Start with this quick diagnosis
Before replacing anything, answer these questions:
- Does the error appear when Microsoft Works Word Processor or
Wkswp.exestarts? - Does it say the file is missing, or does Works crash while copying, saving, or opening a document?
- Did the problem begin after reinstalling Works, antivirus activity, disk cleanup, a Windows upgrade, or a damaged document?
- Is Windows 10 or Windows 11 running on a 32-bit or 64-bit system? Check Settings → System → About → System type.

wkwpqd.dll is the Microsoft Works Word Processor module associated with Microsoft Works 7.0. It is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component, so the safest repair is to restore the Works installation rather than download the file into a Windows system folder.
What the wkwpqd.dll error means
Microsoft Works uses wkwpqd.dll for Word Processor functions. A genuine missing-file message may look like one of these:
- “The program can’t start because wkwpqd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading wkwpqd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wkwpqd.dll was not found.”
Older Works installations may instead display:
Wkswp has caused an error in WKWPQD.DLL. Wkswp will close.WKSWP caused an invalid page fault in module WKWPQD.DLLWkswp.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
A crash naming wkwpqd.dll does not prove that the file is missing. Archived Microsoft support cases document Works 6.0 and 7.0 crashes involving clipboard data, insufficient disk space, available memory, text boxes, and document formats.
That distinction determines the fix:
- Missing-file message: repair or reinstall Microsoft Works.
- Crash while copying or saving: test Works with a blank document and address document, storage, or compatibility problems.
- “Module could not be found” message: a dependency of
wkwpqd.dllmay also be missing.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Microsoft Works
This is the most reliable fix when wkwpqd.dll was deleted, quarantined, or damaged.

Microsoft Works is legacy software, and Microsoft does not currently provide a standalone official download for wkwpqd.dll or a current Works 7.0 redistributable. Use the original licensed CD, OEM recovery media, backed-up installer, or another trusted copy of your licensed installation media.
If Works is listed in Windows
- Close Works and any document using it.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft Works.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Choose Repair if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Works and test Word Processor with a blank document.
If the repair option is unavailable, uninstall Works only after backing up your Works documents. Restart the computer, then reinstall from the original media.
If you are using a CD or recovery installer
- Insert the Works installation CD or mount the backed-up installer.
- Open File Explorer and select the installer drive.
- Run
Setup.exe. - If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is not offered, choose the reinstall option.
- Keep the default installation folder unless the installer requires another location.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
- Launch the Works Word Processor and create a new blank document.
A successful repair should restore wkwpqd.dll beside the Works program files and allow Word Processor to open without the missing-file message. Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless you have verified that both computers use the same Works release and installation media. Even then, reinstalling is safer because Works may require additional files and registry settings.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove an old application file after an update or detection. Check quarantine before manually restoring anything.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving Microsoft Works or
wkwpqd.dll. - Expand the relevant entry and inspect its file path and detection details.
Restore the file only if all of these are true:
- The path belongs to your genuine Works installation.
- You installed Works from licensed, trusted media.
- You have independently confirmed that the file is legitimate.
- Windows Security identifies the action as a mistaken quarantine rather than an active threat.
Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can put the device at risk. If the path is unexpected, the detection is unresolved, or the file came from an unofficial download, leave it quarantined and reinstall Works from trusted media instead.
After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test Works. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, do not disable antivirus to force the program to run. Treat the installation as suspect and reinstall it.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate an arbitrary Microsoft Works application DLL, but they are appropriate when Windows itself is damaged or the error began after broader system corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Works again.
If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files, test Works before taking further action.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the same sequence once more. If the wkwpqd.dll error remains, repair or reinstall Works. SFC is not a substitute for the Works installer.
If repeatedly tracking Windows component corruption and interpreting DISM/SFC results is taking longer than the Works repair itself, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Microsoft Works remains the definitive fix for a damaged Works DLL.
Fix 4: Determine whether Works is crashing instead
If the file exists but Works crashes while copying, saving, or opening a document, replacing the DLL is unlikely to help.
Test with a blank document
- Start Microsoft Works.
- Open Word Processor.
- Create a new blank document.
- Type a short sentence.
- Save it to a local folder such as Documents.
- Copy a small amount of text and paste it into the document.
If the blank document works but an older document fails, the document may contain damaged content, a problematic text box, or formatting that Works cannot process correctly.
If copying causes the crash
Archived Microsoft support guidance for Works 6.0 and 7.0 describes a WKWPQD.DLL crash when copied data exceeded available disk space or memory.
Try these steps:
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Open Settings → System → Storage.
- Remove temporary files that you do not need.
- Close other applications before copying large content.
- Reduce the amount of clipboard content.
- Copy smaller sections instead of an entire document.
- Save the result as a new Works document.
Do not assume that adding RAM or installing a runtime package will repair the DLL. First establish whether storage, memory pressure, or unusually large clipboard data triggers the crash.
If saving a text-box document causes the crash
- Open the affected document if possible.
- Remove or simplify text boxes.
- Save a copy under a different filename.
- Use Save As and select another Works file format if available.
- Reopen the new copy.
- Add content back in small sections to identify the damaged element.
Keep the original document untouched until you have confirmed that the new copy opens and saves correctly.
Fix 5: Address compatibility with Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft Works is legacy software. Microsoft does not certify Works 7.0 for current Windows releases, so a previously working installation may fail after a Windows upgrade or hardware change.

