTube removed the video and gave me a copyright strike?
First, read the removal notice for the reason, deadlines, and available options. If the notice is for a scheduled removal request, YouTube gives the uploader seven days to act before the removal takes effect and a strike is applied. Use that window to review the notice and consider the available response rather than waiting until the deadline has passed.

After a video is removed and a strike is applied, YouTube lists three ways creators may resolve the strike:
- Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days.
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request.
- Submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for an applicable exception.
A counter notification is a formal response, not a routine appeal of a Content ID match. Use it only if you have a good-faith basis, and follow the instructions and deadlines in the notice. If you are unsure about your legal position, consider getting advice from a qualified professional.

How does YouTube detect copyrighted material?
Some copyright owners provide audio or visual reference files to Content ID. When a video is uploaded, the system scans it for matches. A match can produce a claim, after which the owner’s configured policy determines whether the matched video is blocked, monetized, or tracked. These platform outcomes may vary geographically.
Content ID access is limited to qualifying copyright owners with substantial exclusive rights in original material that is frequently uploaded to YouTube. YouTube says it monitors use of the system and can disable access after repeated erroneous claims. The Copyright Match Tool is a related but distinct tool for copyright owners to identify copies or potential copies and choose follow-up actions, such as contacting an uploader, requesting removal, or archiving a match. Those owner tools are not the same as a creator’s claim-dispute workflow.

Automated matching has limits: a match is a platform process, not a court ruling or proof that every use is unlawful. Conversely, changing or editing a video does not guarantee that it will avoid detection. Do not rely on a particular edit, attribution line, or non-monetized upload to establish that you have the right to use material.
Does this matter for gaming videos and long YouTube streams?
Gaming uploads and streams can include several kinds of copyrighted material, including music, cutscenes, or other audio and video. A match may apply to a segment rather than the whole upload, and the owner’s policy—not the fact that the video is gameplay—determines the Content ID outcome. Check the actual notice for the identified material and policy.
If a video is part of a continuous or looped stream, keeping the stream online does not change the rights status of the video being played. A claim may still apply to the uploaded material, and a dispute still needs a valid basis. For material you do not control, review the rights and permissions before using it in a gaming video or stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. This does not prevent Content ID matches or grant rights to material in the video. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
