In Wittle Defender, “summon” can mean adding a hero during a battle or using tickets to recruit heroes for your roster. Those systems serve different purposes. In battles, build enough board coverage before investing heavily in a core hero’s skills; between battles, concentrate early star-up resources on a main damage dealer and consider saving tickets for a rate-up banner that fits your roster. The specific thresholds and progression advice below come from unofficial guides, so check the live game for changes.
What does “summon” mean in Wittle Defender?
There are two separate systems:
- In-battle hero choices: Leveling can offer a chance to summon a hero from your preselected roster onto the board. Other possible choices described by a fan guide include upgrading an existing hero’s skill or taking a chain skill. These are random upgrade choices, not roster recruitment. Pocket Gamer’s Wittle Defender guide discusses battle choices.
- Roster summons: Outside battle, tickets and summon banners are used to acquire heroes for your account. These summons do not add a hero directly to the current board.
A fan guide suggests getting at least three heroes onto the board before focusing on core skills. Treat that as a beginner heuristic: the better choice depends on your current board, team synergy, and whether a key skill is close to an evolution.
When should I summon a hero or upgrade a skill during battle?
Choose based on what your board needs now, rather than treating one option as always best.
| Battle situation | Choice to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your board has few heroes or lacks coverage | Summon a hero | More units can improve coverage and help establish a team before you commit to skill upgrades. |
| Your core hero is already in play and a useful skill upgrade is available | Upgrade that hero’s skill | Strengthening a key unit may be more valuable than adding another hero when the board is already functioning. |
| A chain skill fits your team or the other choices are poor | Consider the chain skill | It is another kind of battle choice described by the fan guide; its value depends on the options offered and your team. |
These are decision factors inferred from guide descriptions, not guaranteed optimal rules for every stage or build.
How do roster summons and Xenoscape Summon work?
Published guides report several summon thresholds, but the available sources do not establish official, current odds or complete pity rules. Check the banner details in-game before spending tickets.
- First summon: Pocket Gamer reports that the first summon guarantees Demon Spawn.
- Unlocking Xenoscape: Pocket Gamer reports that 500 total summons unlock Xenoscape Summon. A June 2026 WAI beginner guide describes the threshold as 500 Hero Summon Tickets, combining Normal and Rate-Up summons.
- Xenoscape tickets: The June 2026 WAI guide says every 40 normal-gacha summons provides one Xenoscape ticket.
- Rate-up rounds: The same WAI guide says 200 summons completes a Rate-Up round.
These are guide-reported figures, not a guarantee that the current banner rules are unchanged. The Google Play listing identifies the game as a tower-defense, roguelike, and card-strategy game, but does not provide a full official reference for summon odds or pity.
Should I spend tickets now or save them?
The June 2026 WAI guide recommends saving tickets for a rate-up banner that matches your needs. Decide based on the featured hero, how many tickets you have, and whether you are willing to wait. The sources do not establish current summon odds or an optimal expected-value strategy, so do not treat a reported round size as a prediction of what you will receive.
When are skill rerolls worth using?
Pocket Gamer’s guide, dated June 24, 2025, says skill rerolls come from Talents and recommends using them when the offered battle skills are useless. In practice, save a reroll for a choice that does little for your team or current board; if one option supports a core hero or useful team synergy, taking it may be better than rerolling.

What should I upgrade first?
A June 2026 WAI beginner guide recommends prioritizing hero levels and stars over gear during early progression. It also advises focusing star-up resources on a primary damage dealer rather than spreading them evenly across the roster. This is guide advice, not a requirement; your team and current progression may change what is useful.

Early progression
- Put star-up resources toward the main damage dealer you rely on most.
- Level heroes that contribute to your active team instead of assuming every roster unit needs equal investment.
- Consider saving summon tickets for a rate-up target that fills a real need in your roster.
When to start upgrading gear
The WAI guide suggests gear becomes relevant around Chapter 80+, after clearing Legendary III on the Growth Path. Treat this as a progression recommendation from a June 2026 unofficial guide, not a hard unlock rule or universal breakpoint; progression systems can change with updates.
