That was a positive update, not confirmation that Ortiz had made the final roster or was certain to play. The Brewers had monitored several injury concerns, and Murphy had said there was still concern during the bye week.
What is Ortiz’s NLDS status?
The latest reported outlook is that Ortiz was expected to be available for the NLDS. An October 2 CBS Sports/RotoWire report, citing MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, said Murphy described Ortiz as “progressing in the right direction” and expected him on the roster: CBS Sports/RotoWire, October 2, 2026. The wording describes an expectation; it does not establish that Milwaukee had announced its final roster or that Ortiz had appeared in a game.
What injuries were the Brewers monitoring?
The concern involved more than Ortiz’s right knee. MLB’s September 30 injury update listed a bruised right knee, sore oblique and groin issue. Murphy said, “There’s still concern,” and the club planned to be careful with Ortiz during the bye week: MLB.com, September 30, 2026.
Two days earlier, Murphy described Ortiz’s MRI results as “all good,” according to MLB.com. The knee was diagnosed as a bruise, while abdominal swelling was to be monitored; the club did not expect him to play the regular-season finale as a precaution: MLB.com, September 27, 2026.

What should Brewers fans take from the update?
- Availability looked likely: By October 1–2, the public outlook had shifted from caution to optimism about Game 1 and the NLDS roster.
- “Expected” is not “confirmed”: The cited reports do not establish that Ortiz was officially on Milwaukee’s final NLDS roster or had played.
- The team was still monitoring him: The knee bruise, abdominal swelling, sore oblique and groin issue explain why the Brewers remained careful despite the encouraging MRI update.
