Short answer: Microsoft is still working through problems in Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), now generally called Xbox mode. Windows Insider Build 26220.7344 improved the controller virtual keyboard, but Microsoft still listed app-compatibility problems as a known issue. The August 2026 public-update coverage does not verify a universal fix, and Xbox mode remains dependent on your Windows build, Xbox app version, device, account, and market.
What Xbox Full Screen Experience is—and why it is now called Xbox mode
FSE is a controller-first Windows 11 interface that puts games at the center of the screen, reduces desktop distractions, and makes it easier to switch between a game library and the regular Windows desktop. Microsoft initially used the name Full Screen Experience; its broader 2026 rollout uses Xbox mode. Older settings pages and troubleshooting posts may use either name.
The interface is designed to bring together Xbox and PC Game Pass games, Xbox Play Anywhere titles, installed PC games from other storefronts, and a simpler controller-driven shell. Microsoft says storefront aggregation and behavior can change while the feature continues rolling out. See Microsoft’s FSE expansion announcement and its later PC gaming coverage.
Official ways to open it
- Settings: Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience.
- Keyboard shortcut: Windows key + F11.
- Task View: press Windows key + Tab and choose the Xbox full-screen option when it is available.
- Game Bar: open Game Bar and check its settings for the FSE/Xbox mode entry.
Microsoft documented these entry points when FSE expanded beyond handhelds to laptops, desktops, and tablets.

What Microsoft actually changed
The clearest FSE-specific change is in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7344, released to the Dev and Beta Channels on December 5, 2025. Microsoft said the virtual keyboard should appear properly when controller users need to type on devices without a touchscreen. That is a targeted improvement—not proof that every FSE problem was fixed.
The same release notes still identified a separate compatibility problem: some apps can behave unexpectedly in FSE, especially apps that require a fixed window size or open additional windows. A launcher, sign-in dialog, installer, overlay, or configuration utility can therefore behave differently from a conventional desktop session. Read the Build 26220.7344 release notes.
That distinction matters. “Known issue” means Microsoft had documented the behavior and was working on it; it does not mean the issue had been eliminated. The virtual-keyboard change and fixed-size-window problem are separate release-note items.

Timeline: preview fixes versus the public rollout
| Date | What happened | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| November 21, 2025 | FSE expanded to Windows 11 laptops, desktops, and tablets for eligible Insiders; Microsoft listed the Xbox app, Task View, Game Bar, and Win + F11 entry points. | The feature was moving beyond handheld-focused testing, but access was still phased. |
| December 5, 2025 | Build 26220.7344 improved virtual-keyboard behavior for controller users on non-touch devices. | One input problem was addressed while app-compatibility problems remained known issues. |
| April 17, 2026 | Later Canary-channel material referred to Xbox mode on Windows 11 PCs. | Microsoft was using the newer name in ongoing preview development. |
| April 30, 2026 | Microsoft announced Xbox mode would begin rolling out to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. | Availability depended on rollout and eligibility, not Windows Update alone. |
| August 18, 2026 | Available coverage of the August Windows 11 update listed several Windows improvements but did not identify a completed Xbox mode/FSE fix. | It is safer to say the update works toward the problem than that it resolves every case. |

There is no universal “install the latest update and everyone gets it” rule. Availability can vary by:
- Windows 11 build and Insider channel;
- Xbox PC app, Xbox Game Bar, and Gaming Services versions;
- Xbox Insider enrollment for preview access;
- device type and OEM configuration;
- geographic market and staged rollout status; and
- Microsoft’s account- or device-level enablement.
The original preview required the Xbox app from the Microsoft Store, and Microsoft warned that eligible Insiders would not necessarily receive the feature immediately. The April 2026 announcement likewise described a select-market rollout. Two PCs on the same Windows build can therefore show different options.

How to check whether your PC has it
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install applicable updates.
- Open the Microsoft Store and update Xbox, Xbox Game Bar, Gaming Services, and Xbox Insider Hub if you use previews.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience.
- Try Windows key + F11.
- Press Windows key + Tab and look for the Xbox full-screen option.
- Open Game Bar and inspect its settings for the Xbox mode/FSE control.
Updating the Store components is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed Microsoft-confirmed cure. If none of these entry points exists, the feature may simply not be enabled for your build, device, account, or market.

Xbox mode is missing
First check eligibility and rollout status rather than changing the registry. Confirm that Windows and the Xbox-related Store apps are current, then restart. If the setting remains absent, your PC may be outside the current rollout, your market may not be supported, or your account may not be enrolled in the required preview. Avoid third-party “FSE enabler” tools as a primary solution: they expose unfinished code, are not official Microsoft fixes, and can complicate later support.

Treat this as a possible staged-rollout, app-version, or preview-build problem—not proof that Windows permanently removed the feature. Users have reported disappearing controls in community posts, including an Xbox Insiders report and an Xbox Support report. These are anecdotal reports, not Microsoft-confirmed diagnoses.

An app resizes incorrectly or opens the wrong window
Exit FSE through the Windows desktop option in Task View, Game Bar settings, or the Windows key. Update the affected app and test it outside Xbox mode. Pay particular attention to fixed-size utilities, third-party launchers, overlays, sign-in dialogs, installers, and any program that opens a second window. If the behavior reproduces only in FSE, report it in Feedback Hub under Gaming and Xbox > Gaming Full Screen Experience, as Microsoft instructed during the preview.
The controller or virtual keyboard does not work
Install the applicable Windows build and update Xbox Game Bar and Gaming Services through the Microsoft Store. The December 2025 Insider build specifically targeted virtual-keyboard appearance for controller users on non-touchscreen devices; that change does not address every controller-navigation or app-compatibility failure.
Xbox mode works on one PC but not another
Compare Windows build numbers, Xbox app and Gaming Services versions, Insider enrollment, device form factor, and region. A phased feature flag can produce different results even when the hardware appears similar.

Should you join Windows Insider to get it sooner?
Use an Insider build only if early access is worth preview-software risk. Back up important data, maintain a recovery plan, and avoid relying on the PC for work that cannot tolerate unrelated Windows bugs. Microsoft’s own notes show that Xbox mode/FSE could still have known app-compatibility issues in preview channels. Stable-channel users who do not need the feature immediately are better served by waiting for a supported rollout.
What Xbox mode does not guarantee
- Installing a Windows update does not necessarily update the Xbox app or Gaming Services.
- Buying a controller or handheld does not make a missing software feature appear.
- Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and other launchers may not behave identically inside a controller-first shell.
- A “known issue” entry is not the same as a completed fix.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft is actively iterating on Xbox Full Screen Experience, now branded Xbox mode. Build 26220.7344 improved virtual-keyboard behavior, but Microsoft still documented unexpected behavior in fixed-size and multi-window apps. The August 2026 update has not been shown to eliminate every FSE problem, and the feature remains a phased, market- and device-dependent rollout. Update Windows and the Xbox Store apps, verify the official entry points, and report reproducible compatibility failures instead of relying on unofficial enablers.
