Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your situation:
- The error appeared after an update, cleanup, disk problem, or unexplained shutdown: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.
- Bluetooth has also disappeared, stopped pairing, or shows a warning in Device Manager: update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver after repairing Windows.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that program and use its launcher’s Verify files or Repair option if available.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists, but the program still fails: check its path, architecture, dependencies, and recent system changes. A “missing DLL” message does not always mean the named file is physically absent.
- SFC cannot repair the file or Windows has broader failures: rerun DISM, inspect the CBS log, try System Restore, or use a Windows repair reinstall.
- The file is in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an application directory: treat that copy as suspicious and investigate for malware rather than copying it into a Windows folder.
What is wshbth.dll
wshbth.dll is Microsoft’s Windows Sockets Helper DLL, also known internally as WshBth. It ships as part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, not as a normal application library.
Microsoft documents WshBth as part of the Windows Bluetooth driver stack. The Windows Sockets layer calls it for Bluetooth socket operations, and it helps connect Winsock with Bluetooth RFCOMM communication and the Bluetooth service and radio stack. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth driver stack documentation.
That role explains why a program can report wshbth.dll even when the program is not itself a Bluetooth utility. An application may use Windows networking or Bluetooth functionality indirectly, and the Windows loader can fail when a protected component or one of its dependencies is damaged.

This file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX runtime file
- A .NET runtime file
- A game-specific DLL by default
- A file that should normally be downloaded separately
- A library that should routinely be registered with
regsvr32
It is normally located under %SystemRoot%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use the corresponding 32-bit system copy under %SystemRoot%SysWOW64 through Windows-on-Windows 64, or WOW64, redirection. Microsoft explains this separation in its documentation for the file-system redirector.
Why old references show Windows XP versions
Some file databases and old troubleshooting pages show 32-bit Windows XP versions such as 5.1.2600.5512 and 5.1.2600.2180. Those are historical version references, not universal versions for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Windows system files can differ by Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and update branch. A Windows 8 file inventory, for instance, reports a different WshBth build and size. Do not use an old XP version as a target for a modern installation, and do not replace a current Windows file with one taken from another release.
What the error message really means
Several messages can point to the same underlying problem:
- “The program can’t start because wshbth.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “wshbth.dll was not found.”
- “wshbth.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly because wshbth.dll was not found.”
- “wshbth.dll is corrupted.”
- “wshbth.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording is useful, but it does not prove that the file itself is missing. The loader may be reporting:
- A deleted or corrupted copy of
wshbth.dll - A missing dependency needed by the DLL
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch
- A damaged Windows component store
- A bad application installation
- A file in the wrong directory
- A modified or malicious replacement
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” verify the file path and digital signature before attempting repairs. A copy outside the normal Windows directories deserves additional scrutiny.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components inconsistent. Install updates before running the repair commands.
- Save your work and close applications.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update. On Windows 10, it may be under Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the application that reported
wshbth.dll.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that a successful update check means the component store is healthy.
Windows 11 may also provide Fix problems using Windows Update. If it is visible, open Settings > System > Recovery, locate that option, and select Reinstall now. Microsoft describes this as a way to reinstall the current version of Windows while repairing system components. Use it only after saving work and reviewing the on-screen information.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair sequence for a missing or damaged Windows component. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
TerminalorCommand Prompt. - Right-click Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- When DISM completes, leave the administrator window open.
DISM repairs the running Windows installation by using Windows servicing resources. If it reports that the restore operation completed successfully, proceed to SFC. If it reports that the source files could not be found, install pending updates and rerun the command. Persistent source errors may require Windows installation media or a repair reinstall.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Recommended Free Tools
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. If the error remains, investigate the application, dependencies, architecture, or driver.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: rerun DISM, restart, and run SFC again. If it still cannot repair the file, use the escalation steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and try again from an administrator terminal.
Restart after SFC, even when it reports repairs. Then launch the program again and check whether the original error has disappeared.
SFC records details in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. To inspect the relevant entries without reading the entire log, open an administrator Command Prompt and run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%DesktopSFCDetails.txt"
Open SFCDetails.txt from the desktop and look for entries involving wshbth.dll, related Bluetooth components, or files SFC could not repair.
Manually hunting through component versions and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the standard first repair path.
Fix 3: Check the file location and architecture
Do not immediately copy a DLL into a folder. First determine whether Windows has the expected file and whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Check the normal Windows locations
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- In the address bar, enter:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Search for
wshbth.dll. - On a 64-bit Windows installation, also check:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
The names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files used by 32-bit applications. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64.
If the file is present in the correct Windows directory but the application still fails, the problem may be a dependency, application-side loader issue, damaged system registration data, or an architecture mismatch. DISM and SFC are safer than manual replacement.

