Yes—some Mac players do encounter World of Warcraft launch failures and crashes, but there is no evidence here of one confirmed crash affecting every Mac. The cause may be a Mac below the current expansion’s minimum requirements, Battle.net or file-permission trouble, a macOS/client compatibility issue, or a patch-specific game bug. One important check: Blizzard forum discussion of the Midnight requirements lists Apple M2 or newer, or Intel Coffee Lake/9th-generation or newer; an M1 Mac is therefore below that reported minimum even if it ran an earlier version. First, identify where the failure happens
The point at which WoW stops is a useful clue. Modern WoW and Classic versions are installed separately through Battle.net, and their requirements can differ. Confirm which branch you are starting before applying a fix: Blizzard’s installation guide explains the Battle.net installation flow.

Before troubleshooting, note your Mac model and year, chip, macOS version, WoW branch and build, where the game is installed, free storage, and whether the problem began after a macOS, WoW, or Battle.net update. Also note any antivirus, endpoint security, overlay, recording tool, external display, unusual audio device, or addon in use.
Check whether your Mac meets the version’s requirements
For Midnight, Blizzard’s support forum discussion quotes a Mac minimum of M2 or later for Apple silicon, or Intel Coffee Lake/9th-generation or later. Treat that as the stated requirement for this expansion, not as a guarantee that every qualifying Mac is trouble-free. If your Mac is below the relevant minimum, repeated repairs or a full reinstall are unlikely to make it reliably supported. In particular, an M1 Mac may have run The War Within yet still fall below the reported Midnight baseline. Check the requirement for the exact WoW branch you play rather than applying a Modern WoW requirement to Classic.
Intel Macs
Check the processor generation as well as the macOS version. Blizzard staff historically described crashes on connection affecting some Intel Macs running macOS Sonoma 14.0 and said the issue was under investigation with Apple. That report documents a compatibility pattern at that time; it does not establish the cause of a current crash on every Intel Mac. Read the Sonoma discussion.

Apple-silicon Macs
Apple silicon is not a single support category: the reported Midnight minimum is M2 or newer, putting M1 below that baseline. M2-and-newer Macs can still have launcher, permission, macOS, or patch-related problems. Recent topics in Blizzard’s Mac support forums include user reports about Battle.net and WoW launch issues on Tahoe, but forum reports are not a formal diagnosis or a universal Tahoe bug notice. Try these fixes in order
- Restart your Mac. Then open Battle.net and let any launcher or WoW update finish before testing.
- Confirm the selected game version. In Battle.net, select World of Warcraft and check that you are launching the intended Modern or Classic branch. If the button says Install even though files are present, use Locate the game and point Battle.net to the existing installation before downloading again. Blizzard documents installation and locating a game here.
- Run Scan and Repair. In the Battle.net desktop app, select World of Warcraft, choose the affected game version, open the gear/options menu beside Play, select Scan and Repair, then Begin Scan. Wait for the scan and any resulting repair or update to finish; restart Battle.net and test again. Blizzard recommends repairing damaged game files as part of its WoW technical troubleshooting. A Sequoia-user forum post describes Scan and Repair prompting a small update before launching worked again, but that is an individual report, not a guaranteed fix: read the report.
- If you can reach login or character selection, test without addons. Update addons, disable them all, and retry. If the crash stops, re-enable them in batches to find the likely cause. To test a clean interface, quit WoW and rename—not delete—the
Interface,WTF, andCachefolders in the affected WoW installation. Renaming preserves a route back to your existing settings. Blizzard’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends disabling addons and resetting the UI: WoW technical troubleshooting. - Check permissions, security software, and storage. Respond to macOS privacy or security prompts for Blizzard applications. Check that the game volume is writable, has adequate free space, and is not blocked by antivirus or endpoint security. If you use security software, prefer a narrow exception for Blizzard applications over turning protection off; if you briefly disable it to test, restore it immediately. External or case-sensitive volumes can introduce separate compatibility issues. Blizzard’s Mac guidance covers permissions and security software and provides Mac support resources. Do not use broad recursive permission commands such as
chmod -R 777. - Reset Battle.net files if the launcher still misbehaves. This is aimed at a damaged launcher state, not an unsupported Mac or a game crash tied to a particular scene. Follow the Mac procedure below.
- Reinstall only after the earlier checks fail. A reinstall takes time and will not fix below-minimum hardware or a macOS/client regression. If you reinstall, verify the selected WoW version and installation location first.
Reset Battle.net files on Mac
Use Blizzard’s procedure for a damaged Battle.net state. It can make the launcher forget where installed games are, without necessarily removing the game data itself.

- Open Activity Monitor and quit all processes named Agent, Blizzard Battle.net, and WoW.
- In Finder, choose Go → Computer, then navigate to
/Users/Shared/Battle.net/Agent. - Delete
agent.db, then relaunch Battle.net and test. - If that does not help, quit the processes again and delete the
Agentfolder. - If the problem persists, delete
/Users/Shared/Battle.net, then relaunch Battle.net. - If Battle.net shows Install instead of Play, use Locate the game to select the existing WoW installation before deciding to download it again.
These paths and recovery steps are from Blizzard’s Deleting Battle.net Files instructions. Removing launcher data can require locating games again; it does not by itself prove the WoW files are gone.

Updating macOS can fix system-library or compatibility problems, but a new release can also bring regressions. Check Blizzard’s current support topics and relevant macOS release information before upgrading, and back up important data first. Do not downgrade macOS casually: doing so can require a backup and a recovery process, and may affect other software or files.

Crashes after WoW reaches the world are different from a launcher failure. Following the Midnight pre-patch, players reported crashes entering housing or loading areas, as well as black terrain and sudden crashes. Those reports indicate patch-specific in-game problems, not a proven explanation for a game that exits before login. See the pre-patch crash discussion and black-terrain reports.

These are diagnostic changes for an in-game crash; they are not a fix for a Play button that does nothing.

When more local troubleshooting is unlikely to help
- Your Mac is below the specific version’s minimum: stop repeating repairs and reinstalls; they cannot change the hardware requirement.
- The crash started with a macOS update and persists on a supported Mac: capture the exact macOS build and report the issue. If it appears tied to the system update, send the report to Blizzard and Apple rather than assuming either is solely responsible.
- The failure is limited to a new WoW patch or particular area: keep the symptom distinction clear when checking Blizzard’s support forums or contacting support. A client-side patch fix may be needed.
- You have already tested repairs, permissions, and a clean UI without change: a full reinstall may still be reasonable for damaged installation files, but it is not a likely remedy for a compatibility defect.
What to include in a Blizzard support report
Useful details let support distinguish a launcher failure from a client or graphics crash. Include:
- Mac model and year, processor/chip, and exact macOS version.
- WoW branch and game build or patch, plus whether the installation is on an external drive.
- When the problem began and whether it followed a macOS, WoW, or Battle.net update.
- The exact crash wording, whether a Blizzard reporter appeared, and whether failure occurs before login, at character selection, or in a particular zone.
- Whether launching through Battle.net and direct launch behave differently; use direct launch only as a diagnostic comparison, not as the preferred permanent route.
- Whether Scan and Repair changed anything, and whether the game was tested with addons disabled.
- Any relevant Console crash report identifiers.
Before posting logs publicly, remove account credentials, authentication tokens, personal file paths where appropriate, and unrelated system data.
