Yes—Windows 95 reached the desktop on a modified PlayStation 2, but only inside an x86 emulator. The demonstration ran Paint; it did not turn the PS2 into a practical PC, and Doom 95 failed to launch.
How Windows 95 ran on a PS2
The PlayStation 2 uses a MIPS-based Emotion Engine, while Windows 95 expects an x86 processor. The console therefore could not run Windows 95 natively. In the successful attempt, creator Jace, who publishes as MetraByte, used Bochs compiled for PS2 to emulate the x86 environment. Hackaday describes Bochs as the route that worked after experiments with DOSBox failed. Hackaday
Jace documented the project in a video published June 23, 2025. Tom’s Hardware reports that the setup used a modded fat PS2, a controller with a QWERTY keypad, USB storage and a hard drive. It also involved PS2 homebrew code, virtual DOS media, Windows 95 installation media and storage for the installation. Tom’s Hardware MetraByte
What worked—and what did not
- Windows 95 booted to the desktop. That proves the emulator could reach a usable-looking Windows environment in this particular setup, not that every PS2 or Windows 95 image will work.
- Paint ran. The demonstration showed at least one basic Windows application working.
- Mouse input was a major limitation. Reports describe the mouse as unusable or missing, making ordinary desktop interaction awkward.
- Doom 95 did not launch. The demonstration does not show the PS2 playing the Windows version of Doom through this setup.
The reports characterize the experience as slow and awkward, but do not provide controlled frame-rate or responsiveness measurements. There is no sound basis for assigning it a specific speed or treating it as a general-purpose PC.

Why the attempt took so much troubleshooting
Tom’s Hardware reports that Jace tried 47 times to get Windows 95 to the desktop during the DOSBox phase, with recurring problems involving read/write errors, boot order, drive letters, mounting, missing files and drivers. The 47 attempts are the creator’s reported experience, not an independently measured benchmark. After DOSBox did not succeed, the project used Bochs for the desktop demonstration.
Tom’s Hardware also reports Jace’s estimate that the installation took roughly 14 hours. That is a creator-specific estimate for this project, not a predictable setup time for other PS2 owners.

What this demonstration proves
This is a one-off homebrew emulation experiment: a modded PS2 booted Windows 95 under Bochs and ran Paint. It is not a native Windows port, a reliable route to running Windows games, or evidence that the setup is compatible with other PS2 models, emulator builds or installation images. The reports do not establish current authorized availability of Windows 95 media or the required homebrew files, so they are not a basis for downloading installation files from an unofficial source.
