No single resolution, bitrate, or encoder setting suits every PC, game, network, and streaming service.
What Windows 11 can—and cannot—do for streaming
Windows handles system updates, graphics routing, and game features; OBS handles scenes, capture sources, audio, and stream output. Treat them as separate parts of the setup. A Windows graphics change may solve a capture issue, but it does not determine the right OBS output settings.
OBS supports Windows 11, but compatibility alone does not mean a PC can stream every game at every resolution or frame rate. The workload depends on the game, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements page makes the same distinction: a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS.
Prepare Windows 11 and check GPU routing
Update before diagnosing performance
Install available Windows updates and graphics-driver updates through the usual Windows or hardware-vendor channels. Updates are a sensible baseline, not a guarantee of higher stream performance.

Choose a graphics preference for OBS and the game
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Select OBS or the game. If the app is not listed, use the option to add a desktop app and browse to its executable.
- Choose the available graphics preference, such as Power saving or High performance, then save the change.
- Restart the affected app before testing.
This matters most on laptops with integrated and discrete GPUs. OBS warns that Game Capture can fail when the game uses the discrete GPU while OBS runs on the integrated GPU. Check the assignment for both apps rather than changing only the game’s preference. See the OBS GPU Selection Guide.
Use windowed-game optimizations only when they apply
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations apply to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. They are not a general fix for every game or capture method. If you change this setting, restart the game before judging the result. Microsoft explains the feature’s scope in its Windows 11 windowed-games guidance.
Configure OBS with a practical baseline
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Open OBS and choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Answer the questions about whether you intend to stream or record, and select the relevant service and output preferences when prompted.
- Let the wizard evaluate your computer resources and network conditions, then apply its suggested starting configuration.
The wizard is a baseline, not a promise that a particular stream will look or run well. Check the destination platform’s current requirements and test your actual game, scenes, and connection. OBS describes this setup flow in its Quick Start Guide.

Add the capture source that matches what you are showing
- Game Capture: use for compatible 3D games. OBS lists this source as Windows-only.
- Window Capture: use when you want a particular app window rather than the entire desktop.
- Display Capture: use when the stream needs to show a monitor or desktop.
- Video Capture Device: use for a webcam or capture card. A capture card is only needed when bringing in external video, such as a console; it is not required for PC game capture or a webcam-only scene.
If Game Capture or Window Capture is blank or unstable on a multi-GPU laptop, check the Windows graphics assignments for both OBS and the game before rebuilding the scene.
Check audio devices and meters
- Open Settings → Audio and select the intended microphone and desktop-audio devices if OBS has chosen the wrong ones.
- Return to the main OBS window and speak or play audio. Confirm the relevant mixer meters respond.
- Make a short recording or test stream and listen back for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly loud audio.
A microphone is optional if your stream does not need voice commentary. OBS supports selecting and testing audio devices as part of its setup guidance.
Set output by testing, not by copying a universal preset
Review Settings → Output and verify that the selected stream output is appropriate for your destination. The right encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate depend on the PC’s available hardware, game load, connection, and the platform’s current ingest rules. Those platform-specific limits are not established here, so check the selected service’s official guidance rather than relying on a fixed number from a generic Windows setup guide.

OBS generally recommends hardware encoding when available because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware. It still uses system resources, and the best choice depends on the machine and workload. Compare whether a supported hardware encoder is available, how much CPU headroom remains, how heavily the game uses the GPU, and what output quality the service accepts. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide.
Test the complete setup before going live
- Open the game or app you plan to show and load the OBS scene you will use.
- Check that the picture is captured, the intended microphone and desktop audio meters move, and overlays or other sources appear correctly.
- Make a short local recording or run a private or test stream if your service offers one.
- Review the result for dropped or choppy frames, blank capture, audio problems, and image quality. Consult OBS statistics or logs if performance is poor.
- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the test. This helps identify whether the change actually fixed the symptom.
OBS encourages a short test rather than jumping straight into a first public stream. The test should use the real game and scene: an empty desktop may not reveal the load of gameplay, animated overlays, or multiple sources.

Keep Game Mode enabled as the starting point
OBS’s Windows gaming-feature guidance recommends leaving Game Mode enabled on updated Windows systems. Do not turn it off preemptively. If OBS reports a hardware-encoding conflict, investigate Game DVR/Captures and other recording or encoding applications that could be competing for encoder resources. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 version 1809 and later, so it should be read as conflict troubleshooting—not as a Windows 11 performance benchmark. Automatic Super Resolution is device- and game-specific
Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is not a universal streaming-performance switch. Eligibility depends on supported hardware and games, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, compatible display resolution, current drivers, and DirectX/game-format restrictions. Check Microsoft’s Auto SR requirements before relying on it; its presence does not establish that it will improve your stream.
Xbox mode is not a desktop-streaming requirement
Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Its described startup behavior for background processes applies to gaming handhelds; it is a controller-focused interface, not an essential setting for desktop streamers. That clip workflow is different from configuring a live stream. OBS provides scenes, multiple sources, output configuration, and streaming controls, so use it when you need a composed, configurable broadcast rather than a quick local capture.
Troubleshoot by the symptom you can observe
