No complete Xbox 360 Xbox Live shutdown date has been announced in the sources reviewed as of August 18, 2026. What did close was the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace: new purchases ended July 29, 2024. That closed storefront is not the same as shutting down sign-in, every online feature, or every game’s multiplayer.
What shut down on Xbox 360?
On July 29, 2024, the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace stopped selling new Xbox 360 games, downloadable content (DLC), and other entertainment content. Microsoft describes the change in its Xbox 360 Marketplace update. It was a storefront closure—not a stated end date for every Xbox 360 network service.
You generally can no longer use the old console storefront to buy a new game or DLC. Closing a store does not automatically erase licenses for content you already bought, though access can depend on your account, the item’s licensing and availability, and the console or service working correctly.
What still works?

This is a status summary, not a guarantee of indefinite support. Microsoft could change platform services, and publishers can retire game features independently.

Can you still play Xbox 360 games online?
Sometimes, yes—but there is no single switch that determines whether every Xbox 360 game works online. At least three layers matter:
- Your console and network connection: The Xbox 360 must connect and sign in successfully.
- Xbox platform services: The platform features a game relies on must be available.
- The game’s own online service: Its publisher-run servers, matchmaking, authentication, or other required services must still operate.
A game can launch and let you sign in while its multiplayer servers are shut down. Conversely, the store’s closure alone does not establish that a game’s servers have closed. Check the status of the exact game you want to play; don’t assume all Xbox 360 games have the same online status. Can you redownload games and DLC you already bought?
Usually, start with the Microsoft/Xbox account that made the purchase and look in the console’s download history or the relevant library area. Select the item and download it again if it is available. Make sure the console has enough storage.

Redownloading is not an unconditional promise that every historic item will always be recoverable. Check that you have the right purchasing account. Licensing problems, an inaccessible account, a damaged profile or hard drive, or an item that is difficult to locate can get in the way. Some DLC also needs the original game, a particular region, or a compatible edition. Microsoft has troubleshooting guidance for downloaded content.
Previously purchased DLC is not the same as new store inventory: the closure did not make discontinued DLC free. A game menu may still show a purchase option that can no longer complete a transaction through the old storefront. Whether DLC works on Xbox One or Series X|S depends on compatibility and licensing for that title.
Before resetting or selling your console, confirm that you can access the account that owns your purchases. Avoid deleting a local profile just to troubleshoot until you know you can sign back in and have considered whether saves have synced.
If Xbox 360 sign-in fails
A failed sign-in does not by itself prove that Xbox 360 services have shut down. Check whether there is a current outage, then work through the connection and account in order:

- Check the official Xbox status page.
- Confirm the console is connected to your network and run the Xbox Live connection test in the console’s network settings.
- Re-enter the credentials for the Microsoft account associated with the profile.
- If two-step verification is enabled and sign-in fails, consult Microsoft’s current Xbox 360 app-password guidance. An app password may apply in some account configurations; it is not a universal requirement.
- Only try downloading the profile again once you have the correct credentials and can recover the account.
Network, account-security, and profile problems can resemble a service outage. Check status before making changes that could leave you unable to restore a profile or access purchased content.
Will Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S play your Xbox 360 games?
Microsoft supports select Xbox 360 games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and says functionality varies by title. Check the official backward-compatibility list for the specific game. Compatibility is not a complete replacement for an Xbox 360: not every game is supported, and a compatible version may not preserve every legacy feature, DLC item, or online function.

- Digital games: A supported game you own may appear in your library when you sign in with the purchasing account.
- Disc games: Disc-based play requires a compatible console with a disc drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot read Xbox 360 discs.
- Game features: Saves, DLC, and online features vary. A newer console cannot revive a publisher’s closed server.

Keeping one makes sense if you play physical games offline, value original hardware or local multiplayer, own digital purchases you can still access, or want titles missing from backward compatibility. Before relying on it, test sign-in and confirm that you can access the account tied to your digital library. Redownload important purchases while you can, and check online support separately for each multiplayer game you care about.

If possible, test the disc drive, storage, controller, and network connection before buying, and confirm that the correct power supply is included. A second-hand disc can be a way to play a game no longer sold digitally, but it does not restore online servers or guarantee access to DLC.

If multiplayer is your main reason to buy, research the exact game first. Check whether its servers and matchmaking remain active, whether it needs a publisher account, and whether a backward-compatible version is available. A newer Xbox may offer modern features and access to some supported older games, but no current console plays every Xbox 360 title. A Series S is not a substitute for a collection of discs.
How to check whether one game still works online
- Identify the exact game, edition, and platform: original Xbox 360 or a backward-compatible version.
- Look for a current publisher notice about server, authentication, or matchmaking support.
- Check the Xbox status page to rule out a temporary platform issue.
- Test the game’s online mode, ideally with another player; a functioning sign-in alone does not confirm that matchmaking works.
- Check whether the title is backward compatible and whether its relevant features are supported on the newer console.
The practical distinction is simple: the Xbox 360 Store is closed to new purchases, while access to purchased content and online play depends on the account, platform, and individual game.
