There is no universally best World of Warcraft race: the right fit depends on your class, the utility you want, and the character you want to play. The detailed racial abilities compared here are for World of Warcraft: Forever, which Blizzard announced in September 2026. They should not be treated as a guide to live Midnight; Blizzard announced Midnight as live in March 2026, and the sources available here do not establish its complete current racial abilities or class-eligibility matrix.
First, identify which version you are choosing for
Blizzard’s September 22, 2026 article describes race and class options for World of Warcraft: Forever, a separately named version. Its race tables mark which combinations are available, and some racials were updated for Forever. Blizzard’s playable-races page and March 2026 Midnight launch announcement do not provide a full current live-game ability set and class matrix in the material cited here. The Forever examples below are therefore useful for making a version-specific choice, not for assuming that a live Midnight character has the same traits.
For current live play, verify the race, class, and ability information in the game or current official documentation before choosing. The Haranir, for example, were announced as a new allied race unlocked through the Harandar zone level-up campaign in the Midnight launch announcement; that fact alone does not establish their full racial kit or class eligibility.
How to compare racials without chasing a universal ranking
Start with class eligibility
If you have a class in mind, remove races that cannot play it in the version you intend to play. Blizzard’s Forever overview explicitly recommends considering both class and eligible races, and supplies separate Alliance and Horde race-class tables. A racial cannot compensate for a class combination that is unavailable.

Separate active abilities from passive traits
Blizzard’s Forever design recap says each race has two active and two passive abilities. An active asks you to choose when to use it; a passive is an ongoing trait or a conditional benefit. Consider whether you enjoy managing a situational button, or prefer a benefit that applies without an extra action. Exact effects and conditions still matter: a bonus that only works with a particular weapon, for instance, is not unconditional.
Match utility to what you value
Compare the kind of help a racial provides rather than treating every damage bonus as interchangeable. The Forever examples include crowd-control responses, damage mitigation, recovery, underwater breathing, tracking, and weapon- or target-specific bonuses. A narrow effect may be valuable when its condition comes up and irrelevant otherwise; its presence does not prove the race is stronger overall.

Let character identity count
Race is also part of the character’s story, appearance, and journey. Blizzard’s Forever recap describes racials as a way to make races feel distinct and give players a reason to experience the journey from a new perspective. If two eligible choices offer utility you like, choosing the race whose identity you enjoy is a sound tie-breaker.
What the Forever examples show

| Race and version | Active examples | Passive examples | Useful comparison question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orc, World of Warcraft: Forever (Blizzard, September 2026) | Blood Fury increases Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 seconds. Shatter Curse grants curse and bane immunity and reduces magical damage taken for 8 seconds. | Axe Specialization increases spell and ability critical chance by 1% while using axes. Hardiness reduces stun duration by 20%. | Would you use timed offensive or defensive effects, and does the weapon- or stun-related passive fit your play? |
| Undead, World of Warcraft: Forever (Blizzard, September 2026) | Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear, and Sleep. Cannibalize restores 35% of Health and Mana over time. | Underwater Breathing increases underwater breath duration by 300%. Touch of the Grave sometimes drains health with attacks. | Do you value a response to specific control effects, recovery, or situational exploration and attack effects? |
| Dwarf, World of Warcraft: Forever (Blizzard design recap) | Stoneform retains a focus on Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases and shifts its defensive bonus to Physical damage reduction. Find Treasure can operate alongside other tracking. | Mace Specialization increases critical strike chance with spells and abilities while using a mace. Big Game Hunter increases damage against Beasts. | Do the defensive and tracking functions matter to you, and do you use a mace or encounter Beasts? |
The Orc and Undead values above are ability values Blizzard published for Forever in 2026. Blizzard’s Dwarf recap describes redesign direction and situational effects; it does not establish that any one of these options is best in every activity. Blizzard also states that Forever aims for similar offensive power across races while preserving signature utility and identity. That is a design goal, not independent evidence that every race performs equally in every encounter.
A practical pick process
- Choose the game version. Decide whether you mean World of Warcraft: Forever or live Midnight; do not carry a Forever ability list across versions.
- Choose your class, if settled. Use the official race-class table for that version to filter out ineligible races.
- Sort the remaining traits by use. Mark each active and passive as damage, defense, control response, recovery, movement or exploration, or conditional utility where the official descriptions support that label.
- Check conditions and timing. Note weapon or target requirements, control effects, duration, and whether an active needs a deliberate trigger. Prefer effects you can realistically use to theoretical bonuses you are unlikely to trigger.
- Choose the character you want to spend time with. When the available utility is close for your purposes, story and appearance can settle the decision.
What is not established for live Midnight
The official sources cited here establish that Midnight launched in March 2026 and that Haranir were introduced as an allied race, but they do not establish a complete current Midnight racial-ability comparison or race-class matrix. Blizzard’s Troll page, in the material available here, provides lore and cosmetic information rather than detailed combat racials. Consequently, a live-game claim about the current “best” race or a full cross-race ranking would go beyond the evidence presented here.
