The winspool.dll error usually points to a filename problem, not a missing modern Windows download. winspool.dll is a real error message, but Microsoft’s documented Windows printing module is winspool.drv.
Do not download winspool.dll from a random DLL website or rename winspool.drv. First identify the exact filename, then follow the repair path that matches the program, printer, or Windows component reporting the failure.

First check: is it winspool.dll or winspool.drv
Read the complete error carefully. These messages require different conclusions:
| Message or symptom | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
WINSPOOL.dll was not found |
An old application may be requesting the wrong filename or has lost an application-local file |
WINSPOOL.DRV was not found |
Windows system-file damage, an update problem, or an application that cannot access the Windows printing module |
Winspool.DRV is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error |
Corruption, incompatible files, or a damaged Windows installation |
An application reports C:WindowsSystem32winspool.drv is not a valid Windows image |
A damaged or mismatched Windows system file |
| Printing fails while other programs start normally | Print Spooler or printer-driver trouble is more likely than a missing DLL |
Microsoft documents Winspool.drv as the runtime module for the Windows printing API. Winspool.lib is the import library used during development, while Spoolsv.exe provides the Print Spooler service. See Microsoft’s OpenPrinter documentation and spooler components documentation.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
A file listing may describe winspool.dll as “Windows Spooler Driver,” part of Microsoft Windows and published by Microsoft Corporation. That description does not prove that current Windows normally ships a file with that exact .dll name. On current Windows installations, check for winspool.drv first.
Check whether the Windows file exists
You can check the expected 64-bit Windows path without downloading anything.
- Press
Windows key + Eto open File Explorer. - Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
winspool.drv.
On 64-bit Windows, native 64-bit system files are generally in %windir%System32. The name can be confusing because System32 also contains system components used by 32-bit programs through Windows file-system redirection.
For a 32-bit system-file view on 64-bit Windows, enter this path:

Do not copy files between these folders. Microsoft explains the behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
If winspool.drv exists, do not replace it manually. The application may be asking for winspool.dll, or a printer driver may be failing for another reason. Continue with the repair steps below.
Fix 1: install Windows updates and restart
A failed update or incomplete servicing operation can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program or printer again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the current update process.

It helps distinguish Windows component damage from an old application that has always expected winspool.dll.
Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this path when:
winspool.drvis missing or appears damaged- several unrelated programs fail to start
- the problem began after malware removal, disk cleanup, a failed update, or a failed repair
- Windows displays a bad-image or invalid-image error
- printing and other Windows functions are also unreliable
Run DISM first, then System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until it finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft provides these commands in its System File Checker repair guide.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it found corruption but could not repair some files, restart the computer and run the same SFC command again. If the result is unchanged, continue to System Restore or the Windows repair options described later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows problems and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in repair commands remain the primary path.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Windows may need a repair source when Windows Update itself is damaged. Do not download an isolated winspool.dll file as a substitute. Microsoft documents DISM repair-source options in its SFC and Windows image repair guidance.
Use a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. If you are not certain which installation media is appropriate, stop before running an image-repair command with an arbitrary source.
Fix 3: repair the affected old application
If only one old program fails and other applications, Windows, and printing work normally, the application is the leading suspect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome legacy applications may incorrectly request winspool.dll instead of the documented winspool.drv. An old Broderbund application, for instance, has been associated with a “WINSPOOL.dll was not found” message. That historical error proves the message occurred; it does not establish that current Windows should contain that filename.
Try the application’s own repair function first:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every desktop program provides an Advanced options or Repair button. Microsoft describes the available repair and reinstall paths in its application repair guidance.
If Repair is unavailable:
- Find the original installer or trusted vendor media.
- Back up the program’s documents and settings.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original vendor source.
- Apply any vendor patch intended for your Windows version.
- Test the program before restoring optional plugins or add-ons.
If the application is very old, check its vendor documentation for a supported compatibility mode or newer release. Compatibility mode may help an application run, but it does not make an unsupported winspool.dll reference a current Windows system component.
Fix 4: verify a game’s files
If the error belongs to a game, the missing file may be in the game’s installation folder rather than in Windows. A launcher’s verification function is safer than downloading a DLL.
Use the launcher’s installed-file verification command. In general:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its menu or properties.
- Choose Verify, Verify files, or Verify integrity.
- Wait for the scan to complete.
- Allow the launcher to replace damaged or missing files.
- Start the game again.
Epic describes this process in its game-file verification instructions. Steam provides additional launch troubleshooting through its official support page.
If verification does not repair the game, reinstall it through the same official launcher. If the game is old, its installer may contain a filename reference that is incompatible with modern Windows. The game vendor’s update or a supported older environment is the appropriate fix.
Fix 5: restart the Print Spooler
Use this path when applications start normally but printing fails, print jobs remain stuck, or a printer-related application crashes when it tries to print.

