The message can appear when Windows starts, when an application launches, or when software attempts to query system information.

The 60-second answer

wmipdskq.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called WMI Provider for Disk Quota Information. It belongs to Windows Management Instrumentation and supports the Win32_DiskQuota class, which tracks disk-space usage and quota information for users on NTFS volumes.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The safest repair is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run System File Checker immediately afterward.
  4. Restart and test the affected program.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged or missing copies. This restores the version appropriate for your Windows build and system architecture instead of forcing an old DLL into the wrong directory.

What wmipdskq.dll does

Microsoft documents wmipdskq.dll as the provider behind the Win32_DiskQuota WMI class. Its associated provider files include:

  • Wmipdskq.dll
  • Wmipdskq.mof
  • The RootCIMV2 WMI namespace

The provider reports disk-quota information for users on NTFS volumes. It is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or ordinary application runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s documentation for Win32_DiskQuota and WMI providers explains its role.

Where the file normally belongs

The usual 64-bit Windows path is:

%windir%System32wbemwmipdskq.dll

That normally resolves to:

C:WindowsSystem32wbemwmipdskq.dll

The exact location can vary with Windows architecture and component redirection. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes may see redirected system paths and use components under:

%windir%SysWOW64

Do not manually choose between System32 and SysWOW64. Despite its name, System32 is commonly the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows. WOW64 redirection determines which architecture a process sees. Microsoft describes this behavior in its documentation for the file-system redirector.

Which Windows versions contain it

Public file indexes report historical copies associated with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10. They also list examples such as a 32-bit build numbered 6.1.7600.16385 and a later Windows 10 build numbered 10.0.19041.1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are historical examples, not universal requirements. Microsoft does not publish a simple public version matrix for every wmipdskq.dll build. The correct file depends on the installed Windows edition, build, servicing state, and architecture.

Is wmipdskq.dll malware

The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe or malicious. A genuine copy should normally be located inside the Windows component directories and have a valid Microsoft digital signature.

Check the copy that Windows or the error message is reporting:

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the reported file location.
  3. Right-click wmipdskq.dll and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  5. Select the signature and choose Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
  7. On the General or Details tab, compare the file description with WMI Provider for Disk Quota Information.

A copy with this name in a game folder, temporary directory, download folder, or unrelated application directory is not automatically genuine. Do not replace it merely because its filename looks correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Microsoft Defender quarantined the file:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review detections involving wmipdskq.dll.
  5. Verify the path and signature before considering restoration.

If the file is in an unexpected directory or the signature is invalid, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than restoring an unverified copy.

Why the error happens

A missing-file message does not identify the root cause. The common possibilities are different:

Cause What it means Appropriate response
Missing component The file was deleted, quarantined, or never restored after servicing Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Corrupted component The file or component store is damaged Run DISM, then SFC
Wrong architecture A 32-bit process is being given an incompatible 64-bit binary, or the reverse Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy
Missing dependency “Specified module could not be found” refers to a dependency rather than this DLL Repair Windows and investigate the calling program
Broken WMI registration WMI metadata or related system files are damaged Repair Windows before attempting registration changes
Malware or replacement An unauthorized file has the same name Scan, verify the path and signature, and remove unsafe copies
Recent system change An update, driver, or application change caused the failure Use Windows Update or System Restore

Reinstalling a game or ordinary application may not restore this file because wmipdskq.dll is a Windows-owned WMI provider. Reinstall an application only when evidence shows that the application itself supplied the missing component.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An interrupted or incomplete Windows update can leave system components unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, choose Windows Update.
  3. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
  7. Launch the program that produced the error.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly reinstall the affected application before repairing Windows.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows component.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Use Command Prompt rather than a normal, non-elevated window. The repair cannot modify protected Windows components without administrator rights.

Run DISM

Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Press Enter and wait for the command to finish. It can pause at a percentage for an extended period. Do not close the window while it is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it repaired the component store, proceed to SFC.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator window, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the affected program again.

If SFC repaired files and the error disappears, the Windows component was probably damaged or missing. If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, continue with the checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC without knowing what changed rarely adds useful information. If you want a guided scan that identifies repair issues before applying its paid repair step, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of checking system problems; Windows DISM and SFC remain the official repair path.

If DISM cannot find source files

DISM may fail when Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess.

The source must closely match the installed Windows version and architecture. Do not guess at a source path or use files copied from another computer. Use official Windows installation media and follow Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Fix 3: Check Defender quarantine and scan for malware

If the file disappeared suddenly, antivirus quarantine is one possible explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Protection history

  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Open Protection history.
  4. Look for a detection involving wmipdskq.dll.
  5. Note the complete path and detection details.
  6. Restore the file only if the path is a normal Windows component path and the file’s Microsoft signature is valid.

If the path points to an application folder or an unfamiliar directory, do not restore it simply to make the error disappear. A malicious or modified file may use a legitimate Windows filename.