- On Windows 10, select Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters.
- Start Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Microsoft Works if it appears, or choose Not listed and browse to the Works executable.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test the recommended compatibility settings.
- Save the settings if Works opens and operates correctly.
You can also try compatibility settings manually:
- Locate the Works executable, often
Wkswp.exe. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version offered by the troubleshooter.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start Works and test a blank document.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing wkwpqd.dll. It helps only when the file is present but the legacy application does not behave correctly under current Windows.

If Works remains unstable, preserve your documents and consider running the original installation inside a supported older Windows virtual machine. Keep that environment isolated, patched where possible, and limited to the documents and software it needs.
Fix 6: Check storage and filesystem health
A failing drive or damaged filesystem can remove or corrupt application files. Back up Works documents before testing the disk.
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click the drive containing Works and select Properties.
- Open the Tools tab.
- Under Error checking, select Check.
- Follow Windows’ instructions.
If Windows reports repeated errors, unusual read failures, or other drive problems, copy your documents to a healthy disk before attempting repeated repairs. Reinstall Works only after the storage problem has been addressed.
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not recreate a third-party Works DLL stored in the Works installation directory.
Fix 7: Update related drivers only when the symptom points there
A display, storage, or printer driver can contribute to application instability, but there is no established evidence that a generic driver update supplies or repairs wkwpqd.dll.
Consider driver work only if the Works failure began after a hardware change, occurs during printing or display operations, or affects other applications too.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Disk drives, or Printers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider and date.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test Works.
Do not remove an unknown driver merely because its date looks old. Keep a restore point or backup before changing hardware drivers.
If checking each device manually means hunting through many driver versions and guessing which one matters, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace a missing Works application DLL.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not start with:
regsvr32 wkwpqd.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command. A Works Word Processor module may not be self-registering, so the command can produce an entry-point error without fixing the original problem.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its registration purpose. For this file, repair or reinstall Microsoft Works instead.
Do not place wkwpqd.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application directory
A 32-bit Works program may need its files beside the Works executable, even on 64-bit Windows. The correct location depends on the Works release and installer. Public file indexes commonly describe this module as Win32, but Microsoft does not currently publish an authoritative manifest, hash, or standalone package. Do not treat an online version, size, or architecture listing as proof that a file is interchangeable.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
There is no established evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET supplies wkwpqd.dll. Installing those packages should not be the default response.
Likewise, Windows Features cannot add Microsoft Works, and Device Manager cannot restore a Works application DLL. Use Windows Features only when a separate Windows component is specifically named in the error.
Last-resort recovery options
If the failure began after an update, software removal, or security action, System Restore may return the system to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the Works failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but back up important Works files first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf repair still fails:
- Preserve all Works documents.
- Uninstall Microsoft Works.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it in a clean location from trusted original media.
- Run the compatibility troubleshooter.
- Test with a blank document before opening older files.
If the original media is unavailable or Works cannot run reliably, migrate the documents to a modern word processor that can import the relevant Works format. Keep the original files as backups.

Is wkwpqd.dll used by Microsoft Works 7.0?
Yes. It is the Word Processor module associated with Microsoft Works 7.0. Related Works releases may contain different builds.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public indexes commonly identify it as a Win32 module, but Microsoft does not currently publish a definitive manifest for this file. Verify the actual file from trusted Works media rather than relying on an online listing.
Should I download wkwpqd.dll from a DLL website?
No. Random DLL archives can provide malware, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the rest of your Works installation. They often fail to fix the underlying application or document problem.
Why does Works name wkwpqd.dll when the file is present?
The DLL may be the faulting module in a Works crash. Clipboard limits, insufficient storage, text boxes, damaged documents, and compatibility problems can all produce errors naming the module.
Will SFC restore wkwpqd.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not arbitrary application files installed by Microsoft Works.
Can I fix it by registering the DLL?
Usually no. regsvr32 is not a universal repair command, and there is no reason to assume this Works module exposes the required registration entry point.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the safest fix?