A running Print Spooler does not prove that every printer driver is healthy. A damaged or incompatible driver can crash software that calls the Winspool API even when winspool.drv itself is intact.
Fix 6: remove and reinstall the printer driver
Use the printer manufacturer’s current driver for your exact Windows version and printer model. Avoid copying a driver file from another computer.
First remove the device:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Then check for old driver packages:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
- Right-click the relevant printer entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package if Windows presents it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver obtained from the printer manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of identifying which of several device drivers is stale or mismatched. Its free scan shows the drivers it identifies, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and the printer manufacturer remains the preferred source for a model-specific driver.
After reinstalling the driver, restart the Print Spooler and test a Windows test page. If only one application still fails, the printer driver may not be the remaining problem; return to that application’s Repair or reinstall process.

Antivirus software may quarantine an application-local file, a printer component, or a file that only resembles a system component.
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries that match the time the error began.
- Expand an entry to see its path, detection name, and action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is winspool.dll. Restore a quarantined item only when its original source is known and the file has been confirmed safe. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer. See Protection History in Windows Security.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If a file appears in an unexpected application folder, lacks a Microsoft signature, or returns after removal, run a full Windows Security scan before attempting to restore or execute it.
Fix 8: use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem started after a driver installation, Windows update, application installation, or other system change.
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
You can also open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore instructions.
Fix 9: repair Windows without deleting your files
If DISM, SFC, updates, driver repair, and application reinstall do not resolve a genuine winspool.drv failure, use Windows’ repair options rather than copying system files manually.
On Windows 11, check for the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts and restart when requested.
Microsoft says this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. See reinstalling the current Windows version.
If that option is unavailable, an in-place installation using official Windows installation media may preserve personal files, settings, and applications when Keep personal files and apps is selected. Read Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions before starting.
Recommended Free Tools
Back up important files first. Do not begin an in-place repair if the installer does not offer the correct option to keep your applications and files.
What not to do
Do not download winspool.dll from a DLL website
An untrusted replacement may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to correct the application’s bad import reference. It may also create a second problem when placed in a protected Windows folder.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the affected program’s installer, the game launcher’s verification function, or the printer manufacturer’s driver package instead.
Do not rename winspool.drv
Renaming winspool.drv to winspool.dll does not convert one module into another. The application may expect different exports, dependencies, architecture, or calling behavior. This is not a supported Microsoft repair.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not copy files into System32 or `SysWOW64
A file from another computer or Windows release can have incompatible exports, dependencies, servicing metadata, or architecture. Manual copying can also interfere with Windows protection and future updates.
Do not use regsvr32 for winspool.drv
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. winspool.drv is a Windows printing API module, not a COM component that should be registered manually. Microsoft documents regsvr32 and DLL registration requirements.
Running regsvr32 winspool.drv is therefore not an appropriate repair.
Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes automatically
There is no verified Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET package named winspool.dll. Reinstall those runtimes only when the error separately identifies a missing component from that runtime.
Windows Features: when they matter
Windows printing features are not a replacement for winspool.drv, and enabling random features will not repair a bad filename reference.
To inspect optional printing features:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review entries related to printing or document services.
- Do not enable or disable features unless the application or printer documentation specifically requires them.
- Select Cancel if you opened the list only to inspect it.
A normal Windows component failure should be repaired with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. A program-specific failure should be repaired with that program’s installer or launcher.
Questions to answer before escalating
Record these details if the problem remains:
- Does the message say
winspool.dllorwinspool.drv? - Which application or game displays it?
- Does Windows itself start normally?
- Does printing fail, or do unrelated programs also fail?
- Does
%windir%System32winspool.drvexist? - Is the affected program 32-bit on 64-bit Windows?
- Is the file located beside the application instead of in a Windows folder?
- Did the problem begin after an update, printer-driver installation, antivirus action, disk cleanup, malware removal, or failed repair?
- Does Windows Security show a quarantine event?
- Did DISM and SFC complete, and what result did they report?
- Did repairing or reinstalling the affected application change the message?
The key distinction is simple: current Windows normally provides winspool.drv, not a downloadable winspool.dll. Repair Windows components with Microsoft’s tools, repair the affected application when it is old or isolated, and repair the printer driver only when printing evidence points to that cause.
