wmerror.dll Won’t Start: Trace Windows Media Errors Safely

The program can’t start because wmerror.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

A wmerror.dll error means Windows or an application cannot load the Windows Media Error Definitions component. The safest solution is to repair Windows or the specific application that expects the file, not to download a replacement DLL from a random website.

Which fix applies to you

Use the situation that best matches what you see:

  • Several media-related programs fail, or the error began after an update, crash, cleanup, or interrupted upgrade: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • You use Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N: install the official Media Feature Pack, then repair or reinstall the affected application.
  • Only one older game or program fails: repair or reinstall that application. It may expect an old private media component.
  • Windows Security shows that the file was quarantined: verify the detection before restoring anything. Repair Windows or reinstall the application if the file was genuine.
  • The error appears only when Windows starts: check startup entries and recently installed software, then use System Restore if the timing matches a system change.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found”: the missing item may be a dependency of wmerror.dll, not necessarily wmerror.dll itself.
  • You are running an old Windows Server installation: Windows Media Services is legacy server technology. Do not install it on a modern desktop simply because a DLL message mentions it.

Start with Windows Update and the DISM/SFC repair sequence unless the error is clearly limited to one application.

What is wmerror.dll

wmerror.dll is a genuine Microsoft file whose description is Windows Media Error Definitions (English). It is associated with Microsoft Windows media components and historically shipped with Microsoft Windows Media Services.

The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or .NET runtime. It is also not a general-purpose DLL that should be copied between computers.

On supported Windows installations, the normal system copy is under:

%SystemRoot%System32

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may use the 32-bit system component in the architecture-aware Windows layout, commonly associated with:

%SystemRoot%SysWOW64

Do not assume that System32 means “32-bit.” On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Windows redirects access for 32-bit processes as needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older inventories show legacy 9.0.0.x versions, while newer Windows releases use different versions and may include both 32-bit and 64-bit variants. The exact file depends on the Windows release, architecture, language, servicing level, and installed media features.

Microsoft’s older security documentation distinguishes Windows Media Services 9 Series on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Media Services 2008 on Windows Server 2008 from the separate Windows Media Format Runtime. That history explains why some descriptions associate wmerror.dll with Windows Media Services, but it does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 user should install Windows Media Services. See Microsoft’s Windows Media Services security bulletin.

What the error message really tells you

You may see one of these messages:

The code execution cannot proceed because wmerror.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
There was a problem starting wmerror.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
Error loading wmerror.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
wmerror.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

These are Windows loader messages. They identify a failure while loading a module, but they do not prove that the named file is the underlying cause.

For example, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency needed by wmerror.dll is missing. A wrong-architecture file, an incompatible application copy, damaged Windows components, or a missing media feature can produce similar symptoms. Microsoft explains how Windows searches for DLLs and dependencies in its dynamic-link library search order documentation.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows

This is the best first repair when the file is missing from the Windows component store, multiple applications fail, or the problem started after a crash or incomplete update.

Install pending updates

On Windows 11:

  1. Press Win + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

On Windows 10:

  1. Press Win + I.
  2. Open Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows.

Test the affected application after restarting. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC can only reliably replace protected files when the component store has a usable source, which is why DISM comes first.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click the result.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if the percentage appears to pause.
  2. Restart Windows when DISM completes.

The command uses the currently running Windows installation. Microsoft documents this repair process in its Windows upgrade troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, retry after installing Windows updates. If it still fails, continue with the SFC scan and consider a Windows repair reinstall later in this guide.

Repairing Windows manually means interpreting DISM and SFC results and tracking which change actually helped. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Launch the program that showed the wmerror.dll error.

SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. Microsoft explains the command and its results in the System File Checker documentation.

If SFC repaired files, the restart is important because Windows may need to replace an in-use component during reboot. If the application still fails, repair that application as described below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC cannot repair everything:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Run DISM again.
  3. Run sfc /scannow again.
  4. Check whether Windows Update is still pending.
  5. If the error persists, inspect the CBS log or use System Restore.
  6. Consider an in-place repair installation if Windows remains damaged.

Do not copy wmerror.dll manually into System32 as a substitute for component repair.

Fix 2: Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N

Windows N editions omit Windows Media Player and related technologies. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack restores Windows Media Player, Windows Media Format, Windows Media Runtime, Media Foundation, Windows Media DRM, and related capabilities. It may be required by an application that expects Windows media components.

Check whether you have an N edition

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
winver
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Check the Windows edition shown in the dialog.

You can also open Settings > System > About on Windows 11 or Settings > System > About on Windows 10. If the edition name includes N, use the Media Feature Pack procedure.

Install it on Windows 11 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
  5. Search for Media Feature Pack.
  6. Select it.
  7. Select Next, then Install.
  8. Restart Windows.

Install it on Windows 10 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select Optional features.
  5. Select Add a feature.
  6. Choose Media Feature Pack.
  7. Select Install.
  8. Restart Windows.

Use Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions if the menu labels differ on your build.

After restarting, repair or reinstall the affected application. Installing the feature pack restores Windows media capabilities, but it does not guarantee that an old program’s private files are intact.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because wmerror.dll is mentioned. Those packages serve different purposes and are not a general replacement for Windows media components.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program reports the error, the application is the leading suspect. It may have an incomplete installation, an outdated launcher, a damaged private DLL, or compatibility problems with the current Windows release.

