Keep green letters in their confirmed positions and include yellow letters, even if you would rather try a word made from new letters. It changes which guesses are allowed—not which allowed guess is best.
What is Wordle Hard Mode?
Hard Mode is a rule constraint on your guesses. The official Wordle instructions state: “Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses.” Green feedback means a letter is correct in the correct position; yellow feedback means the letter is in the answer but in another position. A later guess must preserve known green placements and include revealed yellow letters.
In standard mode, you can set clues aside for a turn and try a word containing fresh letters. Hard Mode does not allow that once those clues have been revealed. The restriction matters most when several possible answers remain and a guess using new letters could help distinguish them.
How should you choose a Hard Mode guess?
Using the clues and choosing a strategically useful word are separate tasks. A guess can obey the rule yet do little to narrow the answer choices. Before entering a word, consider both the constraints from feedback and how the guess could separate the plausible answers.

- Record the constraints. Note the green letters in their fixed positions and the yellow letters that still need placement.
- Consider the remaining answers. Keep track of which plausible words fit all the feedback so far.
- Compare legal guesses. Prefer a word that obeys the constraints and distinguishes likely candidates. If few candidates remain, guessing one directly may be sensible; if many remain, consider how a guess divides them.
Do not treat the rule as simply “include the yellow letters.” Green placements also matter, and letter feedback can make a word that looks plausible invalid or unhelpful. A fresh-letter probe may be useful in standard mode, but Hard Mode requires the revealed clues to stay in play. These are strategic implications of the rules and published solver analysis, not claims from personal testing.

- Choose Hard Mode if you enjoy having the game enforce clue use and want that added constraint to shape each turn.
- Choose standard mode if you want the option to try an exploratory word built from fresh letters when several answers remain.
- Use a flexible approach if you like solving within the clues but want the option to break those constraints when a probe seems valuable. Standard mode permits that choice.
Neither setting is established as universally better, and the available evidence does not show that Hard Mode always improves scores or produces worse human outcomes. The choice is about constraint and preferred strategy, not a proven universal scoring advantage.
What do published strategy figures show?
An IEEE COG 2022 paper, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, reports results for a particular Hard Mode strategy simulated across two runs on a set of 2,315 answers:

The paper notes that random choices could produce different outcomes in repeated runs. These figures describe that study’s method and simulation; they are not a benchmark for all NYT Wordle players or a prediction of an individual player’s results.

The current menu path for enabling or disabling the setting has not been established across the NYT Wordle app, browser, account, or regional versions. Check the settings in your current game rather than relying on a possibly outdated click path.
