A new Uncharted could feel fresh without abandoning the series’ identity—but only if it gives players a meaningful new perspective on its characters and world, rather than relying on familiar spectacle alone. For now, that is a design test, not a confirmed description of a game: Naughty Dog has not officially announced a new Uncharted in the sources reviewed.
Has Naughty Dog announced a new Uncharted?
No. Naughty Dog’s official games page identifies Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as its next game, and the studio’s December 2024 announcement called it a new franchise in development for PS5. In a September 28, 2026 studio update, Naughty Dog said two very early-stage projects would expand The Last of Us canon and that Intergalactic would receive a full reveal in 2027; it did not identify either early project as Uncharted. The announcement and the update do not confirm a new Uncharted.
The current claim comes from reporting. GamesRadar reported on October 1, 2026, that MP1st, citing sources, had described an all-new Uncharted project—not a remake—allegedly led by Shaun Escayg, with Nathan Drake involved in some capacity. GamesRadar said leaker NateTheHate corroborated the Uncharted identification, but not a claimed release order involving The Last of Us Part III. Those details remain unconfirmed; the report does not establish Drake’s role, the project’s platform, or a release date. GamesRadar’s account is the source for the rumor, not an official reveal.
What would make a new Uncharted feel like a retread?
PlayStation describes Uncharted as cinematic action-adventure built around historical mysteries, travel through varied environments, elaborate action set pieces, treasure hunts, and formidable rivals. Those are the series’ recognizable pleasures. They are not, by themselves, a new reason to play.

A retread risk arises if those familiar ingredients return without changing what the player learns about the people involved, the place being explored, or the choices required to get through the adventure. Another chase or collapsing ruin might still be exciting, but spectacle repeated without a fresh character perspective, distinctive setting, or meaningful gameplay evolution can make a new entry feel like a replay of beats rather than a new chapter. This is a way to evaluate the rumor, not a claim about the unannounced project’s design.
Three tests for a genuinely new chapter
1. Does the protagonist offer a new perspective?
Uncharted has already shown that its lead need not be frozen in one version of the adventure. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End follows Nathan Drake after retirement, when his brother Sam’s return draws him back into exploration. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy instead puts Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross at the center of a journey through India’s Western Ghats. That range gives a new installment more options than simply repeating the same stage of Drake’s life. What matters is whether the chosen point of view has something new to reveal; no official premise says which character, if any, will lead the reported project.

2. Does the mystery make its setting matter?
Travel is part of Uncharted’s appeal, but a new location should be more than scenery between action sequences. A compelling historical mystery can make the setting shape the discoveries, obstacles, and stakes of the adventure. PlayStation’s description emphasizes globe-spanning environments and treasure hunting; the test for another entry is whether its particular place and mystery contribute a distinct context rather than merely supplying another picturesque backdrop. No setting or mystery has been confirmed for the rumored game.
3. Does the gameplay change the decisions, not just the spectacle?
Traversal, combat, puzzles, and set pieces can all return while still feeling purposeful if they ask players to engage differently. The question is not whether a new game includes a dramatic escape or a firefight; it is whether the way players move, fight, explore, and solve problems develops the series’ familiar rhythm instead of reproducing it on autopilot.

There is no official gameplay information to judge yet. A historical detail offers perspective, but not a forecast: in Naughty Dog’s Drake’s Fortune 15th-anniversary retrospective, studio president Evan Wells recalled, “It’s hard to believe how late in the development we decided to switch to a third-person aiming mechanic for the gunplay.” That recollection shows the original’s mechanics changed during development; it does not tell us what a future installment will do.
Would making a remake avoid the problem?
Not necessarily. A remake would revisit a story and its scenes; an all-new game, if the report is accurate, has the opportunity to add a chapter without rewriting an existing one. Former Uncharted designer Benson Russell, discussing a possible remake of Drake’s Fortune in a statement quoted by GamesRadar, said: “You’d have to rewrite the whole story to make it better which means you’re going to change the spirit and you’re going to change the scenes and what the first one was about, right?” That is Russell’s view about remaking the original—not a Naughty Dog position and not a comment on the rumored project. The rumor describes a new project rather than a remake, but being new in name or chronology would not automatically make it feel different. The three tests above—character perspective, a consequential setting and mystery, and gameplay that creates new decisions—are more useful than the label alone.

For a return to the series, PlayStation lists Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PS5. It bundles the single-player stories of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It is an existing collection, not the rumored new game.
