wmipicmp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. If wmipicmp.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading a replacement.
The file is the WMI ICMP Echo Provider. It exposes standard ping results through the Win32_PingStatus class in the rootcimv2 namespace. Its normal location is:
%windir%System32wbemwmipicmp.dll
The safest repair order is Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and then a Windows repair installation if those tools cannot restore the protected component.
What wmipicmp.dll does
Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI, lets applications and administration tools query system information through structured classes and providers. The ICMP Echo Provider is the WMI component responsible for making ordinary ping-style results available to software.

Programs can query Win32_PingStatus instead of implementing all of the ping handling themselves. The provider is associated with Wmipicmp.mof, a WMI metadata file that describes how the provider is registered. The DLL and its MOF file work as part of Windows WMI, not as a standalone library normally installed into a game folder.
Microsoft documents the provider in its Ping Provider documentation and describes the Win32_PingStatus class.
Before repairing anything
Check the expected path
- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
text
%windir%System32wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
wmipicmp.dll.
Do not treat a copy in a game directory, Downloads, AppData, Temp, or another user-writable folder as a normal installation. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native system components. Windows also maintains separate architecture-specific locations and components, so copying a 32-bit or differently built DLL into this folder is not a safe substitute.
To inspect a file that does exist, right-click it, choose Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab. The expected component should have a valid Microsoft signature and should be located in the Windows WMI directory.
Recommended Free Tools
The exact version varies with Windows build, edition, architecture, and servicing level. Do not choose the “latest” file from a download database.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation can leave protected files inconsistent. Windows Update is the correct source for the matching component.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when prompted.
- Repeat the check after restarting if Windows reports that more updates are available.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Test the program or management tool that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a loose DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if the progress percentage appears to pause.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected WMI operation again.
A successful DISM run reports that the restore operation completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption that it could not repair.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair features require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If it still cannot repair the component, continue to the Windows repair options below.
Use a matching DISM source if Windows Update is damaged
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example location. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not substitute a random ISO, a downloaded DLL, or an unrelated Windows installation.

Fix 3: Check Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software can quarantine or delete a system file after a detection. Do not restore a quarantined item merely because its filename is wmipicmp.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wmipicmp.dll. - Note the detected path and detection name.
- If the item was in
%windir%System32wbem, inspect its signature and run a Defender scan before considering restoration. - If it was in a temporary folder, an application folder, or another unexpected path, do not restore it.
- Run Scan options > Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if you have reason to suspect malware.
Microsoft explains Protection history and quarantine behavior. Restoring a quarantined file causes Defender to examine it again, but that does not make an impostor safe.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the current Windows installation
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
Use this when Windows Update, DISM, and SFC cannot restore the component.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every Windows 11 configuration.
Installation media repair
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose the repair or upgrade path that preserves your files and applications. Back up important data first, then follow Microsoft’s Windows installation media guidance.

If the failure began immediately after an update or system change, System Restore may also help:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings and normally does not remove personal files. Microsoft lists it among the Windows recovery options.
Fix 5: Check WMI registration only after the file is restored
Time needed: 15 minutes for diagnosis; longer for advanced repair.
A missing Win32_PingStatus class is not always the same problem as a missing DLL. If wmipicmp.dll and Wmipicmp.mof exist in the expected WMI directory but the provider is unavailable, WMI registration or repository health may be involved.
Do not begin by deleting or rebuilding the WMI repository. That can create additional problems and should be reserved for a diagnosis showing repository damage.
The provider is associated with MOF metadata. Microsoft documents running the MOF compiler, but recompiling system MOF files should not be a casual first-line repair. Windows servicing or a repair installation is safer when the system files themselves are damaged.
Fix 6: Update network drivers only when ping itself is failing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
A network driver can affect whether ping works, but reinstalling a network driver does not normally restore wmipicmp.dll. Use this step when the DLL is present and signed, WMI repairs complete successfully, but network operations fail.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test connectivity with the application or management tool.
Do not remove an adapter unless you have the correct driver and know how to reinstall it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL fix
regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry points expected by that tool. This WMI provider is associated with WMI and MOF registration, so repeatedly running commands such as these is not a reliable repair:
regsvr32 wmipicmp.dll
regsvr32 %windir%System32wbemwmipicmp.dll
They may produce an error or create the impression that registration succeeded without repairing WMI. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the tool’s actual purpose.
Why the error appears
Common causes include:
- A damaged or missing Windows component
- An incomplete Windows update or servicing operation
- Accidental deletion
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk or filesystem damage
- Malware or an impostor file
- WMI registration or repository damage
- A missing dependency behind the message “The specified module could not be found”
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wmipicmp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wmipicmp.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wmipicmp.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “wmipicmp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency failure, not necessarily the named DLL itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo specific mainstream game or application has been verified as the normal owner of this file. If the message appears while launching a particular program, first determine whether that program is calling Windows WMI or merely exposing an underlying Windows problem. Reinstalling a game is not the normal first fix for this system component.
If wmipicmp.dll still will not load
Record these details before asking for deeper help:
- Does
%windir%System32wbemwmipicmp.dllexist? - Is the file Microsoft-signed?
- Does the error occur during boot, while launching a management tool, or inside a particular application?
- Did Windows Security quarantine or remove it?
- What Windows edition, version, and architecture are installed?
- What did DISM report?
- What did SFC report?
- Is
Wmipicmp.mofpresent in the same WMI directory? - Does the problem affect ping itself, WMI queries, or only one application?
Avoid DLL download sites, registry cleaners, arbitrary driver packages, and manual copying into System32 or an application folder. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, official Microsoft installation media, and a verified Windows repair installation.
FAQ
Is wmipicmp.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A same-named file outside %windir%System32wbem is suspicious and should be scanned, especially if it is in a temporary or user-writable folder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I download wmipicmp.dll?
No. An arbitrary download can have the wrong architecture, build, servicing level, or malicious content. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows repair media.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified Microsoft runtime package that owns this file. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the normal fix.
Will reinstalling my game fix it?
Usually not. wmipicmp.dll belongs to Windows WMI. Repair Windows first unless the software vendor specifically documents a separate deployment.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Not normally. WMI providers use WMI and MOF registration rather than generic DLL registration.
