Press Windows + Alt + R to start or stop recording. Xbox Game Bar saves the result as an MP4 in VideosCaptures by default. It is designed mainly for an active game or app, not as a guaranteed full-desktop recorder.
Before you record
- A Windows 11 PC with Xbox Game Bar available.
- The game or app you want to capture open and selected.
- Game Bar enabled in Settings.
- Optional: a working microphone and the correct audio device selected.
Microsoft’s labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 releases and accessibility interfaces. The steps below use the current Settings search and Game Bar terminology documented by Microsoft.
Enable Xbox Game Bar
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Search for Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the setting that controls Xbox Game Bar and turn on Enable Xbox Game Bar (the wording may differ slightly).
- Press Windows + G. If the Game Bar overlay appears, it is available for the current account and app.

Record an active game or app
Fast keyboard method
- Open the game or app and click inside its window.
- Press Windows + Alt + R.
- Look for the recording indicator or timer.
- Press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
The same shortcut starts and stops the recording. Windows + G only opens the overlay; it does not begin recording by itself.

Game Bar controls
- With the target app active, press Windows + G.
- Open the Capture widget.
- Select the record button.
- Stop with the control in the recording indicator or press Windows + Alt + R.
Make a short test clip before recording a presentation, support case, or long gameplay session. Microsoft does not establish one universal maximum recording time for every current Windows 11 build, so do not rely on an assumed limit.
Include system audio and microphone narration
Configure game, app, and system sounds
- Press Windows + G.
- Open Settings in Game Bar.
- Choose Capturing.
- Under audio recording, select the scope that includes the sounds you need, such as All (game, apps, and system sounds). The visible label can vary.
System or app audio is sound produced by Windows or the recorded program. The selection can be correct while an individual app is muted or routed to a different output device.

Toggle the microphone while recording
Press Windows + Alt + M to turn the microphone on or off during a recording. Check the microphone indicator after using the shortcut; it is easy to leave narration muted unintentionally.
Microphone audio is your voice or another input device. For a mixed recording, enable the microphone, select the intended input in Windows, and choose an audio scope that includes app or system sound as well.

If the clip has no sound
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and confirm the target app is not muted.
- Confirm Windows is using the intended playback device.
- Check microphone permission, input selection, and any mute switch on the headset or microphone.
- Play the file in a media player that supports its audio track.
- Record a short test clip, especially when using Bluetooth audio or application-specific routing.
Find, view, and share the file
The default video location is:
C:Users<username>VideosCapturesIn File Explorer, open Videos, then Captures. Recordings are MP4 files, and Microsoft says the filename includes the game or app name and the date and time. Windows gaming or capture settings can change the storage location, so treat VideosCaptures as the default rather than a guarantee for every installation.
Take a screenshot instead
For a still image of the active game or app, press Windows + Alt + Print Screen. Microsoft identifies the output as a PNG saved in the same VideosCaptures folder.

What Game Bar can—and cannot—capture well
Game Bar’s supported practical use case is an active game or individual app. Capture behavior can vary by app and Windows configuration, and protected or otherwise unsupported windows may produce a blank result or no recording.
- It is not the best choice for selecting a rectangle of the desktop.
- It may not capture every Windows surface, File Explorer view, secure window, or protected video.
- It does not provide a production workflow with multiple scenes, webcams, advanced audio mixing, or detailed encoder and bitrate controls.
- It is well suited to short gameplay clips, bug reports, quick app demonstrations, and troubleshooting videos.
For a defined desktop region, use Snipping Tool. For complete display capture or a multi-source setup, use OBS Studio.

Troubleshoot a failed recording
The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm Xbox Game Bar is enabled in Settings.
- Press Windows + G to see whether the overlay opens.
- Click inside the target game or app and try again.
- Start from the Capture widget instead of the shortcut.
- Restart the app and Game Bar, then install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates.
- If available on your build, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options and use Repair; use Reset only if repair does not help.
- Test an ordinary app. If only one program fails, the limitation may be app-specific.
- If capture remains unavailable, test Snipping Tool or OBS rather than starting with registry edits.
Capture controls are greyed out
- Game Bar may still be disabled.
- No capturable game or app may be active.
- The window may be protected or unsupported.
- A managed-PC policy may block recording.
- The Game Bar package may be malfunctioning, or another overlay may be interfering.
Try another ordinary app and compare the result with Snipping Tool or OBS. Successful capture elsewhere points to Game Bar or its app-recognition path.
The recording is blank or shows the wrong window
- Click the intended app before starting.
- Do not switch windows during the test.
- Use Snipping Tool for a selected region.
- Use OBS Display Capture for the entire display.
- When diagnosing a conflict, temporarily disable competing overlays or recorders.

Performance drops during capture
- Reduce the game’s graphics load.
- Close unnecessary overlays and background recorders.
- Do not run several capture utilities simultaneously.
- Test a short clip before committing to a long recording.
- If you move to OBS, configure it for the hardware instead of assuming the same settings will suit every PC.

Snipping Tool
Windows 11’s built-in recorder can select and refine part of the screen before recording. Microsoft introduced this capability in 2023 and lists Snipping Tool among the alternatives to Steps Recorder in its support guidance.
Clipchamp
Clipchamp can record the screen and then provide straightforward editing such as trimming and titles. Microsoft describes it as a Windows 11 video-editing option in the same alternate-tools guidance. Current premium pricing is not needed for this recording choice.

OBS is distributed as an official download for Windows 10 and Windows 11 at obsproject.com/download. It is free and open source, but requires more setup.
