If Windows says writedvd.dll is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the affected optical-disc application from its original installer rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
The file is known internally as WriteDVD Library and is developed by Elaborate Bytes AG. It provides DVD-writing functionality for compatible Elaborate Bytes software.
It is not a Windows system DLL. It does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and Windows Update does not normally restore it. It is also not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET component.
The parent application normally loads its own copy from the application folder. Depending on the product and release, that may be CloneDVD, CloneCD, CloneDVDmobile, or an OEM or rebranded package based on the same software.
#1 Best Overall
- 【PLUG & PLAY – EASY CONNECTION】 Simply connect the Amicool External DVD Drive to your computer’s USB or Type-C port, and it will usually be detected right away without the need for extra drivers. For stable operation and sufficient power, we recommend connecting it directly to a USB port on your computer (for desktops, use a rear motherboard port) and avoiding USB hubs or extension cables. This user-friendly design ensures quick setup for both beginners and professionals.
- 【FAST & STABLE DATA TRANSMISSION】 Featuring dual interfaces (USB 3.0 and Type-C), this optical drive supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. To ensure a reliable connection, please connect it directly to your computer. The drive supports multiple disc formats such as DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Please note: It does NOT support DVD-RAM, Blu-ray (BD) discs, or certain proprietary formats. Maximum DVD read speed is 8x, and maximum CD read/write speed is 24x.
- 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.
- 【SLIM & PORTABLE DESIGN – BUILT-IN CABLE, READY TO GO】With an integrated cable design, slim body, and stylish matte finish, this lightweight CD/DVD drive is both durable and portable. Easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack and use it anytime, anywhere—perfect for business, travel, or home use
- 【MULTIFUNCTIONAL & RELIABLE OPERATION】 Equipped with intelligent error correction and anti-shock technology, this drive supports reading, writing, and burning discs. If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Public file records disagree about whether particular copies are 32-bit or labeled x64. Treat the copy supplied with the application as authoritative. Do not choose a replacement based only on the bitness of Windows.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when CloneDVD starts | The application was incompletely installed or the DLL was removed | Repair or reinstall CloneDVD |
| The message began after antivirus activity | writedvd.dll was quarantined |
Review protection history, then reinstall from a trusted installer |
| The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency is missing or blocked | Reinstall the complete application and inspect security events |
| The error began after copying a DLL from the internet | Wrong build, architecture, or dependency | Remove the copied file and reinstall the parent application |
| The application opens but DVD writing fails | Optical-drive, permission, firmware, or ElbyCDIO driver issue | Troubleshoot the drive separately |
| Several Windows components also fail | Possible broader Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Only an old CloneCD or CloneDVDmobile installation fails | Compatibility or discontinued-product issue | Use the original installer and vendor licensing records |
Fix 1: Identify the application that needs the file
Do not start by searching for the filename online. First determine which program is displaying the message.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. Look for a program name such as:
- CloneDVD
- CloneCD
- CloneDVDmobile
- A manufacturer’s media-burning utility
- An installer, launcher, or shortcut associated with one of those products
If the message appears immediately after double-clicking a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path. The folder containing the target executable is usually the application directory that should contain its matching DLL.

Check installed applications
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for
CloneDVD,CloneCD,CloneDVDmobile, or the name shown in the error. - Select the program’s three-dot menu, if present.
- Look for Modify, Repair, or Uninstall.
If Windows lists no matching program, check the desktop, Start menu, old installation media, installer archives, and the shortcut target. An OEM or rebranded copy may not use the original product name.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or isolate an old application DLL. This is particularly important if the problem began after a scan, cleanup operation, update, restore, or disk-space cleanup.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for
writedvd.dll, the affected application, or its installation folder. - Open a matching event and record the detection name and file path.
- If the installer and application are known-good, use the available Restore or Allow on device action only after confirming the event belongs to that program.
Do not turn off antivirus protection merely to copy a DLL downloaded from an unknown site. If security software repeatedly removes the file, obtain a current installer from the software publisher or contact the publisher before restoring anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter restoring a quarantined file, launch the application. If it starts but writing still fails, reinstall the application instead of continuing to restore individual files.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most reliable repair for a genuine missing or damaged writedvd.dll.
Try Windows application repair first
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected Elaborate Bytes application.
- Select its menu and choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- Select Repair if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no repair option, use the application’s own installer. Download the current supported package from the official Elaborate Bytes download route, or use the original installer media for an older product.
Reinstall cleanly
- Back up any application settings, project files, or license information that the program stores separately.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Check that the old application directory is no longer being used. Do not delete personal data without confirming what it contains.
- Run the original installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Install the program into its normal application folder.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
- Launch the program before copying any other DLL files into its directory.
For CloneDVD, use the newest supported release available from Elaborate Bytes. The product has received compatibility-related changes over time, including changes to its optical-drive component. CloneCD and CloneDVDmobile may be older or discontinued in comparison, so use an installer and license source you can verify rather than substituting a CloneDVD file.

If the program opens but cannot detect or write to a disc, the DLL problem is no longer the main issue.
Fix 4: Remove a manually copied DLL
If you already downloaded writedvd.dll and placed it somewhere, undo that change before reinstalling the application.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the target folder.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for the manually copied
writedvd.dll. - If you can identify it as the replacement you added, move it to a temporary backup folder outside the application directory rather than deleting it immediately.
- Run the application’s repair or reinstall process.
- Launch the program again.
Never replace a file in System32 or SysWOW64 to solve this application-specific error. A wrong copy can produce new messages such as “entry point not found,” “bad image,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
Downloading this file from random DLL websites is risky because the copy may contain malware, belong to another application release, use the wrong architecture, or still lack the dependency that Windows actually needs. The safe source is the original Elaborate Bytes installer, trusted original media, or a verified launcher repair function.

