For most eligible gaming PCs, yes—upgrade to Windows 11. The main benefit in 2026 is not a guaranteed FPS increase. It is continued Microsoft support, better alignment with new hardware and drivers, and access to features such as Auto HDR, DirectStorage, and windowed-game optimizations. In individual games, performance may be nearly identical or occasionally favor Windows 10.

Windows 10 reached end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. It still runs installed games, but connected gaming PCs now face a gradually increasing security and compatibility risk.

The quick recommendation

PC or player type Recommendation
New gaming PC Install Windows 11.
Eligible Windows 10 desktop or laptop Upgrade after backing up saves, drivers, and configurations.
Competitive gamer Upgrade for long-term support, but benchmark your specific games and measure frame times before changing competitive settings.
HDR monitor, NVMe SSD, and modern DirectX 12 games Windows 11 offers the more relevant feature set.
PC that fails CPU, TPM, or Secure Boot requirements Do not force an unsupported upgrade solely for gaming. Consider ESU, isolation, or replacement hardware.
Offline retro-gaming PC Windows 10 may remain practical if isolated and carefully maintained.

Does Windows 11 increase gaming FPS?

There is no universal Windows 11 performance advantage. Results depend on the CPU, GPU, game engine, resolution, drivers, BIOS settings, power plan, background software, and whether the game is CPU- or GPU-limited.

In TechSpot’s January 2026 comparison of Windows 10 and Windows 11 25H2, Windows 10 was about 5% faster at 1080p, while Windows 11 was slightly ahead overall at higher resolutions. That is useful evidence of variability—not proof that either operating system is always faster. Read the full methodology at TechSpot’s Windows 10 versus Windows 11 gaming test.

  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
  • WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion

Average FPS is only one part of gaming performance:

  • Average FPS: the overall rendering rate.
  • 1% lows: a useful indication of severe dips and perceived smoothness.
  • Frame times: the consistency of individual frames; a frame-time graph can reveal stutter that averages hide.
  • Input latency: the delay between an action and its on-screen result.
  • Loading times: affected by the drive, CPU decompression, shader compilation, game-engine design, and asset streaming.

A fair comparison uses the same hardware, GPU and chipset drivers, BIOS settings, Windows power configuration, game version, graphics settings, resolution, overlays, and background applications. A clean installation can remove software clutter, but it does not prove that Windows 11 itself produces more FPS.

Gaming features Windows 11 adds or develops

Auto HDR

Auto HDR can expand the brightness and color presentation of supported DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games designed for SDR. It requires an HDR-capable display and correctly configured Windows and monitor HDR settings. Microsoft’s HDR documentation explains the feature.

Auto HDR affects image presentation, not frame rate. Native HDR implemented by the game is generally preferable when it is well designed. Auto HDR can also look washed out or less accurate on a poor HDR display, and some players may prefer the game’s original SDR image. You can disable it through Windows graphics settings or Xbox Game Bar on a per-game basis.

DirectStorage

DirectStorage is intended to streamline asset transfer from storage toward the GPU. The relevant hardware path requires an NVMe SSD, the Standard NVM Express Controller driver, and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. The game must also implement DirectStorage.

Installing Windows 11 on an NVMe drive therefore does not make every game load dramatically faster. Benefits depend on the game’s asset design, decompression workload, CPU, storage, and implementation. Microsoft lists the requirements in its Windows 11 requirements documentation.

Optimizations for windowed games

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games, designed to improve latency and potentially frame rates for supported DirectX 11 and later games running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says the feature applies to more than 2,000 games, but that does not guarantee a measurable improvement in every title.

Competitive players should test exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, and windowed modes separately, along with V-Sync, variable refresh rate, overlays, and alt-tab behavior. Measure rather than relying on reports that a particular mode “feels smoother.”

Future platform support

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s actively developed Windows gaming platform. Newer drivers, handheld-focused experiences, DirectX advances, and Microsoft/Xbox PC gaming features are increasingly designed around current Windows releases. Microsoft’s 2025 PC gaming update describes that direction, but forward-looking platform announcements are not evidence of an immediate FPS gain.

Windows 11 requirements: eligibility is not a gaming recommendation

Microsoft’s listed Windows 11 requirements include:

  • A compatible 64-bit processor.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
  • UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability.
  • TPM 2.0.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics and a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • A display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution.
  • Internet access and a Microsoft account for initial Windows 11 Home setup.

Check the current requirements before upgrading because Microsoft can revise feature-specific requirements. TPM may be present but disabled in firmware, while legacy BIOS/MBR configurations may lack the required UEFI and Secure Boot setup.

These are operating-system eligibility gates, not sensible gaming specifications. A PC can qualify while still having a weak CPU, inadequate RAM, an old GPU, a mechanical hard drive, poor laptop cooling, or obsolete drivers that make modern games perform badly.

How to check and prepare for the upgrade

Check eligibility

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Review whether Windows 11 is offered and whether Microsoft reports a compatibility hold.
  4. If it is not offered, use Microsoft’s official compatibility guidance or PC Health Check rather than assuming that a registry bypass is safe.

Windows Update may not offer Windows 11 because of an unsupported CPU, disabled TPM, disabled Secure Boot, legacy firmware configuration, insufficient storage, pending updates, driver conflicts, or a known compatibility hold. Microsoft describes the supported upgrade path at Can I upgrade to Windows 11?.

Back up before upgrading

  • Back up important files and locally stored game saves.
  • Verify cloud saves for Steam, Epic, Xbox, and other launchers instead of assuming every save is synchronized.
  • Record GPU profiles, controller mappings, mods, reshade files, and capture settings.
  • Save your BitLocker or device-encryption recovery information.
  • Ensure enough free storage for the upgrade and rollback files.
  • Download current motherboard, chipset, GPU, network, audio, and laptop-vendor drivers.
  • Keep recovery media or another computer available in case the system will not boot.

