Your actual attempts depend on the raid’s lockout rules, and a rare appearance is not guaranteed gold. Build a route around eligible weekly kills, then judge its value by what sells on your realm—not by an item’s listing price.
What makes a WoW farm useful for transmog?
A useful route needs both a chance at desirable appearances and a practical way to repeat the content. For raids, the key distinction is whether the instance uses legacy loot or modern loot rules. Run friction matters too: travel, encounter mechanics, and whether the raid is comfortably soloable can make two theoretically eligible farms very different in practice.
- Loot eligibility: Legacy loot can draw from a boss’s full loot table; modern rules are more closely tied to specialization.
- Attempts: Difficulty lockouts differ by raid, and eligible characters generally have their own lockouts.
- Run friction: Travel and mechanics affect how many attempts fit into a session. No comparable route-time test is available here.
- Market uncertainty: A listed price is not proof that an item will sell. Buyer demand and sale time vary by realm.
Why old raids are the clearest place to start
According to Wowhead’s Legacy Raid Guide, raids from two or more expansions ago use legacy loot. In that system, bosses can drop items from their full loot tables regardless of your character’s class or specialization, making older raids a strong category for appearance farming.
That does not mean every raid that has just become legacy is effortless to solo. Some encounters may still have mechanics that require preparation or a group. Check the target raid’s current guidance and consider a test run before building a routine around it. Legacy status also changes as expansions release, so confirm that a raid still qualifies.

Plan attempts around the raid’s lockout
Do not assume every difficulty gives an independent weekly chance. Some older raids share a lockout across difficulties; some later raids allow loot from multiple difficulties or a separate LFR run. Newer raids generally allow one loot opportunity per difficulty each week. The specific instance determines what applies.
- Check the raid’s current lockout rules. Use the raid’s current entry in the Wowhead Legacy Raid Guide, then verify your character’s status in the in-game Raid Info panel.
- Choose only difficulties that offer an eligible loot opportunity. A reset or a difficulty change does not necessarily create another attempt.
- Use additional eligible characters if you want more attempts. Raid lockouts are generally character-specific, so characters in your Warband can run eligible raids independently.
- Track the weekly reset, not instance resets. Repeatedly resetting an instance does not clear its weekly loot lockout.
- Use a skip only when its setup is worthwhile. Some raids have skips that save clearing time, but unlocking or maintaining them can take several runs. Skip methods vary by raid; Wowhead’s guide references the K Raid Skip Tracker addon.
Collection does not mean every character can wear the item
Appearance collection is broad across characters, with exceptions, but collection and use are separate questions. Armor type, class, race, and weapon restrictions may limit who can apply an appearance. Because eligibility rules can change, check the live appearance collection UI and current patch information before farming specifically for a character’s usable outfit. Wowhead’s transmog guide covers the system and its restrictions.

Account for outfit costs while farming
The current outfit system lets you save styles to outfit slots, so changing an equipped armor item does not overwrite the look assigned to that slot. Blizzard says updating an outfit to a specific style costs gold, while switching between already unlocked outfits is free; outfits can also be placed on the action bar. See Blizzard’s updated transmog announcement.
Wowhead’s guide, updated January 20, 2026 and identifying Patch 12.1.0, lists two starting outfit slots and up to 50 purchasable slots. It gives 2,012,650 gold as the total cost to unlock all 50 and says purchases are account-wide. Those figures are patch-sensitive; check the current in-game cost before budgeting.

Measure gold by completed sales, not listing prices
A rare drop, an auction-house listing, and gold received from a sale are three different outcomes. There are no verified realm-level prices, sell-through rates, or comparable route tests available here, so a universal gold-per-hour figure would be misleading.
- Check your own realm’s current listings and whether similar items are actually moving.
- Record the time spent on eligible runs, not just the number of items looted.
- Track completed sales and unsold listings separately; asking prices alone do not establish demand.
- Include travel and any setup time for skips when deciding whether to keep a route.
A community question about farming classic greens asks, “what’s the most consistent way to farm them?” That is a useful way to frame the problem, but a July 2026 discussion is not evidence that one route is consistently profitable. Treat any route recommendation as a way to pursue appearances and attempts—not as a promised income stream.