Run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Choose Scan now.

Follow the result with DISM and SFC. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how Defender records actions.

Fix 4: Check the calling program and dependencies

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wmipdskq.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the provider or by the program that called it.

Record the following before making changes:

  • The complete error text
  • The executable that reports it
  • The full path shown in the message
  • Whether the error occurs at startup or only when launching one program
  • Your Windows edition and build
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The file’s signature status
  • Recent updates, driver installations, antivirus detections, or software changes

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Read System type under Device specifications.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit directory or the reverse. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application cannot use interchangeable binaries. Windows system redirection also means that a path displayed by one process may not correspond to the physical path viewed by another.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began after a driver, update, or software installation, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.

If no suitable restore point exists, continue with an in-place repair rather than downloading a loose DLL.

Fix 6: Repair Windows with the current installation

Windows 11 may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now, if the option is available.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Restart and test the affected program.

The option is not available on every installation. Microsoft describes it in its guide to reinstalling the current Windows version.

Fix 7: Reinstall Windows in place using official media

Use an in-place reinstall when DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not repair the component.

Before starting:

  • Back up important files.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
  • Confirm that you can sign in to Windows.
  • Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Start Windows normally, mount or open the official installation media, and run setup.exe from inside Windows. When prompted for what to keep, choose Keep personal files and apps where offered.

Do not boot directly from the media if your goal is an in-place repair that preserves installed programs. A clean installation has different consequences.

What about regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer function to register COM components. It does not download a missing file, repair the Windows component store, or resolve an incompatible dependency.

Some historical metadata indicates that certain wmipdskq.dll builds expose registration-related functions. That does not make this command a normal end-user fix:

regsvr32 wmipdskq.dll

Use regsvr32 only when Microsoft documentation or a specific administrator deployment procedure requires it. Running the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version can produce errors such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The module failed to load.
  • The specified module could not be found.
  • The entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Repair Windows first. Do not rebuild the WMI repository or manually register multiple providers as an initial response, because those actions can damage unrelated WMI registrations.

Driver checks: when they are relevant

A graphics or storage driver is not a verified source of wmipdskq.dll, but a recent driver change can coincide with broader Windows component problems or cause the application that reports the error to fail.

If the problem began after a driver update:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Choose Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Storage controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Choose Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the driver date and provider.
  8. Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the issue began after the update.
  9. Otherwise choose Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
  10. Restart Windows.

Do not replace wmipdskq.dll with a driver package. If manually identifying outdated hardware drivers is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version.

Windows Features and WMI

There is normally no separate Windows Feature that you need to install just to obtain wmipdskq.dll. It is part of Windows WMI servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still check whether optional Windows components are reporting errors:

  1. Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Review the feature list for any component that was recently disabled.
  4. Restore only a feature you recognize and specifically need.
  5. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not randomly enable features to replace this DLL. If WMI itself appears damaged, use DISM and SFC first.

Avoid these failed fixes

Do not:

  • Download wmipdskq.dll from a DLL-sharing website.
  • Copy an old file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
  • Install Visual C++ Redistributables just to obtain this Windows WMI provider.
  • Install DirectX or .NET packages as a generic response.
  • Register the DLL repeatedly with regsvr32.
  • Rebuild the WMI repository before repairing Windows.
  • Assume a game caused the problem without identifying the calling executable.
  • Restore an antivirus-quarantined file without checking its path and signature.

A loose DLL can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, dependencies, language, or signature. It can also conceal the underlying component-store damage.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, System Restore, the Windows 11 recovery reinstall where available, and official Windows installation media.

FAQ

Is wmipdskq.dll a real Windows file?

Yes. It is the Microsoft WMI Provider for Disk Quota Information and supports the Win32_DiskQuota class.

Should I download wmipdskq.dll?

No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone download package readers should use for this DLL. Restore it through Windows servicing or official Windows recovery.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Not normally. wmipdskq.dll is a Windows WMI component, not a Visual C++ runtime payload.

Will reinstalling the game fix the error?

Only if the game supplied the file, which is not established for this Windows-owned provider. Repair Windows first. Reinstall the application if its own files are also damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Architecture redirection makes manual placement unsafe, and copying a DLL does not repair its dependencies, registration, or the Windows component store.

Should I run regsvr32 wmipdskq.dll?

Not as a routine repair. regsvr32 registers certain COM DLLs but does not restore missing files or repair Windows servicing.

What if DISM and SFC both finish successfully?

Restart, check Defender Protection history, verify the file path and signature, and identify the executable reporting the error. If the problem began after a recent change, try System Restore. For persistent installation damage, use an in-place Windows repair.

What should I provide to support?

Provide your Windows edition and build, system architecture, full error text, reporting executable, file path, digital-signature result, and recent update, driver, antivirus, or software changes.
