Repair Windows servicing with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC before considering a modem-driver repair or recovery option.
What this file actually does
Wireless WAN means Wireless Wide Area Network, which is Windows’ name for cellular or mobile-broadband networking. It can involve an internal laptop modem, a USB cellular modem, or another WWAN device connected through a mobile operator.
wwanhc.dll belongs to that Windows mobile-broadband platform. It works alongside Windows components such as wwapi.dll, WWanAPI.dll, wwanconn.dll, and the WWAN AutoConfig service. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary third-party application dependency. Microsoft describes the related architecture in its Mobile Broadband overview and Mobile Broadband API documentation.

Those names can be confusing: System32 generally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system files. Do not move a file between these folders merely because the error names a DLL. Microsoft explains this separation in its file-system redirector documentation.
What the symptoms usually mean

The exact wording varies between Windows versions. Also, an application or game can be the process that displays the error without being the source of the problem. There is no reliably documented application that universally causes this error.
Before repairing anything, verify the file
These checks help distinguish a missing Windows component from a wrong or untrusted copy.
1. Check the expected locations
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32and press Enter. - Search for
wwanhc.dll. - If you use 64-bit Windows and the problem affects a 32-bit program, also check
%WINDIR%SysWOW64.
If the file is absent from the appropriate Windows directory, do not download a replacement from a random DLL site. Continue with the repair steps below.
If a copy appears in an application folder, Downloads, a temporary folder, or another unexpected location, do not replace the system copy with it. Windows can search application directories before system directories, allowing an untrusted DLL to be loaded.
2. Check the digital signature
- Right-click the copy in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature, if present, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
A valid Microsoft signature supports the file’s authenticity, but it does not prove that the file belongs in every folder where it was found. An unsigned copy outside the Windows directory deserves extra caution.
3. Check file details without treating them as a repair target
On the Details tab, review the description and company information. A genuine Windows inventory identifies the component as Wireless WAN Helper Class and associates it with Microsoft Windows. File versions and sizes can vary by Windows release and architecture, so do not use an old inventory value as a reason to substitute a DLL manually.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update can leave protected system components in an inconsistent state.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the program or feature that produced the error.
If the error began directly after an update and installing the latest updates does not help, proceed to the recovery options later in this guide rather than installing an older DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted wwanhc.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Keep the window open if progress pauses for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application or cellular connection.
DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. If Windows Update itself is unusable, Microsoft documents using an alternate repair source, but the source must match the installed Windows environment. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary downloaded DLL.
If SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, Windows did not detect a protected-file mismatch. If it repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, continue to the escalation steps rather than copying wwanhc.dll manually.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a protected file after a false positive or after detecting a modified copy.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
wwanhc.dll.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

- The path is the normal Windows system directory.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- You have reason to believe the detection was a false positive.
If the item is unsigned, stored outside the Windows directory, or otherwise suspicious, leave it quarantined. Run a full scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft explains how Protection history records these actions.

A modem or WWAN driver is relevant when cellular networking has disappeared, Device Manager shows an error, or the issue began immediately after a driver change. The driver package is supplied by the PC or modem manufacturer; it is separate from the Windows wwanhc.dll component.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a cellular modem, Mobile Broadband adapter, WWAN adapter, or an item with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver if an approved driver is available through Windows.
- If the problem began after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Otherwise, download the exact Windows driver from your PC or modem manufacturer’s official support page.
- In Device Manager, choose Uninstall device only when the manufacturer’s instructions support it.
- Restart Windows, then return to Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Do not use a modem driver to replace wwanhc.dll. The driver can fix the hardware side of the WWAN connection, while DISM and SFC repair the Windows component.
Manually identifying the correct modem driver can involve several similarly named packages and architecture choices. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies outdated drivers; installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional. For a known WWAN device, the manufacturer’s exact driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 5: Check services and Windows Features
The WWAN platform is not normally repaired by enabling a random Windows optional feature. Installing or removing unrelated Windows Features will not recreate a missing system DLL.
You can still check whether the related service is running:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find WWAN AutoConfig.
- Open it and review Service status and Startup type.
- If it is stopped, select Start.
- If it is disabled, change the startup type to Manual or Automatic, select Apply, and then select Start.
If the service cannot start, or it starts but the DLL error remains, return to DISM and SFC. A service setting cannot repair a corrupted Windows binary.
Fix 6: Review recent updates and use System Restore
Use this branch when the failure clearly began after an update or system change.

Remove a recent update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the recent update associated with the problem.
- Choose Uninstall, if Windows allows it.
- Restart and test again.
Windows Recovery Environment also provides Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates when normal Windows cannot start correctly. Microsoft’s recovery options describe the available paths.
Use System Restore
System Restore is appropriate when a restore point predates the failure.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It does not normally remove ordinary personal documents and photos.

On Windows 11, some installations provide a supported repair-reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while aiming to preserve apps, files, and settings where the option is available. If the option is missing or the repair fails, use matching Windows installation media and choose a repair or in-place installation path carefully. Back up important files first. What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
A random replacement can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create DLL search-order and hijacking risks.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows servicing, Windows recovery tools, and the official support page for the affected PC or modem. There is no verified Microsoft wwanhc.dll redistributable download.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public inspection of wwanhc.dll shows exports associated with class-object handling, but no evidence that users should manually register it to fix a missing-file error.
Running:
regsvr32 wwanhc.dll
may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. It does not restore a deleted file or repair its dependencies. Microsoft documents regsvr32 and self-registration requirements.

Record these details before seeking further help:
- The exact error wording.
- The application or Windows feature that displays it.
- The full path named in the error, if one is shown.
- Whether
wwanhc.dllexists inSystem32orSysWOW64. - The result of DISM and SFC.
- The file’s digital-signature result.
- Any recent update, antivirus quarantine event, cleanup tool, or driver change.
- The WWAN device status in Device Manager.
- Relevant errors in Event Viewer.
A persistent error after DISM, SFC, and Windows repair may indicate a damaged dependency, an architecture mismatch, a failing WWAN driver or firmware package, or an untrusted copy being loaded from another directory. Repair the Windows component first, then investigate the specific caller and device rather than replacing the DLL blindly.
FAQ
Is wwanhc.dll safe?
Yes, when it is the Microsoft-signed Windows component in the expected Windows system directory. A copy in an application folder or with an invalid signature should be treated as suspicious until verified.
Is it a game or application file?
No. It is part of Windows’ Wireless WAN platform. A game or application may be the process that reveals the problem, but that does not make the program the owner of the system DLL.
Is Wireless WAN the same as Wi-Fi?
No. Wireless WAN refers primarily to cellular or mobile-broadband hardware, such as an internal modem or USB modem. Wi-Fi uses a different networking path.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency required by wwanhc.dll. Repairing the component store with DISM and SFC is safer than replacing the visible file.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the normal response to this filename. wwanhc.dll is identified as a Windows Wireless WAN component, not as one of those runtime packages.
When is a modem-driver reinstall appropriate?
Use it when Device Manager reports a WWAN problem, the cellular modem disappears, or the error follows a modem-driver or firmware update. It does not replace Windows servicing.
What is the safest first repair?