Try the application’s repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Open its menu.
  6. Select Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Launch the program again.

Some desktop applications provide their own repair tool in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the program, choose Change, and look for Repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game launchers may offer Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files. Use that function before reinstalling the entire game.

Reinstall from the official source

If repair does not help:

  1. Back up the application’s saves, profiles, and configuration files.
  2. Uninstall the application.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the current supported installer from the application’s official publisher or launcher.
  5. Install it again.
  6. Test it before copying old DLLs or modified files into its directory.

If the application requires a private copy of wmerror.dll, use the application’s original installer or repair process. Do not replace it with a file downloaded from a DLL repository. A file with the same name can have a different architecture, version, dependency set, or malicious modification.

If the program is very old, it may simply be incompatible with the current Windows version. In that case, compatibility settings or a supported update from the developer may be more appropriate than replacing a system file.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software can remove a file from either the Windows component area or an application folder. Do not restore it automatically just because a program says it is missing.

Check Protection History

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries related to wmerror.dll.

If the file was removed from an application folder, reinstall the application first. If it was removed from a Windows system location, use DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement.

Only restore and allow a quarantined file after verifying that:

  • It is in the expected Windows or application location.
  • It has a valid Microsoft signature when it is supposed to be a Windows component.
  • The detection is demonstrably false.
  • The surrounding installation has not been altered.

Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its Protection History guidance.

If the file keeps disappearing, investigate malware, disk errors, unauthorized cleanup software, and security-product detections. Repeatedly restoring the file without finding the reason is not a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check the correct architecture

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily load the same copy of a Windows component. Mixing files between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder can create a new error such as:

wmerror.dll is either not designed to run on Windows

or an entry-point failure.

Use the application’s official installer to restore the correct architecture. If the application is 32-bit, install its 32-bit release and let Windows handle system redirection. If it is 64-bit, use the 64-bit release.

Do not solve an architecture problem by copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. The filename alone does not identify a compatible binary.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the symptoms point there

A display, audio, or capture driver is not a normal direct fix for wmerror.dll. Consider drivers only when the media failure began with a broader graphics, audio, camera, or playback problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras if relevant.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Check the General and Driver tabs for error codes or a recent driver change.
  7. Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if available. Do not remove a working driver merely because wmerror.dll is missing.

Driver hunting can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and 32-bit or 64-bit packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through its full version is optional, and the driver itself is not guaranteed to be the cause of this DLL error.

Do not register wmerror.dll with regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.

There is no sound reason to routinely run:

regsvr32 wmerror.dll

wmerror.dll is an error-definition/media component, not a typical self-registering ActiveX control. A registration attempt may return an error saying that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not repair a missing dependency or restore a damaged Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use DISM, SFC, Media Feature Pack installation, or application repair instead.

Rank #4

Use System Restore for a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or application installation and a restore point exists from before the change.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the wmerror.dll problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guide.

Do not use an old restore point if it would remove important software without checking the affected-program list first.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Repair Windows when normal fixes fail

On supported Windows 11 versions, Microsoft provides a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.
  7. Keep the computer connected to power and online until the process finishes.

Microsoft describes this option in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If that option is unavailable, an in-place repair installation using official Windows installation media is the next serious step. Back up important files first and select the option that preserves personal files and applications.

Frequently asked questions

Is wmerror.dll a genuine Microsoft file?

Yes. Its description is Windows Media Error Definitions (English), and genuine copies are associated with Microsoft Windows components. A file with that name in an unexpected application folder is not automatically genuine, however. Location, signature, and the installation that placed it all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download wmerror.dll from a DLL website?

No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows version, or the wrong architecture. They often leave the damaged component store or application installation untouched. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Media Feature Pack, or the official application installer.

Is wmerror.dll part of Windows Media Player?

It is associated with Windows media components, but the filename alone does not identify one specific player or application. Windows N editions omit related media technologies and may require the Media Feature Pack. An old application may also ship or expect its own media files.

Should I install Windows Media Services?

Not on a modern desktop merely to fix this message. Windows Media Services is legacy server technology. Repair the current Windows installation or the application that reports the error.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not normally. wmerror.dll is not one of those runtime files. Install those packages only when the affected application specifically requires them and the official application documentation identifies the dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the file exists but the error remains?

Check the exact program, its architecture, and its installation directory. A dependency may be missing, or the existing file may be incompatible or damaged. Repair the application, then run DISM and SFC if Windows components are also affected.

What information matters when asking for further help?

Record the exact error text, Windows edition including whether it is N, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the program that fails, whether the error appears at startup or only when launching that program, and whether Protection History shows a quarantine event. Also note whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, driver change, malware scan, or application reinstall.

Prevention

  • Keep Windows Update current.
  • Install media-dependent applications from their official launcher or publisher.
  • Keep a backup of game saves and application profiles before reinstalling.
  • Do not use registry cleaners or DLL download sites to replace system components.
  • Check Windows Security Protection History before restoring quarantined files.
  • Avoid copying DLLs between different Windows releases or architectures.
  • Create a restore point before major driver or system changes.
  • If an old application repeatedly fails, look for a supported update rather than mixing legacy DLLs into modern Windows folders.

The reliable repair path is to identify whether the failure belongs to Windows, a Windows N media feature, or one application. Once that boundary is clear, the fix is usually component repair, Media Feature Pack installation, application reinstallation, or a controlled Windows recovery operation rather than manual DLL replacement.
