Microsoft’s AI-powered Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is no longer merely “coming” to Windows 11. Microsoft introduced it on June 6, 2024, and made it available on selected Copilot+ PCs, initially those using Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors. It can raise performance by rendering a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructing the image with an AI model, but it is not a universal Windows feature: hardware, Windows version, game, graphics API, display mode and software compatibility all matter.
Auto SR is best understood as a Windows-level upscaler for a limited set of games. It is not frame generation, it does not automatically work on every Copilot+ PC, and it is not Microsoft’s replacement for DLSS, FSR or XeSS. A Snapdragon X laptop owner with a compatible DirectX game should try it; a gaming-first buyer should choose the platform and GPU first, then treat Auto SR as a bonus.
At a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is it available? | Yes, in limited form, since Microsoft’s June 6, 2024 launch. |
| Primary supported hardware | Eligible Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors in Microsoft’s documented implementation. |
| Windows baseline | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in the launch-era requirements. |
| Does it work with every game? | No. Support is limited to selected games and rendering paths, principally DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles. |
| Is it the same as DirectSR? | No. Auto SR is a consumer Windows feature; DirectSR is a developer API for integrating vendor upscalers. |
Microsoft’s current Copilot+ material still describes gaming Auto SR specifically for Snapdragon X Series systems. Feature availability can vary by device, region and time, so “Copilot+” alone is not proof that a particular machine supports gaming Auto SR: Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC information.
What Auto SR does
Super resolution reduces the number of pixels a game must render, then reconstructs the result at the display’s output resolution. Auto SR coordinates the NPU, CPU and GPU. Microsoft says its convolutional-neural-network model was trained on gaming content and designed to run on the NPU: Microsoft’s Auto SR technical announcement.

- The game renders internally below the monitor or laptop panel’s target resolution.
- The lower-resolution frame reduces the rendering workload, primarily helping when the GPU is the bottleneck.
- Auto SR’s AI model enhances and reconstructs that image.
- Windows presents the result at the target display resolution.
This is upscaling, not the creation of entirely new interpolated frames. Microsoft’s design discussion described rendering from roughly 700 vertical lines in an example; that is not a universal minimum or a guaranteed quality setting. Microsoft also reported about one frame of average latency in its own testing, not as an independent benchmark.
Hardware and Windows requirements
Microsoft’s documented baseline
- An eligible Copilot+ PC.
- A Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processor for the original supported gaming implementation.
- A capable NPU and integrated GPU.
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or later under the launch-era requirements.
- A compatible display, game and rendering path.
Microsoft markets Copilot+ PCs around NPUs capable of 40+ TOPS, but that number by itself does not guarantee gaming Auto SR. Individual Copilot+ features have their own hardware and software requirements.

Auto SR compared with DLSS, FSR, XeSS and DirectSR
| Technology | Where it runs | How it is integrated | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Auto SR | Windows/NPU-centered feature | Selected existing games, without each developer adding a separate upscaler | Simple system-level access | Narrow hardware and game compatibility |
| Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution | Nvidia GPU software and hardware stack | Usually integrated by the game | High-quality reconstruction on supported Nvidia GPUs | Requires compatible Nvidia hardware and game support |
| AMD FSR | Game or driver implementation, depending on version | Usually integrated by the game | Broad hardware reach | Quality and features vary by implementation |
| Intel XeSS | Intel-optimized path with fallback options | Usually integrated by the game | Useful on supported Intel and cross-vendor systems | Best modes require game integration |
| DirectSR | Developer API | One integration route for multiple vendor technologies | Can reduce development complexity | It is not a consumer upscaler |
Microsoft says Auto SR operates on games as they exist, without requiring developers to provide the temporal jitter, mip bias and other rendering data commonly exposed to integrated upscalers. DirectSR is a separate API intended to simplify access to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, Intel XeSS and Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution: Microsoft’s explanation of Auto SR and DirectSR.

AI reconstruction can soften small text, HUD elements, thin geometry, foliage, particles, motion-heavy details and anti-aliased edges. Microsoft explicitly called out possible text and HUD softness.
Latency and bottlenecks
Microsoft’s approximately one-frame average latency result may be acceptable in a story-driven game but less attractive for competitive shooters or rhythm games. Auto SR primarily removes rendering work; it will not solve a CPU-bound game, shader-compilation stutter, storage bottleneck or emulation overhead.

Display and desktop behavior
Microsoft described early limitations involving additional resolutions and multi-monitor configurations, and Auto SR may temporarily change desktop resolution while a game runs. Windowed, borderless and exclusive-fullscreen behavior can vary by build and title. HDR support was identified as a future direction in the launch material, so do not assume universal HDR support.
Should you buy a Copilot+ PC for Auto SR?
If you already own an eligible Snapdragon X laptop
Try Auto SR in a supported DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game. Compare it with native resolution and any built-in scaler, and disable it if text, latency or compatibility is unacceptable.
If you are buying a general-purpose laptop
Choose for battery life, display, cooling, software compatibility, storage, memory and price. Auto SR is a useful extra, not a purchase justification by itself.

Compare a Snapdragon X system with a discrete-GPU Windows laptop or desktop. Nvidia hardware offers broad game compatibility and native DLSS support; AMD and Intel systems offer their own FSR or XeSS paths. A Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC can be a poor fit for a library that depends on anti-cheat, Vulkan/OpenGL, mods, emulation or high-end ray-traced performance.
Use this order: check your games, confirm Snapdragon X and Windows 11 24H2-or-later eligibility, investigate Arm compatibility, then compare native GPU performance, display quality, cooling, battery life and price. Microsoft Store configurations such as the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC and 15-inch Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC are examples of eligible product categories, but prices and promotions change and should be checked before buying.
The verdict
Windows 11 Auto SR is available, technically interesting and potentially useful when a compatible game is GPU-bound on a Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC. Its narrow hardware and game support, possible image artifacts, one-frame latency in Microsoft’s testing and Windows-on-Arm compatibility questions keep it from being a universal gaming solution. Buy the platform for its overall strengths, then use Auto SR when your specific game and system qualify.
