A strong Wordle opener tests five different, common letters in plausible positions—but no single starting word is best for every player or every scoring method. Choose a word you can remember, use its green, yellow, and gray feedback carefully, and judge alternatives by what you want to optimize: narrowing candidates, solving quickly, or enjoying the game.

What makes a Wordle starting word useful?

Wordle gives you a five-letter target and up to six guesses. Green tiles mark letters in the correct position; yellow tiles mark letters that are in the answer but belong elsewhere; gray tiles indicate letters the answer does not contain, with repeated letters sometimes making the count less obvious. The opening guess is valuable not only when it happens to be the answer, but because its tile pattern can divide the remaining possibilities into smaller groups.

That is why a word with five distinct letters is often a practical choice: it tests more letters than an opener with a repeat. Common letters help, and their positions matter too—some analysis favors letters where they are more likely to appear in the answer. These are useful heuristics, not a guarantee of a quick solve. An opener that looks good by general letter frequency may still leave a large group of answers with the same feedback pattern.

Before calling any word “best,” decide what you mean. You might want to reduce the candidate list, improve your average guesses, maximize the chance of a one-guess solve, or simply start with a word you know how to spell. Those goals can produce different rankings.

How to choose an opener you can use consistently

  1. Pick five distinct letters. Prefer common letters, but do not treat any fixed set of vowels or consonants as mandatory.
  2. Use plausible positions. A letter’s usefulness depends partly on where it appears in the guess, since feedback identifies both presence and position.
  3. Choose a familiar word. A starter you can recall and spell confidently is easier to use consistently and interpret.
  4. Keep the objective in view. If you care about possible first-guess wins, check whether your proposed word is eligible as an answer in the game’s current list; that status can change.
  5. Learn from the pattern. Once you settle on an opener, pay attention to which candidate answers remain after its common feedback outcomes rather than switching words based on a supposed universal ranking.

What the common starter recommendations actually measure

Published rankings are not interchangeable: some estimate how many candidates remain, some use letter or position frequencies, and others examine real players. The examples below are useful comparisons, not an official or timeless NYT ranking.

Word or group What the cited analysis says How to interpret it
IRATE, RAISE, ARISE NYT Game Solver ranks them first, second, and third by expected remaining answers across its tracked 1,810-answer corpus; it reports about 47.6 expected answers left for IRATE and 48.4 for RAISE. A third-party candidate-reduction metric tied to that corpus, not an official endorsement or a guarantee of a better human result.
SLATE The New York Times used SLATE as the comparison opener in its observational analysis of ADIEU starters. TechRadar’s position-frequency analysis also favors SLATE. A point of comparison across human outcomes and a particular position-frequency method, not proof that SLATE is best for every goal.
CRANE, TRACE The New York Times analysis lists these among WordleBot-approved openers; TechRadar also discusses them as examples of varied, high-frequency letters. Options to consider when you value familiar, information-rich opening guesses.
SALET TechRadar describes a separate optimization result favoring SALET, while noting it was not in the older 2,309-word answer list discussed in that article. A solver result tied to a particular older list. That historical count does not establish current answer eligibility.
ADIEU or AUDIO These vowel-heavy openers are popular. In its analysis of common openers, the New York Times found ADIEU starters averaged about one-third of a turn more than SLATE starters. They test several vowels early, but that alone does not make them the most efficient opener by observed outcomes.

In TechRadar’s 2024 analysis, E, A, R, O, and T were the five most frequent letters in the answer list it examined. That is a dataset-specific result, not a current official NYT distribution. Similarly, the NYT Game Solver figures describe its tracked corpus, not an authoritative live list.

Why “more vowels” is not a complete strategy

ADIEU and AUDIO appeal because they can reveal several vowels at once. But Wordle answers also depend on consonants and letter positions, and a vowel-heavy guess may not split likely answers as effectively as a more balanced word. The New York Times analysis by Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia, based on player outcomes, reported a 3.6% failure rate for ADIEU starters versus 1.7% for SLATE starters, as well as the difference in average turns. The authors cautioned that this was observational: players who chose ADIEU may differ from those who chose SLATE, so the comparison does not prove that ADIEU caused worse results.

How to use feedback after the first guess

  1. Lock in greens. Keep each green letter in its confirmed position in later guesses.
  2. Move yellows. Keep each yellow letter in your candidate set, but test it in a different position; do not place it where you already know it cannot go.
  3. Use grays carefully. Eliminate gray letters when the feedback establishes that they are absent. With repeated letters, a gray tile does not always mean the answer contains no copy of that letter: another copy may have received green or yellow feedback.
  4. Choose the next guess for its job. It can test likely candidates or gather information by trying useful, untested letters. In a mode that allows it, an information-gathering word should still respect any game constraints and should not discard known greens or yellow-letter placement rules.

A second information word can be worthwhile when the first guess leaves many plausible answers, but it is not a requirement. In one 2022 simulation, Prof. Barry Smyth’s team reported that using one- or two-word seed approaches performed better than relying on a three-word set. That result belongs to the study’s simulator and word pool; it is not a universal rule for human play.

What published Wordle statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Different studies answer different questions, so their figures should not be combined as though they measured the same players, list, or objective.

  • Simulation: The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics reported one million simulated games in 2022. Its simulator used a pool of 2,500 five-letter words and reported that 95% of games were solved within six guesses, with roughly four rounds on average. Those are results for that simulation, not a forecast or guarantee for current Wordle.
  • Player outcomes: The New York Times analysis of 515 million Wordles compared real starting-word outcomes, but its authors noted that observational data cannot isolate the effect of the opener from differences among players.
  • Candidate reduction: The NYT Game Solver ranking estimates remaining answers using its own tracked 1,810-answer corpus. It is useful for understanding that method’s result, not for declaring an official best word.
  • Letter frequency: TechRadar’s 2024 position-frequency approach reflects the list it analyzed. It can suggest useful letters and placements without establishing today’s official answer distribution.

Historical simulations and papers also use their own word lists. Their counts and rankings are snapshots, not current official NYT totals.

A simple decision rule

  • If you want a dependable everyday opener, choose a familiar word with five distinct, common letters in plausible positions.
  • If you want to compare solver rankings, check what each one optimizes and which answer list it uses.
  • If you want the best chance of a first-guess solve, confirm that your opener is currently eligible to be an answer.
  • If you enjoy vowel discovery, use a vowel-heavy opener because you like it—not because vowels alone guarantee stronger performance.
