It is not known whether Dylan Larkin will play for Detroit again. The Red Wings said he requested a trade after the 2025–26 season, while Larkin said he was recovering from an upper-body injury and wanted to return to the ice. NHL insider Frank Seravalli has floated a “mutually beneficial” explanation for Larkin’s absence, but described it as a working theory—not a confirmed agreement or evidence that Larkin is done in Detroit.
What Larkin and Detroit have said
In a September 18, 2026 training-camp report, official Red Wings reporter Jonathan Mills said interim general manager Shawn Horcoff and Larkin addressed the trade request. The team said Larkin requested a trade after the 2025–26 season. Larkin said he had sustained an upper-body injury while training: “I got hurt in the gym working out.” He added, “I’m pushing to get healthy. I want to be out there.” Detroit’s camp report
That is the clearest public account of Larkin’s stated injury and intention. It does not say that Detroit and Larkin agreed he would sit out, nor does it establish when he might return.
What Seravalli means by “mutually beneficial”
In reporting dated October 1, 2026, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said Detroit had reiterated to him that Larkin was injured. Seravalli also described speculation about Larkin’s absence and said the team had not provided a return timeline. His report said Larkin had taken part in some portions of practice over the preceding two-plus weeks without much noted progress. Those are reported observations as of October 1, not an independent medical assessment.

Seravalli’s “mutually beneficial” explanation is explicitly a working theory: that Detroit may have accommodated Larkin sitting out to protect him from injury, continued paying him, and kept the situation amicable. The report does not establish that the club and player reached such an arrangement. The Malik Report’s account of Seravalli’s comments
Seravalli’s account put Larkin’s salary at $8 million; that figure is the report’s characterization and should not be confused with a verified cap hit or a full statement of contract terms. It also quoted an unnamed executive saying Detroit was $1.6 million above the salary-cap floor with Larkin on the books and that paying him for now worked for everyone. That is an anonymous source’s claim, not an independently verified team figure or an official explanation from Detroit.

Why a trade may be difficult
Seravalli’s report included criticism from anonymous executives about Detroit’s negotiating posture. One rival general manager characterized the Red Wings as “unrealistic,” saying they had “essentially asked for a younger version of Dylan Larkin back.” Another interested executive reportedly said Detroit had refused to define what it wanted in return.
Those remarks describe the sources’ views; they do not disclose a formal offer, a specific requested return, or Detroit’s official position. No competing trade packages or destinations are established in the cited reporting.
