“Wild West RPG” describes a genre, not one ruleset. If you want a concrete starting point, try Deadlands: The Weird West through Pinnacle’s free Test Drive, then use the current Deadlands: The Weird West Core Rules 2026 if your group wants to continue. Combat, crime, and survival rules differ between games, so identify the game and edition before relying on any specific procedure.
Choose a game before learning its rules
Wild West role-playing games can focus on historical frontier drama, outlaw adventures, or supernatural horror. Their shared setting does not make their rules interchangeable. This guide uses Deadlands: The Weird West as a named example, not as a universal ruleset for the genre.
Pinnacle describes Deadlands as a Weird Western set in an alternate history with monsters and magic; the 2026 product description places it in 1884. Its rules use Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE), but the publisher says the 2026 Deadlands core book includes updated SWADE rules. That distinction matters when choosing a book: an older Deadlands SWADE listing may require a separate Savage Worlds core book, while that requirement should not be carried over to the 2026 edition without checking. Pinnacle’s 2026 product page and its release announcement describe the current version.
Start with the free Deadlands Test Drive
Pinnacle’s New to Savage Worlds page offers a free Test Drive featuring Deadlands. The publisher says it includes pregenerated character archetypes, Power Cards, combat rules, and an adventure. It is a low-commitment way to see how this particular game feels at the table before buying a full rulebook.
#1 Best Overall
- Trailblaze your way across the Wild West!
- Mine gold to help your settlement prosper!
- Wrangle stray cattle for the largest herds!
- Tussle with bandits to protect your territory!
- Get the Test Drive from Pinnacle’s beginner page. Use the included archetypes rather than delaying play to build a character from scratch.
- Play the included adventure. It gives the group a chance to encounter the rules in context, including the combat material supplied in the introductory PDF.
- Decide whether the group wants more Deadlands. If so, confirm everyone is using the same edition and consult the rules for that edition before teaching detailed procedures.
- For a continuing Deadlands campaign, check the 2026 Core Rules. Pinnacle identifies it as the new default book and says updated SWADE rules are included.
Test Drive or 2026 Core Rules?

| Deadlands: The Weird West Core Rules 2026 | Pinnacle describes the book as the new default, with updated SWADE rules plus setting content, character options, gear, and powers. The physical book is listed in its catalog, and the product page describes the edition. | Pinnacle’s announcement listed the PDF at $19.99 USD when published; price and availability can change. Older edition listings are not necessarily inconsistent with the 2026 product. For example, Studio 2 Publishing’s listing for an earlier Deadlands: The Weird West – Core Rulebook (SWADE) says the Savage Worlds core rules are required. Check the exact edition named on the book or listing before deciding what your group needs: Studio 2’s earlier-edition listing.
Combat: use the chosen edition’s procedure
The Test Drive includes combat rules, making it the appropriate place to learn an initial Deadlands encounter. The available publisher descriptions do not establish enough detail to accurately explain turn order, attack resolution, wounds, or tactical options here. Those are rules questions, not genre-wide conventions: follow the combat section in the exact Test Drive or core book your group is using.

Savage Worlds is not limited to fights. Pinnacle describes the system as supporting narrative and miniature-based play and lists rules for combat, Dramatic Tasks, Chases, and Interludes. Those categories suggest a range of scene types, but do not replace the specific instructions in a Deadlands edition. See the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition catalog page.
Crime: agree on the game’s treatment of the law
“Crime” can mean playing an outlaw, investigating a robbery, evading a posse, or facing arrest and legal consequences. There is no single crime subsystem established for all Wild West RPGs, nor do the available Deadlands descriptions settle how those situations work. Before a crime-heavy campaign, check the chosen game’s rules and setting text for law enforcement, pursuit, arrest, and consequences; agree as a group on the kind of outlaw story you want to play.

Survival: check what the selected rules actually track
Do not assume every Western RPG has procedures for thirst, exposure, tracking, travel, or wilderness supplies. The available official Deadlands material does not establish a detailed survival procedure or universal equipment checklist. Consult the chosen edition to see which hazards it models mechanically, and decide with the game master how to handle anything the rules leave open.

Pinnacle’s site describes playing cards as part of Savage Worlds initiative, but that does not establish which physical accessories are required for every Deadlands edition or table. Check the rules you plan to use before buying cards, dice, or other add-ons. The 2026 core is also offered as a physical product through Pinnacle’s catalog; the free Test Drive remains the simplest way to try the game first. See Pinnacle’s catalog.
