Xbox has made a broad commitment to keep games from four Xbox generations playable and says Project Helix is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will play PS5 or earlier PlayStation games. Neither platform has published a complete next-generation compatibility list, so support for any particular game, disc, save, or service remains a separate question.
What backward compatibility is confirmed for Project Helix?
In a March 11, 2026 summary of Xbox’s GDC keynote, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” The same announcement says Xbox is “committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.” Xbox Wire’s announcement is a broad platform statement, not a title-by-title compatibility list.

Xbox has not specified in that announcement exactly which generations, games, or media formats Helix will support. It also does not establish that every legacy game will work, or that Helix will include an optical drive capable of reading older Xbox discs. The announcement says developer hardware alpha versions are planned to ship in 2027; it does not give a consumer release date.
Will PS6 play PS5 games?
Sony has not confirmed a PS6 backward compatibility policy in the official materials reviewed. That means support for PS5 games on PS6 is unknown—not confirmed, but not ruled out either. The same uncertainty applies to PS4 and earlier PlayStation games.

Sony’s past compatibility record does not settle the question. In 2020, Sony said more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were expected to be playable on PS5 at launch. That figure describes PS4 games on PS5 at that time, not PS5 games on PS6. Sony’s PS5 FAQ and PS5 technical overview are about PS5, not a PS6 policy.
How the confirmed statements compare
| Question | Project Helix / Xbox | PS6 / PlayStation |
|---|---|---|

| Generations named | Four generations of Xbox games are named, but the announcement does not provide a generation-by-generation Helix support matrix. | No PS6-supported generations are confirmed. |
| Every game supported? | Not established. The announcement does not provide a complete list or promise universal support. | Not established. |
| Disc and digital support | The announcement does not specify Helix disc hardware or which digital and disc entitlements will work. | Sony has not stated whether PS6 will support existing PlayStation discs or digital libraries. |
| Published title list | No Helix title-by-title list is included in the announcement. | No PS6 compatibility list has been confirmed. |
What current Xbox compatibility tells you—and what it doesn’t
Xbox’s current backward compatibility page illustrates why a four-generation commitment should not be read as a guarantee that every game or disc will work. Microsoft says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, while Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to selected titles. Features also vary by game, and Series S is digital-only. See Xbox’s backward compatibility information for the current details and catalog.

That is context for how Xbox compatibility can be selective; it is not a Helix compatibility list. The cited Helix announcement does not confirm that the same selection will carry over, nor does it say whether old discs will be usable on the future hardware.
Does Sony’s 2028 disc change affect PS6 compatibility?
No direct conclusion about PS6 compatibility follows from Sony’s physical-disc announcement. On July 1, 2026, Sony said “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” It also said the change would not affect games already released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format. The announcement concerns production of new-game discs; it does not say whether PS6 will read existing discs or run older digital games. Sony’s announcement is not a PS6 compatibility statement.

What to check before counting on an old game
Until each platform publishes detailed policies and supported-game information, check the specific game rather than relying on a generation-wide phrase. Compatibility can involve more than whether a game launches: the relevant platform may need to clarify disc support, digital ownership, saves, accessories, and online services. Xbox itself notes that features vary by title on its current compatibility page.
