Yes—an Xbox can update games while it appears to be off, but only when it is using a connected standby mode such as Sleep. The console must remain connected to power and the internet, and automatic updates must be enabled. In full Shutdown or energy-saving mode, background game updates generally wait until you turn the console on again.
What “off” means on an Xbox
Xbox has more than one power-off behavior. The key difference is whether the console remains in a low-power state that can maintain network activity.

How to enable automatic game updates
On current Xbox dashboards, the general path is:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open System.
- Choose Updates & downloads.
- Enable the available options equivalent to Keep my console up to date and Keep my games & apps up to date.
Menu names and grouping can vary slightly between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and system software versions. The game/app setting and the console-update setting are related but separate: enabling one does not necessarily enable the other. Xbox’s download support material provides the relevant update-management guidance.

Automatic updating gives the console permission to check for and download available patches. It does not guarantee that every update will start immediately or finish at a particular time.
Which power mode should you choose?
Choose Sleep if having games ready with minimal effort matters more than minimizing standby consumption. Choose Shutdown or energy-saving mode if reducing electricity use is your priority and you are comfortable checking for updates manually.
For the best chance of an overnight update, leave the Xbox connected to power and the internet, enable automatic updates, and use Sleep. Even then, a download can be delayed by a network outage, insufficient storage, Xbox service problems, or a game that must be closed before installation.
How to check for an update manually
If a game did not update automatically:
- Open My games & apps.
- Go to Manage.
- Select Updates.
- Review the list and start an update manually if one is available.
An empty Updates list usually means there is nothing currently available to that console, but it is not absolute proof if the Xbox is offline, services are unavailable, or the publisher has not released the patch to your game version, account, or region.

Downloading is not the same as installing
An Xbox may download patch data in the background while another activity is taking place, but applying the update can require the game to be closed. A running or suspended game may therefore continue to show an old version until you exit and restart it.
When you need a patch to finish quickly, close the game completely, confirm that the console is online, and check My games & apps → Manage → Updates.
Why your Xbox did not update while it looked off
1. It was using Shutdown, not Sleep
This is the most common explanation. Check the console’s power options and confirm whether it is configured for connected standby or energy-saving shutdown.
2. Automatic updates are disabled
Return to Settings → System → Updates & downloads and check both the game/app and console update options.

3. The internet connection failed
A disconnected Wi-Fi network, router restart, changed password, service outage, captive portal, or restricted network can prevent update discovery and downloads. Start the Xbox and run its network test before trying again.
4. The console was unplugged
A switched-off power strip, disconnected cable, or power outage prevents all background updating, including Sleep-mode activity.
5. Storage is full
Large patches may need substantial free space for both download and installation. Check internal and external storage, remove unnecessary content if needed, and retry the update.
6. The game was running or suspended
The download may be delayed, or the patch may not be applied until the title is closed. Quit the game and check the Updates screen manually.

7. The patch was not available yet
Updates can be staged, delayed, limited by region, or temporarily withdrawn. Another player receiving a patch does not necessarily mean your console is malfunctioning.
8. Xbox services were unavailable
Service interruptions can affect sign-in, update discovery, downloading, and licensing checks. Retry after services recover.
9. External storage was unavailable
If the game is installed on a USB drive, that drive must be connected and functioning. A disconnected, sleeping, or failing drive can interfere with normal updating.

No. The TV is only the display. It can be switched off while the Xbox downloads in Sleep, provided the console has power, internet access, suitable update settings, storage, and access to Xbox services.

Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S
The same practical rule applies across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: connected standby is the mode most suited to background activity, while full shutdown prioritizes lower standby consumption. However, power options, labels, and exact behavior can differ by console generation and system software. Use the current labels shown on your own console rather than assuming an older menu path is identical.
Special cases to keep in mind
- Disc-based games: The disc may still be required to launch the game, but patches are downloaded from Xbox services.
- Game Pass games: A subscription does not remove the need for game patches or an internet connection.
- Multiple consoles: Each Xbox downloads updates separately.
- Metered connections: Large automatic patches may consume significant bandwidth and may be delayed or undesirable on restricted plans.
- Cloud saves: Save synchronization and game updating are separate processes.
- Power interruptions: Sleep is not a guarantee against interrupted downloads in areas with unreliable electricity.
What about Xbox system updates?
Console system updates are controlled separately from game and app updates. If the Xbox has a system-update failure or cannot start normally, Xbox provides an offline system-update procedure as a specialized recovery method. That process is not the normal way to install game patches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Xbox update games overnight?
Usually, yes, when it is in Sleep, connected to power and the internet, and automatic game updates are enabled. Completion is not guaranteed if the network, storage, services, or game state prevents it.
Can I force a game update?
Start the console, open My games & apps → Manage → Updates, and start any listed update manually.
Will automatic updates use a lot of data?
They can. Game patches may be large, so consider your network quota or connection restrictions before leaving automatic downloads enabled.