Check the failing program’s architecture
A 32-bit application may access the 32-bit Windows copy through WOW64 redirection. A 64-bit application normally loads the native copy. If only one older application fails while other programs work, the application may be loading from an unexpected location or may have its own damaged dependencies.
Do not treat the presence of a file in one directory as proof that every application can use it. Record:
- The exact program name
- Its installation path
- Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known
- The full error text
- The path of any
wshbth.dllcopy found - Whether Bluetooth itself works
This information helps distinguish Windows corruption from an application-specific failure.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver
A Bluetooth driver problem is more likely when the error appears with pairing failures, a missing Bluetooth radio, dropped connections, or a warning icon in Device Manager. Driver repair may resolve related Bluetooth failures, but it is not guaranteed to restore a missing Windows DLL.
Update the driver through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter. It may include the computer manufacturer or adapter vendor name.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test Bluetooth and the affected program.
If Windows does not find a driver, visit the computer manufacturer’s official support page from another device if necessary. Search by the exact computer model and Windows version, then install the manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download pages.
Reinstall the adapter
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Review the prompt carefully. Do not remove unrelated devices.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to detect and reinstall the adapter.
- If it does not return, install the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
If the Bluetooth category is missing, check Network adapters and Other devices for an unidentified device or warning icon. A disabled radio, hardware switch, firmware issue, or missing chipset driver may prevent the adapter from appearing normally.
Driver catalogs can contain many similar packages, and choosing the wrong one can create another problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source when you know the exact model.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application or game
If Bluetooth and other Windows programs work normally and only one application reports wshbth.dll, the application installation may be damaged or its loader may be reporting a dependency problem.
Use the application’s own repair method first:
- Open the program’s launcher.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher.
- Test the program again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Restart Windows, then reinstall the application from its official source.

Do not place wshbth.dll in the game’s folder as a workaround. That can hide the actual issue, create an architecture mismatch, or introduce an altered file. If the application is old, verify that it supports the installed Windows release and that its own prerequisites are installed from the application vendor. Reinstalling the specific program remains the definitive application-level fix when its files are damaged.

Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or suspected modification. Do not restore a quarantined item automatically.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any item that references
wshbth.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Confirm whether the path is a normal Windows directory and whether the file is a Microsoft-signed system component.
- Run a full scan before deciding whether to restore anything.
Microsoft explains the available actions in its Protection History guidance. Restore or allow a file only after confirming that the item is safe and the machine is not compromised. If the file was found in Downloads, a temporary directory, or an application folder, do not assume it is the genuine Windows copy.
If malware removal preceded the error, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If you suspect an active compromise, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
There is no official standalone Microsoft wshbth.dll redistributable download. The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, the Windows component store, or Windows installation media.
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong architecture
- A file with an invalid or missing signature
- A copy that does not include its dependencies
- A temporary workaround that leaves Windows servicing damaged
Manual copying also makes it difficult to know whether the loader is using the correct System32 or SysWOW64 copy. It can create a second, harder-to-diagnose problem.
Why regsvr32 is generally wrong
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 wshbth.dll
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains that not every DLL supports those entry points.
wshbth.dll is a Windows Sockets and Bluetooth stack component, not an ordinary COM or ActiveX library that should be registered manually. If it does not expose the required entry point, regsvr32 will report that DllRegisterServer was not found. That error does not indicate that the file needs to be downloaded or registered.

Fix 7: Escalate when SFC cannot repair the file
If DISM and SFC do not restore the component:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the DISM command again from an administrator Terminal:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor unrepaired entries. - Test whether the issue affects more than one application.
- Check Event Viewer for errors at the same time the program fails.
If the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, or system change, use System Restore if restore points are available:

- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
Microsoft states that System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files.
For persistent component corruption, use Windows 11’s Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now when available. If that option is unavailable or ineffective, an in-place repair using Windows installation media may be justified. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance, back up important data first, and choose the repair path that preserves personal files and applications when offered.

FAQ
Is wshbth.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows operating-system component used by the Bluetooth Winsock stack. Safety depends on the file’s location, signature, and integrity. A file with the same name outside the normal Windows directories should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Is wshbth.dll optional?
It is not an ordinary optional application component. It belongs to Windows Bluetooth and Winsock functionality. Do not remove it or disable it to resolve an application error.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Normally, no. wshbth.dll is a Windows Bluetooth component, not a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime file. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first, then investigate an application-specific dependency if the error continues.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does a 32-bit program mention SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 redirects 32-bit applications to the 32-bit system-file area, normally SysWOW64. Native 64-bit components are normally in System32. The names are historical and counterintuitive, so do not copy files between these folders.
What if the file is present but the program still will not start?
Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, whether the file is in the normal Windows directory, and whether another dependency is missing. Run DISM and SFC, repair the application, and review Event Viewer rather than replacing the visible DLL manually.
Can I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after confirming the path, Microsoft signature, and system health. If the item came from an application folder or temporary location, treat it as potentially malicious and scan the system first.
What is the most likely repair?
For a genuine Windows component error, DISM followed by SFC is the safest first repair. If Bluetooth hardware symptoms accompany the error, repair the Windows component first and then update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver.
