A stream marked active—or a picture in the preview—does not prove that an audio track is reaching viewers. The checks below distinguish Wowza Video, the cloud service, from Wowza Streaming Engine, separate software with different screens.
First, identify which Wowza product you use
The steps depend on whether your stream is configured in Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine. These products do not share the same workflow, so use the branch that matches your setup.
- Wowza Video: The YouTube Live external service or output is configured from the stream’s Components area. Check the Wowza preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview. In this documented workflow, YouTube performs transcoding. Wowza’s Wowza Video instructions describe the setup.
- Wowza Streaming Engine: A YouTube Live stream target is configured in the application, using an incoming source stream for delivery. That source must include audio; Wowza says an audio track can be added when the source encoder cannot provide one. Follow the separate Streaming Engine instructions.
If you are not sure which product you have, check the product name and the page where the YouTube output is configured before changing settings.
Find the stage where audio disappears
Check the available monitoring points in order and note where you can no longer hear sound. That first silent checkpoint narrows the fault; an active status alone is not enough to locate it.

- Source and encoder: Listen to the encoder’s output or a local recording. Confirm the intended microphone, mixer, game or desktop audio, or other source is selected, unmuted, and routed to the encoder. Review encoder errors and CPU load.
- Wowza input or preview: For Streaming Engine, inspect the incoming stream entry and its details. For Wowza Video, check the stream preview. Confirm audio is present before focusing on the YouTube target.
- YouTube preview and health: Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Listen to its preview and check the Health Indicator and timestamped stream-health errors.
- Viewer playback: If the Control Room preview has sound but a viewer does not, check whether the issue affects every viewer or just one device or playback setup. This points toward a playback-side problem rather than proving a failure at the source.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says that when the stream sounds and looks healthy in the encoder, an outbound connection may be the problem; it also recommends checking routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.
If the encoder output or local recording is silent
Work upstream first. A silent recording means the audio may never have entered the stream, so changing YouTube output settings is unlikely to fix the source.

- Select the intended audio input in the encoder and verify its level meter responds while sound is being produced.
- Check mute states and routing in the source application, operating system, mixer, and encoder. Game or desktop audio and microphone audio may be separate sources.
- Look for encoder warnings, disabled audio capture, excessive CPU load, or an error affecting the audio input.
- Listen to a local archive if available. If it is silent too, keep diagnosing the source and encoder before moving downstream.
Do not assume the problem requires a new microphone, interface, cable, or encoder: the symptom alone does not identify failed hardware.
If audio is missing at Wowza
Wowza Video
Compare the Wowza preview with the encoder output. If the encoder has sound but the Wowza preview does not, inspect the selected input and the stream’s configuration before changing the YouTube target. Use the Wowza Video workflow rather than looking for Streaming Engine Manager screens.

Wowza Streaming Engine
In the Streaming Engine application, open the relevant application’s incoming streams and select the source stream to inspect its details. Confirm that it is receiving audio and that its audio codec is compatible with the ingest protocol in use. Wowza supports different audio codecs depending on protocol, so do not assume one format applies to every source. The YouTube setup guide for Streaming Engine also notes that a video stream must include audio.
If the source encoder cannot provide audio, Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide describes adding an audio track to a video-only source. This is a workflow-specific option, not a general fix for every silent stream.

Only investigate MPEG-TS packet alignment when it applies
Wowza documents a specific missing-audio troubleshooting path for unaligned AAC audio packets in MPEG-TS. Use it only if the input is MPEG-TS and the symptoms or logs point to that issue; it is not a remedy to apply to RTMP, RTMPS, or a Wowza Video setup by default. Wowza also lists an “UNKNOWN” audio codec as a possible sign that the source has no audio, and identifies unsupported source codecs or disabled encode blocks as possible transcoding problems. Move downstream: confirm that the configured Wowza output targets the intended YouTube event, then inspect the YouTube preview and its exact health message. YouTube Live Control Room provides a preview and timestamped stream-health errors; use the message shown rather than changing unrelated settings.

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. It lists recommended audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are general encoder settings, not proof that a particular stream is configured that way. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings alongside the requirements of your actual workflow.
Read a specific ingestion error carefully. YouTube’s Live streaming error guidance says an ingestion stream must contain one audio stream, not no audio or multiple audio streams, and its guidance supports one or two audio channels. For the “Incorrect stream format” warning, YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Follow the error displayed in your Live Control Room; a specific error can impose a more targeted check than general encoder recommendations. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
If only some viewers hear no sound
Compare the YouTube Control Room preview with playback on another device or browser. If the preview and other viewers have audio, check the affected viewer’s player mute and volume, device output selection, and browser or app playback. If all viewers are silent, return to the first upstream checkpoint where audio is missing rather than treating one viewer’s playback as proof the stream itself is silent.
Test the fix before the event
- Make a short private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- Listen to the source or encoder output and, if available, a local recording.
- Check the Wowza preview or Streaming Engine incoming-stream details.
- Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview and review the Health Indicator and any timestamped errors.
- Confirm that audio remains present during the test, not only at the moment it starts.
