Moore says. He describes its heart as Kratos and Atreus’s journey to honor Faye, but that is a creative intention—not proof of how the finished show will feel. Amazon says production is underway and has not announced a premiere date.
What did the showrunner say about the tone?
Moore described the intended tone as an epic journey anchored by a heartfelt story about Kratos and Atreus. In an interview with IGN, as reported by Video Games Chronicle on July 28, 2025, he said: “The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game, which is there’s this epic journey, this heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother”.

That describes the show’s aim, not a verdict on the adaptation. The series has not been released, so viewers cannot yet judge whether its performances, pacing, action, or visual style achieve that effect.
What story is Amazon adapting?
Amazon’s official series explainer says the story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Their relationship is the central emotional thread, set within the Norse world of the recent games.

Amazon says the adaptation will closely follow the last two God of War games, identifying the 2018 game and God of War Ragnarök-era story as its source material. The premise therefore centers on the father-and-son journey and its grief, rather than simply promising a recreation of individual game scenes.
Does “honor the games” mean a faithful, scene-by-scene remake?
No such promise has been made. Moore has framed the project as an adaptation and interpretation for live action. In comments from a Collider interview reported by GameSpot on July 28, 2025, he said: “Okay, we want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it”.

- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
That is a stated creative approach: preserve the source’s story, characters, spirit, and tone while translating the material to television. It does not establish that every plot beat, scene, or game mechanic will appear unchanged. Amazon also says game director Cory Barlog is involved as an executive producer.
Who is making the series, and who has been cast?
Amazon credits Ronald D. Moore as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. The official cast list includes Dave Bautista as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus, alongside Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Want to know the source story before the show?
God of War (2018) is the key starting point for the Norse-era story described by Amazon. GameSpot identifies it as a primary inspiration and lists the game for PC and PS4. The television adaptation is a separate forthcoming production; playing the game can introduce its characters and premise, but does not establish what the series will include.
