Warner Bros. Games canceled Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman game and announced the closure of Monolith, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego on February 25, 2025. The publisher said it was redirecting studio structure and investment toward Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.
Why was the Wonder Woman game canceled?
Warner Bros. Games said the project “will not move forward.” Its spokesperson described the decision as part of “a strategic change in direction,” saying the company had to organize development studios and investment around its priority franchises. The publisher also said its hope had been to deliver a high-quality experience for the character, but that was no longer possible within its strategic priorities. These are the company’s stated reasons; they do not establish why the project ran into difficulty or why each studio was closed. Variety’s report quotes the statement.
The company named Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones as key franchises. The inclusion of DC means the cancellation should not be read as an announcement that Warner Bros. was abandoning all DC games.
Which studios did Warner Bros. close?
| Studio | What it was working on or known for |
|---|---|
| Monolith Productions | Developed the canceled Wonder Woman game and was known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. |
| Player First Games | Developed MultiVersus. |
| Warner Bros. Games San Diego | Was working on an unannounced free-to-play project, according to coverage of the closure. |
Warner Bros. Games announced all three closures alongside the game cancellation on February 25, 2025. Its spokesperson said the decision was “not a reflection of these teams or the talent” at the studios. The announcement coverage reports the closures and the publisher’s explanation.

What was the canceled game supposed to be?
Announced in December 2021, Monolith’s game was described as a single-player, open-world action game with an original story set in the DC Universe. Players were to become Diana of Themyscira. The announcement did not establish a release date, confirmed platforms, or final gameplay details, and the cited reporting does not establish that a completed build existed. Variety’s report recounts the original concept and the cancellation.
Was the Wonder Woman game ever released?
No. Warner Bros. Games said development would not move forward, so the announced Monolith project was canceled rather than released. The cited coverage does not report a revived or successor project.

What do the reported spending figures mean?
Several figures circulated around the cancellation, but they refer to different things and have different levels of certainty.
- More than $100 million on the game: GameSpot relayed a separate report that Warner Bros. had spent more than $100 million on the project and that it was nowhere close to release. This is a reported estimate, not an audited final budget or a figure confirmed by Warner Bros. Games. GameSpot’s coverage attributes the estimate.
- More than $100 million in Q3 2024: Variety reported a games-division impairment charge above that amount, based on company executive disclosures. It is not a project-specific Wonder Woman cost. Variety’s financial report describes the charge.
- More than $300 million in 2024: Variety also reported total games write-downs above $300 million for the year, based on executive disclosures. This, too, covers the games division rather than the canceled game alone. Variety’s report distinguishes the broader figure.
The figures should not be added together: the reported project spend and division-level accounting charges describe different measures, and the cited sources do not establish that they are mutually exclusive.
