The 60-second answer
wmaudsdk.dll is the Windows Media Audio SDK DLL, a legacy Microsoft Windows Media Services-era component. It is usually requested by an old audio program, CD ripper, game, or multimedia application rather than by modern Windows itself.
The safest repair is to identify the program producing the error, then repair or reinstall that program from its original installer, CD, DVD, ISO, or trusted vendor archive. If the application includes WMAudioRedist.exe or a similar Windows Media installer, run that package as part of the repair.
Do not download a lone copy of wmaudsdk.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. The file may be the wrong build or architecture, may be modified, or may require companion files that are also missing.

What is wmaudsdk.dll?
The name refers to the Windows Media Audio SDK DLL. Microsoft documentation places Windows Media Services SDK within the Windows Media 9 Series SDK, while the Windows Media Format SDK and related DirectShow technologies are now documented as legacy technologies:
- Windows Media Services 9 SDK
- Windows Media Format SDK software redistribution
- Microsoft guidance on Windows Media Format SDK technologies
A commonly indexed file record describes wmaudsdk.dll as a 32-bit PE DLL with version 4.0.0.3845 and a size of approximately 0.16 MB. Those particular metadata values come from third-party file metadata and are not independently confirmed by a current Microsoft download page.
This distinction matters. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can play many WMA files through Media Foundation, but modern WMA support is not automatically a drop-in replacement for an old application compiled against the Windows Media SDK. An application can still require the exact legacy API represented by wmaudsdk.dll.
Which program is asking for it?
The error normally appears when a specific executable tries to load the DLL. The program might be:
- An old CD ripper or audio converter
- A legacy music library or media editor
- An older PC game that plays Windows Media audio
- A program copied from another computer without its supporting files
- An application whose media component was removed by antivirus software
- A game whose launcher failed to restore all files
The name of the DLL does not identify the exact application. Find that application before changing Windows.
Check when the error appears
Write down the program name shown in the error window. If the message appears immediately after launching a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the shortcut points to an old program folder, open that folder and look for the application’s installer, setup utility, readme file, or media redistributable.
You can also check Task Manager:
- Start the affected program until the error appears.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Details.
- Look for the program’s executable.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
The folder containing the executable is important. A private application DLL normally belongs there, not in a Windows system folder.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely fix because wmaudsdk.dll is generally needed by legacy software rather than by the current Windows installation.
Use Windows’ repair option
For a normally installed application:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A successful repair should allow the original program to open without the wmaudsdk.dll message. If the error changes to a different missing DLL, the original file may have been restored and the program may now be revealing another missing dependency.

Reinstall from the original source
If repair does not work:
- Back up the application’s documents, saved games, presets, or media library.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from its original installer, CD, DVD, ISO, or trusted vendor archive.
- If the installer offers optional audio or Windows Media components, install them.
- Restart the computer again.
- Launch the program from its newly installed shortcut.
Do not copy only the program’s main executable from another computer. Older applications often depend on private DLLs, codecs, configuration files, licensing components, and media redistributables that must be installed together.
Look for a bundled Windows Media installer
Inspect the original installation media and the application’s installation folder for a file named WMAudioRedist.exe, WMFDist.exe, or a similarly named media setup program. Names vary between products.

Microsoft documents a Windows Media Format SDK redistribution package named wmfdist95.exe, but that documentation does not prove that the package contains this exact wmaudsdk.dll. Do not treat it as a guaranteed universal download for this error.
Fix 2: Verify the files for an affected game
If a game launcher reports wmaudsdk.dll, use its repair function before reinstalling the entire game.
Common labels include Verify integrity, Verify files, Scan and repair, and Repair installation. The exact wording depends on the launcher.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The general procedure is:
- Open the game launcher.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or manage menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Let the process finish completely.
- Restart the launcher.
- Start the game again.
This can restore a file removed during an incomplete update or failed installation. It can also restore a bundled Windows Media redistributable when the game’s installer includes one.
If verification completes but the same error returns, inspect the game’s installation folder for a media setup executable. Run it only if it is part of the original game distribution. If the game uses obsolete DRM, an old installer, or unsupported media technology, file verification alone may not make it compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine an old DLL because it is unusual, unsigned, packed, or located in an old application directory. Age alone does not prove that wmaudsdk.dll is malicious.
Check whether Windows Security removed it:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select an entry related to the affected application.
- Review the detected file path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

