Yes. In Hollow Knight, Fragile Charms break if the Knight dies during the normal Radiance fight. The Radiance is the final boss reached through the Hollow Knight, and the game does not treat it as a regular dream battle. The protection that stops Fragile Charms from breaking in ordinary dream-boss fights does not apply here. The one exception to watch for is Absolute Radiance, the Godhome-attuned version, where a death does not break the charms.
Why the normal Radiance breaks Fragile Charms
Fragile Strength, like other Fragile Charms, breaks when the Knight dies, unless the encounter has a specific exception. According to the Fragile Strength page on the Hollow Knight Wiki, the Radiance fight is not one of those exceptions. The wiki’s Radiance page states that the encounter does not count as a regular dream battle, which is why the usual dream-boss safeguard is absent.
What happens when you die in the Radiance fight
Dying in the normal Radiance fight is more punishing than dying in most boss encounters, because the fight does not simply restart. Based on the Hollow Knight Wiki’s description of the encounter, the sequence is:
- The Knight dies during the Radiance fight.
- Any equipped Fragile Charm breaks, including Fragile Strength.
- The Knight is returned to the Hollow Knight, and must defeat it again to reach the Radiance.
- Once the Hollow Knight falls, the Radiance fight is reached again, and the charm must be repaired or replaced before it provides its bonus.
Because the preceding Hollow Knight fight must be replayed, a single death costs both the charm and time.

Normal Radiance versus Absolute Radiance
The two fights are often confused, but they behave differently. The table below compares the two encounters on the points that matter for Fragile Charms.

The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Absolute Radiance page covers the Godhome fight and charm strategy. The cited sources support the Godhome exception for Fragile Charms but do not say whether the Hollow Knight replay or dream-battle classification applies in that fight, so those cells are left as not stated.

Fragile Strength costs and repair
Fragile Strength increases Nail damage by 50%. It does not improve Nail Arts, or the damage from Sharp Shadow, Dreamshield, and Thorns of Agony. The Hollow Knight Wiki lists the following in-game prices. These are Geo costs inside the game, not real-world prices, and the discounted figures apply while wearing Defender’s Crest.

Unbreakable Strength is the upgrade that removes the break risk entirely, which makes it the most reliable option for players who expect to die often in the Radiance fight.

Practical approach for the Radiance fight
- If you are still learning the fight: leave Fragile Strength unequipped, so a death does not cost a repair.
- If you want the Nail damage bonus: equip it only when you can afford a repair, or upgrade it to Unbreakable Strength first.
- If you are fighting Absolute Radiance in Godhome: the Godhome exception means death there does not break the charm, so the risk calculation is different.
