What did reviewers like about WWE 2K19?
More substantial modes and a story-led MyCareer
Reviewers found plenty to do beyond standard matches. The publisher announced the return of Showcase, built around Daniel Bryan, along with a revamped MyCareer, Towers challenges, creation features, and Universe updates. These are product features, not proof that every mode will suit every player.

MyCareer follows a created wrestler starting on the independent scene and trying to reach WWE. GameSpot’s Richard Wakeling praised its authored, voice-acted story as a major improvement. The publisher described the mode as containing more than 1,000 lines of voiceover from 26 WWE Superstars across 200 cut scenes, and estimated approximately 12 hours of playtime; those are publisher figures, not independently timed results. 2K’s launch announcement details the mode and other features.
A broad roster and challenge options
2K announced more than 200 playable characters and 20 Towers. The large roster and range of modes were recurring positives in contemporary coverage, although the roster count is the publisher’s figure. Towers offer a set of challenges, while Showcase provides a more focused, Daniel Bryan-centered route through matches and story moments.

Universe as a booking sandbox
Universe is for players who want to shape a wrestling promotion rather than simply play through matches. The official manual describes booking matches, assigning Superstars to shows and pay-per-views, creating rivalries and alliances, and using promos and run-ins. That combination makes it the most flexible choice for players who enjoy managing feuds and cards. The WWE 2K19 PC manual explains its available tools.
What were the main criticisms?
The core combat remained familiar
GameSpot’s Wakeling said the central system of strikes, grapples, and reversals had changed relatively little. He wrote: “Some minor quality of life refinements improve upon the in-ring action in a couple of specific match types, but beyond this the core system of strikes, grapples, and reversals has remained relatively unchanged.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, but it captures an important distinction: more content and mode improvements do not necessarily mean a substantially new combat system.

MyCareer progression and customization concerns
Wakeling also criticized slow character progression and customization options limited early on by loot boxes. He noted the absence of a women’s career mode. The reviews point to a stronger fit for players who want a sizable roster, multiple modes, character creation, booking tools, and a structured career story. It is a less obvious choice for someone whose main reason to play is to get a newly reworked wrestling control system: GameSpot found the fundamental strikes, grapples, and reversals familiar.