- It came from the application’s original installer or trusted original media.
- The file path belongs to the expected application.
- You have no other reason to suspect the installer or program.
- A current security scan does not identify the source as unsafe.
If the file came from an untrusted download, do not restore it. Remove the application, scan the computer, and reinstall the program from a trusted original source instead.
After restoring a trusted file, start the application again. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, do not repeatedly override the detection. Keep the file quarantined, update Windows Security, and obtain a clean installer from the application vendor or original media.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture and file location
The commonly indexed wmaudsdk.dll record describes a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit copy and compatible supporting files.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32contains 64-bit system binaries.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit system binaries.- Neither directory is a general-purpose storage location for downloaded DLLs.
For a legacy application, the correct location is often the application’s own folder beside the executable. That is especially true when the program was designed to ship its own private version of an old media component.
To check the program’s architecture and installation folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open Shortcut.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the main executable and related DLLs.
- Do not replace existing files unless the application’s original installer instructs you to do so.
Do not assume that a DLL with the same filename is interchangeable. A mismatched build may load and then fail because another export or companion dependency is absent. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency of wmaudsdk.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this command blindly is not a solution:
regsvr32 wmaudsdk.dll
If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, stop. That usually means the file is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. It does not mean you need to try a different system folder or run the command repeatedly.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that this particular DLL must be registered. Microsoft’s command reference is available in the regsvr32 documentation.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only when Windows itself appears damaged
Modern Windows provides WMA support through Media Foundation, but enabling a current media feature does not guarantee that it will install the old SDK DLL required by a legacy application.

You can check optional media features without assuming they are the fix:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review entries such as Media Features or Windows Media Player Legacy, where available.
- Select only a feature you understand and that your application requires.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not install unrelated Windows features simply because the error contains the word “Media.” Windows Media Services SDK, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Format SDK, Media Foundation, and a program’s private codecs are different components.
Run DISM and SFC when appropriate
Use system repair tools when Windows itself has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated component errors, or Windows features that will not install. They will not normally recreate a third-party DLL stored in an old program’s folder.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft provides the supported procedure in its guide to using System File Checker in Windows.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues that are difficult to identify manually, while its full version handles the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.
If DISM or SFC reports repairs, test the original application. If they report that no integrity violations were found, return to the application installer rather than placing a DLL in System32.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the application points to a driver problem
A graphics, sound, or chipset driver does not normally replace wmaudsdk.dll. Driver updates are therefore not a first-line fix for this specific error.
Consider a driver check only if:
- The application also reports audio device errors.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- Audio stopped working across multiple programs.
- The application documentation identifies a required sound or media driver.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver merely because wmaudsdk.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers appear stale, while its full version performs the driver installation; it is optional, and it should not replace reinstalling the legacy application that actually requires this DLL.
Fix 8: Use compatibility settings for an obsolete program
If the original application is installed correctly but still will not start:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter, or choose a suitable older Windows mode manually.
- Select Apply.
- Start the program again.
Compatibility mode can adjust selected application behaviors. It cannot replace an obsolete codec, restore removed kernel behavior, bypass unsupported DRM, or make a 16-bit installer work on a 64-bit version of Windows.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Review the faulting application and module names.
If the program is fundamentally incompatible with current Windows, run it in a supported older Windows environment or a virtual machine using software and media you are authorized to use. System Restore is a fallback when the issue began immediately after a known system change, but it is not a preferred way to obtain this file.
Why random DLL downloads usually fail
A downloaded DLL can be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- The wrong legacy build
- Modified or bundled with unwanted software
- Missing companion files
- Incompatible with the application’s expected exports
- Placed in a directory that Windows does not search for this application
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also affect unrelated programs and makes the real installation problem harder to diagnose.
Use the application’s original installer, its own repair function, a bundled WMAudioRedist.exe, or a trusted vendor archive instead. Microsoft’s documentation can explain the legacy SDK and redistribution model, but it does not provide a universal current download that guarantees this exact DLL.
FAQ
Is wmaudsdk.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It should not be treated as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. Modern Windows includes Media Foundation support for WMA, but an old application may still require the legacy Windows Media SDK API.
Is it part of Windows Media Player?
The filename identifies an old Windows Media SDK component, not a guaranteed part of every Windows Media Player installation. Enabling Windows Media Player Legacy may not restore an application-specific copy.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. First repair the application that requests it. A private 32-bit application DLL normally belongs beside the executable that loads it.
Should I copy it to SysWOW64 because the file is 32-bit?
Not as a general fix. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system binaries, but it is not a repository for application DLLs.
Does regsvr32 install wmaudsdk.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not a generic command for making an application dependency available.
Will SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not generally restore a missing DLL from an old CD ripper, game, or multimedia application.
What if the error says “specified module could not be found”?
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the complete application and its bundled media components rather than copying another isolated file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if reinstalling does not help?
Check whether antivirus quarantined the file, verify the application’s files, confirm that the program is 32-bit, inspect the application folder, and look for a bundled media redistributable. If the same failure continues, the software may depend on obsolete codecs, DRM, or other behavior unavailable on current Windows.
Is an old wmaudsdk.dll automatically malware?
No. Old software can legitimately contain old Microsoft media components. Judge the file by its source, location, installer, signature, and security scan rather than its age alone.
Is wmfdist95.exe the guaranteed fix?
No. Microsoft documents that package as a Windows Media Format SDK redistribution package, but the documentation does not confirm that it contains this exact wmaudsdk.dll. Prefer the redistributable supplied with the affected application.
