Most Nintendo Switch games work on Nintendo Switch 2, including compatible physical game cards and digital games—but not every title or feature is guaranteed to work. Nintendo recommends checking each game in its current compatibility lookup. Some games may not run, and others may need original Joy-Con or have a mode that works differently.
Can you play Switch games on Switch 2?
Yes, if the individual game is compatible. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. “Compatible” is the important qualification: differences between the consoles mean that some titles may be unsupported or may have incomplete functionality.
Compatibility can change as Nintendo tests games and releases updates. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2 game compatibility lookup to check a title before buying it, upgrading your console, or relying on a particular feature. A general list of examples is not a permanent or complete blacklist.
What “compatible” means for a particular game
A game may launch successfully without every mode, controller option, or accessory working as it did on the original console. Check these separately in Nintendo’s title information and the game’s requirements.

- Does it launch? Some titles may not be supported.
- Do all modes and features work? A game can have partial functionality issues even if it runs.
- Does it need original Joy-Con or a specific accessory? Joy-Con 2 differ in fit and sensors.
- Is the experience altered? A mode may be harder or differ from the original even when the game remains playable.
- Is there an update or Switch 2 Edition? These are separate from basic compatibility.
Games and features that may need original Joy-Con
Joy-Con 2 do not attach to some original Switch accessories, and the right Joy-Con 2 lacks the IR Motion Camera found in the original right Joy-Con. Nintendo lists examples where those differences affect particular features or play modes:

Can you use your old controllers and accessories?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. Switch 2 also cannot charge them: you need an original Switch console or a compatible charging grip or stand. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock by USB. See Nintendo’s controller and accessory compatibility information before counting on a particular accessory.
Other hardware has its own limitations. The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. For storage, Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards; a conventional microSD card can be used to view Switch screenshots and videos, but not to expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo’s compatibility table is the place to verify specific accessories.

Will your digital games and saves transfer?
System Transfer can move digital games, certain save data, and settings from a Switch console to Switch 2. Nintendo says transferred digital games are automatically redownloaded. A successful transfer does not prove that every transferred game is compatible: check the game itself in the compatibility lookup.
Nintendo also provides virtual game card management for compatible digital games and downloadable content across two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time, subject to its linking and lending rules. Do you need to buy a Switch 2 Edition?
No—not simply to play a compatible Switch game. Nintendo offers paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades for selected games, which may add improved image quality, smoother frame rates, new features, or modes. Selected games may also receive free updates that improve performance or add functionality. What changes, and whether an upgrade is offered, varies by game; check its current official listing for the details and price.
