windows.globalization.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a file you should download from a random DLL website. It supports Windows Runtime globalization features such as languages, regions, calendars, currencies, and related internationalization functions documented by Microsoft in the Windows.Globalization namespace.
The safest repair is to restore Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. If only one application fails, repair that application as well.

What windows.globalization.dll does and where it belongs
Windows normally stores architecture-specific copies in these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32windows.globalization.dllon 64-bit WindowsC:WindowsSysWOW64windows.globalization.dllfor 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows
The name may also appear with different capitalization, such as Windows.Globalization.dll. Windows normally treats those forms as the same filename.

These are historical examples, not a complete list of current Windows versions. Do not select a replacement based only on its version or file size. Windows servicing must provide the copy matching your installed Windows build and architecture.
A program reporting this DLL does not necessarily ship the file itself. It may be calling a Windows component that is missing, damaged, inaccessible, or incompatible.
Error messages you may see
Windows may display messages such as:
The program can't start because windows.globalization.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
Other variations include:
The code execution cannot proceed because windows.globalization.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting windows.globalization.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
windows.globalization.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file was deleted. It can also indicate a damaged Windows component, an unavailable dependency, a bad update, or an application installation problem.
First determine whether Windows or one application is affected
Before changing anything, check the scope of the failure.
If only one program or game fails
If Windows Explorer, Settings, the desktop, and other applications work normally, the failing program may be damaged or incompatible.
Do this first:
- Close the program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.
- For a game, open its launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
- If the error remains, uninstall the program.
- Download its installer only from the developer’s official website or the Microsoft Store.
- Reinstall it, then restart Windows.
Reinstalling the application is the appropriate first fix when the failure is limited to that application. It does not justify downloading an isolated windows.globalization.dll.
If Windows components also fail
If Explorer, Settings, built-in applications, the desktop, or several unrelated programs fail, treat this as Windows component corruption. Continue with the system repair steps below.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows’ component store inconsistent.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not specifically require it.
- Test the application again.
If Windows Update reports an error, continue with DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly attempting the same update.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until it finishes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program or Windows feature that produced the error.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupt files, or could not repair some files. A successful repair normally means the affected application starts and Windows components behave normally after the restart.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again after installing pending updates, then run SFC a second time.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when repeatedly hunting through repair results and Windows errors. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repairs require the full version, so DISM and SFC remain the built-in repair path.
If DISM says the source files could not be found
First make sure Windows Update is working, restart, and try the command again. If it still fails, use matching Windows installation media as the repair source.
The media should match your installed Windows edition, language, and build as closely as possible. A random ISO or a different edition can make servicing worse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft documents /Source and /LimitAccess for this situation. The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX /LimitAccess
Replace X: and INDEX with values that match your installation media. If your media contains install.esd rather than install.wim, the source syntax differs. Use Microsoft’s DISM image-repair documentation rather than guessing an index.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Defender or another security product may have quarantined a file. Do not restore a quarantined item merely because an application reports a missing DLL.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection involving a Windows system file.
- Confirm the file path, detection name, and date.
- Restore it only when you are confident the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring quarantined files is appropriate only when you trust the item. The safer preference for a missing Windows DLL is DISM and SFC, which obtain a Windows-managed copy instead of reviving an unverified file.
If malware may have caused the problem, update Defender and run a full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when malicious software may be interfering with Windows while it is running. Microsoft provides additional malware detection and removal guidance.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If system repair completes successfully but one program still reports the DLL, focus on that program.
- Check the application’s built-in updater.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- If the program is a game, use the launcher’s file-verification feature.
- If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Restart Windows before testing the newly installed copy.
Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will replace windows.globalization.dll. This is a Windows component, not normally a file supplied by those redistributable packages. Repair those runtimes only when the error names a runtime file or the application’s official requirements specifically identify one.
Fix 5: Check the file’s authenticity
A file’s presence in System32 or SysWOW64 does not, by itself, prove that it is genuine.

If the file exists:
- Right-click it in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft Corporation.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
If the file is unsigned, has an invalid signature, or is in an unusual application folder, do not replace it with another downloaded copy. Run a malware scan and repair Windows through DISM and SFC.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use a different system path from a 64-bit application. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, to make an error disappear. Windows servicing supplies the architecture-specific files.
Fix 6: Consider drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver
A driver is not the normal source of a missing windows.globalization.dll, so do not begin by reinstalling every driver. Consider this route only if the problem started with a device failure, a graphics application, a recent driver change, or repeated hardware-related crashes.
To update a specific driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a known recent driver problem, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make it easier to identify stale drivers instead of checking many device entries manually. Its free scan identifies reported driver issues, while installing drivers requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery or a repair reinstall
If DISM and SFC cannot restore Windows, use a supported repair reinstall.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings. The option is not available on every Windows edition, build, or managed computer.
If it is missing, use Windows installation media and choose the option to Keep personal files and apps. Read each Setup screen carefully before continuing. Microsoft explains this process in its guide to reinstalling Windows with installation media.
If the problem began recently and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may undo a bad update, cleanup operation, or driver change without removing personal files.
If Windows cannot reach the desktop
Use Windows Recovery Environment instead of copying a DLL manually.
You can reach it by:
- holding Shift while selecting Restart;
- interrupting startup several times until recovery appears;
- starting from Windows installation media.
From Recovery Environment, try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore or Command Prompt. Safe Mode with Command Prompt can also provide a usable repair environment.
Back up important files before a reset or clean installation. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain when to use System Restore, reset, installation-media repair, or a reinstall.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Downloaded DLLs can have the wrong architecture, wrong Windows build, missing dependencies, an invalid signature, or malicious modifications. They may also hide the underlying component-store, disk, update, or malware problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official installation media, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no Microsoft repair procedure requiring registration of windows.globalization.dll.
Do not use this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 windows.globalization.dll
It may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, and it does not restore a damaged Windows component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not mix versions or architectures
Historical version lists are not compatibility guides. Mixing an old DLL with a newer Windows installation can cause “not designed to run on Windows,” missing-export, or dependency errors.
FAQ
Is windows.globalization.dll a real Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Runtime globalization features.
Why does an application report it if Windows still starts?
Windows can boot while one protected component, dependency, or application call is damaged. A working desktop does not prove that every Windows system file is intact.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not for this filename. Those packages are not the primary source of windows.globalization.dll. Repair the application and Windows first.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, edition, language, or architecture. Use Windows servicing or a matching trusted system image.
What if only one game or application fails?
Repair or reinstall that application from its official source, and use its launcher’s file-verification feature. If other Windows components work, an application-specific repair is more appropriate than replacing a system DLL.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, affected application, Windows edition and build, whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64, the DISM and SFC results, digital-signature status, and any recent update, antivirus, cleanup, or malware event.
