The game in that “Pokémon cards” headline is Wikipedia Gacha—also called WikiGacha—a browser game by independent developer harusugi. Released on February 25, 2026, it turns Wikipedia entries into collectible digital cards, then lets an automated battle system compare them using article-based statistics. Play it at wikigacha.com.
The comparison with Pokémon is about collecting cards and watching matchups, not about reproducing the Pokémon Trading Card Game. You do not assemble a Pokémon-style deck, choose elemental attacks or direct every move. Wikipedia Gacha is closer to a curiosity machine with automated stat battles.
What is Wikipedia Gacha?
Wikipedia Gacha is an unofficial web application operated by an individual developer, not a product of Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation. Its official site explicitly describes the service as unrelated to Wikipedia: https://wikigacha.com/.

That means a collection can contain celebrities, railway stations, diseases, plants, historical periods, mathematical ideas, fictional characters and local landmarks in the same pool. A person might be matched against a place; a scientific condition might face a television program. The absurdity of those pairings is the central joke.

Contemporary coverage by 4Gamer reported the February 25, 2026 release and identified harusugi as the developer: 4Gamer’s report. The game is designed for a browser rather than as a conventional console or downloadable PC release.
How to play
- Open https://wikigacha.com/ in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Use the Gacha area to draw article cards.
- Open the collection or encyclopedia view to inspect cards you have obtained.
- Choose a card in the Battle area and start an available match.
- Watch the turn-based result, then open the linked Wikipedia entry if you want to read about the subject.
The live interface can change. The official page has displayed a message about preparing local data, so first-load behavior, browser storage, language options and account requirements should not be assumed from older articles. If the page remains stuck, the gacha control fails to respond or your collection vanishes after clearing site data, try another standard browser and avoid private-browsing mode before concluding that the service is unavailable.
How the cards are rated
Reported rules convert Wikipedia metadata into combat numbers rather than judging how powerful a subject would be in a fictional fight.

These figures are reported mechanics, not a promise that the formulas will remain unchanged. They also produce deliberately strange outcomes: a famous subject may have high ATK despite a short article, while a long page can have strong DEF without its subject being especially important. A card’s rarity or battle strength is not a certification that its article is accurate, notable or morally admirable.
How collecting works
Available reports describe a gacha-style draw in which a pack contains five cards. A draw allowance was reported to regenerate at roughly one pack per minute, with guaranteed-rarity thresholds including an SR-or-higher reward after a set number of packs and an SSR-or-higher reward at a higher threshold. The exact counters and guarantees should be checked in the current help screen because the official site does not publish a complete English rules document.
One secondary reference has described a potential pool of more than 6.74 million cards. Treat that as a reported estimate based on the article pool, not as a permanent catalog size: Wikipedia pages, images, titles and language editions change.

What happens in a battle?
As described in the March 3, 2026 4Gamer hands-on report, the player selects an owned card, enters a match and watches an automatic, turn-based comparison. At that time, random battle was the available mode. A story mode was reported as planned, but that historical plan does not establish that it is available now.
The practical distinction from a conventional trading-card game is important:
- You do not appear to select individual attacks during the fight.
- There is no reported Pokémon-style elemental chart or move-management system.
- The result is driven by card statistics and rarity rather than tactical sequencing.
- The player’s main decisions are which cards to collect, inspect and submit.
Calling it a “trading card game” is therefore a loose description. It has collectible cards, rarity and battle presentation, but its automated system is much simpler than Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh!

Why the matchups are shareable
Wikipedia’s subject range supplies an effectively endless source of incongruous pairings. Reported examples include Ginkgo versus Natalie Portman, Snow Man versus National Foundation Day, a voice actor versus the Muromachi period, and matchups involving stations, illnesses, stars and television programs. The entertainment comes from discovering what appears next and then following the card’s article link. It can encourage spontaneous Wikipedia browsing, but that is incidental curiosity rather than a formal educational system. Article text, images and quality assessments can differ between language editions, and a game rating should not be mistaken for fact-checking.
Is Wikipedia Gacha free?
Coverage describes browser access without a conventional purchase price. Reports also mention daily bonuses and advertising or ad-viewing mechanics. During 4Gamer’s March 3 coverage, the advertising network was reportedly still being configured and test videos appeared instead. The current site may behave differently, so do not assume that ads are absent, that every reward is available or that registration and cookies are unnecessary.

Because the game is independently operated, features, monetization and uptime can change quickly. Viral attention was reported to have caused server instability shortly after launch; that is historical context, not evidence that the service is currently unstable.
Languages, links and platform caveats
A secondary reference reported interface support for English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese as of April 2026. Confirm the language selector on the live site before relying on that list. Interface language is separate from the Wikipedia database used for card entries: an article link may lead to a language edition you do not read, and equivalent pages can have different lengths, popularity and quality assessments.
Images introduce another qualification. 4Gamer reported that images may be fetched and cached when a card first appears. Wikipedia’s text licenses do not automatically give every image, logo or piece of article media identical reuse rights.

- Good fit: browser-game fans, Wikipedia users, novelty-game seekers and players who enjoy random collections or shareable results.
- Possible drawback: anyone seeking deep deck construction, active combat decisions or a carefully balanced competitive ruleset may find the loop repetitive.
- Practical expectation: treat it as a lightweight curiosity game operated by a small developer, not as a long-term Pokémon competitor with guaranteed support.
Bottom line
Wikipedia Gacha is worth trying if the premise itself makes you curious: draw an article, watch its metadata-driven card battle and click through to learn what the subject is. It is not a full Pokémon-style trading-card experience. Its appeal is the huge, unpredictable Wikipedia pool and the comedy of seeing unrelated subjects turned into opponents.