In-place upgrade or clean installation?

An in-place upgrade retains applications and files and is usually the lower-risk first choice for a healthy, eligible PC. It can also carry forward old drivers, utilities, and configuration problems.

A clean installation provides a cleaner software baseline and may remove accumulated conflicts, but it requires reinstalling games and applications, recovering licenses, migrating saves and mods, and reconfiguring drivers. It is not automatically faster for gaming.

What Windows 10 end of support means for gamers

After October 14, 2025, normal Windows 10 installations stopped receiving Microsoft feature updates, ordinary technical support, and regular security updates. The operating system and installed games do not all stop working on that date. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows 10 support notice.

The risk is higher for an online gaming PC because it commonly connects to game stores, launchers, browsers, payment services, chat applications, mods, and anti-cheat software. Game publishers, launcher developers, anti-cheat vendors, and driver makers set their own Windows support policies, so compatibility will decline gradually rather than at one universal deadline.

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

Consumer Extended Security Updates can provide a temporary bridge for eligible Windows 10 systems. Microsoft’s current information describes protection through October 12, 2027, but country, edition, enrollment, and program terms must be checked at publication time. Microsoft previously announced a one-year consumer option at $30, but do not treat that price or enrollment method as universal.

ESU supplies security updates; it does not add Windows 11 gaming features, guarantee third-party game support, or turn Windows 10 into a fully current platform. See Microsoft’s ESU documentation.

Important edge cases

Competitive gaming

For esports titles, compare frame-time consistency and measured input latency with the same driver, display mode, refresh-rate, VRR, V-Sync, overlays, Game Mode, HAGS, and security configuration. Windows 11 is generally the better supported long-term platform, but a specific game may require tuning after the upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Newer Intel hybrid CPUs

Processors with performance and efficiency cores make scheduler behavior, BIOS versions, and chipset support more relevant. That makes a current Windows release a stronger choice, but it does not justify claiming a universal performance gain.

AMD Ryzen systems

Results can vary by Ryzen generation, BIOS, chipset driver, preferred-core behavior, memory configuration, security settings, and game engine. Do not generalize from one Ryzen benchmark.

Laptops

OEM power plans, hybrid graphics switching, battery mode, thermal throttling, vendor utilities, and the built-in display can overwhelm small operating-system differences. Test while plugged in using the same performance profile.

Mods, legacy games, DRM, and anti-cheat

Old controllers, RGB utilities, virtual audio drivers, capture cards, mod loaders, obsolete codecs, copy-protection drivers, DRM, and low-level anti-cheat can behave differently after an upgrade. Update the game, launcher, anti-cheat component, motherboard firmware, and device drivers before blaming Windows 11.

Very old games may depend on 16-bit installers, DirectDraw behavior, deprecated launchers, or unsupported drivers. A separate, isolated legacy system may be more practical than changing a modern gaming PC.

Should you stay on Windows 10?

Staying temporarily is defensible when a critical game or peripheral has a documented Windows 11 problem, the machine is mostly offline, replacement hardware is imminent, or the system is dedicated to legacy gaming. For an online PC, use appropriate security precautions and consider ESU if the device and region qualify.

Do not force Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware as the default solution. A bypass may produce a working installation, but it can bring update uncertainty, driver problems, feature limitations, and more difficult troubleshooting. If TPM or Secure Boot can simply be enabled and the CPU is supported, that is different from bypassing an unsupported processor requirement.

When replacing the PC makes more sense

Replacement is more sensible when the CPU is unsupported, TPM or Secure Boot cannot be enabled, the GPU cannot handle current games, the system still uses a hard drive, the laptop has inadequate cooling, or several major components would need replacement. The benefit comes from the combined hardware improvement—not from Windows 11 alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux or a gaming-focused Linux distribution is another option, but compatibility is title-specific. Anti-cheat, Game Pass PC, launchers, HDR, and mods may require workarounds or may not work at all. Verify every important game before switching.

A practical decision tree

  1. Is the PC officially eligible? If yes and it is regularly online, upgrade to Windows 11.
  2. Are you worried about performance? Benchmark several important games before and after, recording average FPS, 1% lows, frame times, and latency where possible.
  3. Is the PC ineligible but otherwise useful? Check whether TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot only needs enabling. If the CPU remains unsupported, consider ESU as a temporary bridge.
  4. Is the hardware old or unsuitable for current games? Replace the PC rather than forcing an unsupported installation.
  5. Is it a dedicated offline or retro system? Windows 10 can remain practical if isolated and backed up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Windows 11 make my games run faster?

Not necessarily. Current testing shows small, configuration-dependent differences. Some systems or games may favor Windows 10, while others may favor Windows 11.

Do I need an NVMe SSD for Windows 11 gaming?

No, but NVMe storage is required for the relevant DirectStorage hardware path. The game must also implement DirectStorage, so an NVMe drive does not automatically improve every loading time.

Will my Windows 10 games stop working?

Not universally. Windows 10’s Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025, but individual games, launchers, drivers, and anti-cheat systems decide when to end support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I bypass Windows 11 requirements?

Usually no. Unsupported installations may work but have less predictable updates, drivers, features, and troubleshooting. Consider ESU or replacement hardware instead.

The Bottom Line

Upgrade an officially eligible, regularly connected gaming PC to Windows 11 in 2026. Expect platform longevity and newer feature support—not a guaranteed FPS revolution. Keep Windows 10 only for a justified temporary, unsupported-hardware, offline, or legacy-gaming use case.
