For a Wowza-to-YouTube stream, use a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), set rate control to CBR, and choose the bitrate using YouTube’s live-ingestion table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, preferably with RTMPS. The exact Wowza controls depend on whether you use Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine; the documented integration steps below are specifically for Wowza Video.
Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | YouTube-bound stream | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Wowza’s YouTube integration guidance gives the same limit. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set constant bitrate for the stream delivered to YouTube. |
| Video bitrate | Use YouTube’s live encoder table | Choose the row matching codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not substitute a Wowza source-encoder recommendation. |
| Protocol | RTMPS preferred; RTMP supported | Use the server URL and stream key generated in YouTube Studio. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Match the intended output | Confirm the selected Wowza output rendition and the corresponding YouTube bitrate-table row agree. |
YouTube’s guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Wowza’s YouTube Live integration guide.
Choose the right bitrate for YouTube
There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 stream. Select it according to the codec, resolution, and frame rate of the rendition Wowza sends to YouTube, using YouTube’s current live-ingestion table. A 1080p stream at one frame rate or codec may call for a different target than a 1080p stream at another. Check the relevant row in YouTube’s official bitrate table rather than relying on a generic “1080p bitrate.”
Do not confuse source bitrate with YouTube ingest bitrate
A Wowza workflow can have two encoding stages: a source entering Wowza, then a selected output rendition sent onward to YouTube. The bitrate of the source entering Wowza and the bitrate of the YouTube-bound rendition describe different streams. Set the YouTube-bound output to meet YouTube’s guidance; source encoding recommendations from Wowza are not a substitute.

For context, Wowza Technical Support lists a 3,200–6,000 Kbps supported range and 4,400 Kbps recommended video bitrate for 1080p in its source-encoder table. Wowza’s encoding best-practices page also gives 6,000 Kbps as an example maximum source video bitrate for 1080p. These are Wowza source-encoding references, not a universal YouTube ingest prescription. See Wowza’s recommended encoder bitrates and Wowza Video encoding best practices.
Set keyframes, rate control, and delivery protocol
Keyframe interval: 2 seconds
Configure a fixed 2-second interval wherever your encoder or Wowza output settings expose it. Do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds. This applies to the stream sent to YouTube; if the source entering Wowza has its own keyframe setting, check that separately rather than assuming it controls the output rendition.

Protocol and YouTube credentials
In YouTube Studio, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the live stream, then enter them in the relevant Wowza output destination. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or reuse a key you suspect has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and Wowza’s setup instructions for Wowza Video.

Configure Wowza Video to send a stream to YouTube
The documented integration below is for Wowza Video. Wowza Streaming Engine is a different product, so do not assume its interface or controls have the same names or behavior; verify the equivalent output configuration for your deployment.
- Prepare the YouTube live destination. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Open the Wowza Video stream setup. In Wowza Video, configure the YouTube destination using the URL and key from YouTube Studio, following the current Wowza Video integration guide.
- Select the output rendition. Decide which codec, resolution, and frame rate Wowza Video will send to YouTube. Use the matching row in YouTube’s bitrate table to select the output bitrate.
- Set the output encoding controls. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no interval above 4 seconds. Choose RTMPS where available.
- Check the connection and YouTube preview. Confirm the output is reaching YouTube and inspect its live preview and stream-health indicators before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Plan the 24/7 run behavior. Confirm the applicable Wowza Video setup and subscription can support the intended duration and output. Wowza’s documented 24×7 setup remains active until manually stopped or stopped by a schedule, and that described setup does not support 4K; these are Wowza Video-specific details, not a statement about every Wowza product or plan.
Wowza describes adaptive-bitrate output and passthrough as distinct configuration choices. Verify which applies to your stream and confirm the actual rendition delivered to YouTube; an input setting alone does not establish the output format. Consult the Wowza Video Live Stream Setup documentation for its 24×7 behavior and limits.

Check YouTube rights and channel rules before leaving a stream live
Technical compliance does not grant permission to broadcast the video or audio. Before scheduling a continuous stream, make sure you have the necessary rights to every included recording, music track, image, and other protected material. YouTube’s live-streaming policies and copyright enforcement can affect a broadcast even when its encoder settings are correct. For a gaming channel, check permissions for game footage and soundtrack use as well as any overlays or background audio; do not assume that owning or playing a game clears every music or third-party rights issue.
Also consider whether a looped or largely reused broadcast meets the channel’s applicable YouTube monetization and content policies. A 24/7 technical setup is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before running a long-term loop.

Troubleshoot common configuration problems
- YouTube reports a keyframe or encoder warning: Set the YouTube-bound output to a fixed 2-second keyframe interval and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds. Check the output rendition, not only the source entering Wowza.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports bitrate trouble: Verify that the configured output bitrate matches YouTube’s table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm CBR is enabled and that the connection can sustain the chosen output.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck that you copied the correct server URL and current stream key from YouTube Studio, that the destination uses a supported protocol, and that the key has not been regenerated or mistyped.
- The picture differs from the intended settings: Check whether Wowza is transcoding to an adaptive-bitrate rendition or passing through the source. Compare the actual YouTube-bound output’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with your intended values.
- A 4K 24/7 setup is unavailable in Wowza Video: The documented Wowza Video 24×7 setup does not support 4K. Check current documentation for the specific product and subscription before selecting a resolution; do not generalize this limitation to all Wowza offerings.
- The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check whether the channel was manually stopped or scheduled to stop, and review the applicable Wowza service configuration. The documented Wowza Video 24×7 channel continues until one of those stop conditions occurs.
