windows.graphics.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a file you should download separately. If windows.graphics.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first, then repair the individual application if only one program is affected.
What windows.graphics.dll does
The file belongs to the Windows Runtime graphics API surface. It supports graphics, display, imaging, and related Windows Runtime functionality. Microsoft documents these interfaces in the Windows.Graphics namespace and the Windows Runtime API reference.
It is part of Windows itself. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX installer, .NET package, or normal graphics-driver file. There is no separate Microsoft windows.graphics.dll redistributable.
Where the file should be
| Windows configuration | Expected location |
|---|---|
| 64-bit Windows native system file | %WINDIR%System32Windows.Graphics.dll |
| 32-bit Windows | %WINDIR%System32Windows.Graphics.dll |
| 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows | %WINDIR%SysWOW64Windows.Graphics.dll |
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains shared 32-bit files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the Windows file system redirector.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because Windows.Graphics.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because Windows.Graphics.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting Windows.Graphics.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Windows.Graphics.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error loading Windows.Graphics.dll.”
The wording varies by Windows version and by the application making the request.
A missing file is only one possibility. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows.Graphics.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture. A damaged application installation, a failed update, security-software quarantine, or an incompatible program can produce the same symptom.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because a pending or incomplete update can leave system components mismatched.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the supported update process.
If Windows 11 shows Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, this can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, subject to the requirements shown on that PC. Use this when Windows Update itself appears damaged or repeated updates do not resolve the component error.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store and image. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from Windows servicing sources. Run DISM first.

- Open Start.
- Type

- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program that reported the error.
A successful SFC result means Windows found no integrity violations, or repaired the damaged files. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. Microsoft documents this sequence in Using System File Checker in Windows, and explains the role of the Windows component store.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the problem remains, inspect the CBS log or move to an in-place Windows repair rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing reported problems; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when the Microsoft repair sequence resolves the issue.
Fix 3: Check whether only one application fails
If Windows itself works normally and only one game or application reports windows.graphics.dll, the application installation may be damaged. The DLL is still a Windows component, but the program may be failing to load it correctly or may contain another missing dependency.
Try the application’s built-in repair function first:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close the program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test it.
If no repair option exists:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application only from its developer or official publisher.
- Install the current version.
- Start it once after installation completes.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, depending on the launcher. This restores damaged application files without replacing Windows system components.
If the application directory contains its own Windows.Graphics.dll, do not automatically copy over it with a downloaded file. A file placed beside an executable can override the normal Windows search path. Remove or replace application-folder files only when the publisher’s repair or reinstall process identifies them as damaged.
Fix 4: Check architecture and the exact file path
A 32-bit program uses the 32-bit system view. A 64-bit program uses the native 64-bit view. Copying a DLL of the opposite architecture can cause “bad image,” load, or entry-point errors.

To inspect the Windows copies:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32. - Press Enter.
- Look for
Windows.Graphics.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also inspect
%WINDIR%SysWOW64.
Do not judge the architecture from the folder name alone. System32 is normally the native 64-bit location on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 holds 32-bit system files. If the file is present but the application still fails, the error may concern a dependency or the application’s architecture rather than the named DLL.
A program that worked previously can also become incompatible after an update. Check the publisher’s supported Windows versions and application updates before trying compatibility settings.
Fix 5: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software can quarantine a damaged or altered system file, although a quarantine entry does not prove the file was safe.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
Windows.Graphics.dll. - Open an entry to see its original path, detection name, and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original path is a normal Windows system directory and its Microsoft signature and provenance are trustworthy. If the file came from an application folder or an unknown source, do not restore it merely because the application requests it.
Instead, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If malware may still be active, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the same area. Microsoft explains these decisions in its guidance for Protection history and Microsoft Defender Offline.

Fix 6: Update the graphics driver only for graphics symptoms
A graphics-driver issue can cause a crash involving Windows graphics components, but reinstalling a driver normally does not restore Windows.Graphics.dll.
Use Device Manager when the symptoms include display-driver resets, black screens, graphical corruption, or graphics-related crashes:

Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded copy can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack the correct signature, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also replace a properly serviced system file with an incompatible one.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or official Windows installation media instead.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows servicing tracks system files and their component metadata. Copying a file manually can create a version mismatch and does not repair the component store.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL, and there is no evidence that registering Windows.Graphics.dll is an appropriate fix.

It is a protected Windows component that may be used by Windows Runtime applications, Explorer, display-related components, or other processes. Deleting it can create additional failures.

FAQ
Is windows.graphics.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system component. A copy in an unexpected folder, an unsigned copy, or a file flagged by Defender should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Should I register windows.graphics.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not an appropriate general fix for this Windows Runtime system DLL.
Is this a DirectX or Visual C++ problem?
Not by itself. Windows.Graphics.dll belongs to Windows Runtime graphics functionality. Install another runtime only when the complete error identifies that separate dependency.
Why does Windows say the specified module was not found when the file exists?
The named file may depend on another missing or incompatible module. The application may also be loading a wrong-architecture copy from its own folder.
What if SFC says it repaired files but the error remains?
Restart first, then test the application again. If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program. If several programs fail, run DISM before SFC again and consider an in-place Windows repair.