Fix 5: Understand “specified module could not be found”
The message:
Error loading writedvd.dll. The specified module could not be found.
does not always mean that writedvd.dll itself is absent. Windows can display this wording when the named DLL exists but one of its dependent files cannot be loaded.

Suitable for multiple scenarios including home entertainment, office file processing, campus study and outdoor business travel.
Possible reasons include:
- A supporting application file was deleted.
- Antivirus software blocked a dependency.
- The DLL is from a different release.
- The application and DLL do not match.
- The application cannot access its installation directory.
- An old optical-drive component is incompatible with the current Windows installation.
The safest diagnostic sequence is:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
writedvd.dllis present there. - Check Windows Security protection history.
- Run the application’s repair option.
- Reinstall the complete application if repair does not help.
- Test with the application’s original files before adding drivers or runtimes.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will fix this filename. Those packages are relevant only if a separate diagnostic identifies one of them as the missing dependency.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can load its application-local DLLs on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the DLL should be copied into SysWOW64, and it does not mean a file labeled x64 by a third-party inventory is suitable for every installation.
Use the application’s own installer to obtain the matching file.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
To check the application’s architecture, open the publisher’s documentation or installer information. Do not infer it from the folder name alone. The presence of Program Files (x86) indicates a common 32-bit installation location, but it is not a substitute for the vendor’s package information.
If a manually replaced DLL caused the problem, remove it and reinstall the application. File size, version text, and a filename match do not prove compatibility.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall optical-drive software and drivers
If the program opens normally but fails when detecting or writing discs, investigate the drive and its supporting components instead of continuing to replace writedvd.dll.
Check the drive in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Check whether the optical drive appears.
- Right-click the drive and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- On the Driver tab, select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the drive is missing or has a warning icon, also check Universal Serial Bus controllers and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, depending on the hardware. A drive-detection problem is separate from a missing application DLL.
Use the computer or drive manufacturer’s official driver and firmware instructions where applicable. Do not install a generic driver package from an unverified source.
Hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer pages can be tedious when several drivers are old or mismatched. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies the results, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the affected optical-disc application remains the definitive fix when writedvd.dll itself is missing.
Fix 8: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows problems
Because writedvd.dll is an application-private file, System File Checker is not expected to restore it. Use these commands when Windows itself has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in components, failed updates, or multiple unrelated applications reporting system-file errors.

Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run SFC second
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the application again.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, save the result and return to the application repair path. These commands do not replace a missing third-party writedvd.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely helps an application-specific failure. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair through the full version is optional. For this file, reinstalling the Elaborate Bytes application remains the definitive repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Consider System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a driver update, cleanup operation, software removal, or other major system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Finish only if you accept the listed changes.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the application and may not restore application-private files. If it does not resolve the error, repair or reinstall the parent program.

Should you register writedvd.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer or DllInstall, commonly used by COM components and ActiveX controls. writedvd.dll is documented as an application library for DVD-writing functions, not as a self-registering component.
Do not use this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 writedvd.dll
It may return errors such as “module failed to load” or “entry point not found.” Those messages do not prove that the file is bad. The application installer should place and initialize its own library.
When the error says “not designed to run on Windows”
This wording is a generic Windows loader error. It can result from a damaged file, an incompatible build, a wrong architecture, or a missing dependency. Do not treat it as proof that every copy of writedvd.dll is incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Remove any manually copied replacement and reinstall the matching application package. If the newest supported application release still fails, record the exact message and contact the publisher or the software distributor.
Recommended Free Tools
What to collect if reinstalling does not work
Before seeking further help, record:
- The exact application name.
- The application version shown in its Help or About menu.
- Whether it is CloneDVD, CloneCD, CloneDVDmobile, or an OEM copy.
- The full path where
writedvd.dllis expected. - The complete error text.
- Whether the file exists in that folder.
- The Windows version and system type.
- The date the problem began.
- Whether it followed an uninstall, update, restore, cleanup, or antivirus event.
- Any protection-history detection involving the application.
- The result of the application’s repair or reinstall attempt.
- Whether the application opens but fails only during DVD writing.
If the DLL exists and every reinstall produces the same loader error, the next step is dependency analysis or vendor support. Repeatedly downloading replacement DLLs obscures the cause and can make the installation less trustworthy.
FAQ
Is writedvd.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an Elaborate Bytes CDRTools application component and should normally remain in the folder belonging to the program that installed it.

Which programs use writedvd.dll?
It has been associated with CloneDVD, CloneCD, CloneDVDmobile, and related Elaborate Bytes or SlySoft-era products. The exact program depends on the installation.
Is WriteDVD.dll the same as writedvd.dll?
Windows filenames are generally not case-sensitive, so capitalization alone does not make a different file. The important details are the file’s contents, build, architecture, dependencies, and the application release it came with.
Can I download the file separately?
That is not the safe repair path. A separate download may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete. Restore it through the original application installer instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The application should load its own copy from its installation directory. Copying it to a Windows system directory can create conflicts and does not repair the parent program.
Do I need to install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not merely because writedvd.dll is named in the error. Install a runtime only when a separate diagnostic identifies that runtime as the missing dependency.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing or blocked. Reinstall the complete application, check antivirus history, and avoid mixing files from different releases.
Will SFC restore the file?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It is not designed to restore arbitrary third-party application DLLs.
Is regsvr32 required?
Usually not. writedvd.dll is an application library, not a DLL known to require COM registration. Use the application installer.
What if CloneDVD starts but cannot write a disc?
Check the optical drive, permissions, firmware, application compatibility, and the program’s supporting optical-drive driver. That is a different problem from a missing writedvd.dll.
