wzeay32.dll is a third-party application DLL associated with WinZip, not a Windows system file. If wzeay32.dll is missing or was not found, repair or reinstall the program that reports the error instead of copying a downloaded DLL into System32.
The file is publicly identified as “WinZip Openssl DLL” and is associated with WinZip Computing, S.L. A commonly indexed copy is 32-bit, but that describes a historical copy rather than every WinZip release. Another program may also report the error if it bundled or retained an old WinZip component.
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs wzeay32.dll
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
Start with the complete error message. The title bar, surrounding text, and executable name tell you which application should be repaired.
Look for messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wzeay32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wzeay32.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting wzeay32.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: WZEAY32.dll.”
These messages are commonly indexed for this filename, but they do not prove that WinZip itself displayed the message. Record the application name shown in the error, shortcut, launcher, or Task Manager.

Then check the file location:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the application folder for
wzeay32.dll.
A legitimate copy should normally be beside the owning program or inside its application package. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, Temp, a random user-profile folder, or an unrelated game directory needs additional scrutiny.
Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s own directory before system directories. That is why restoring the file through the original installer is safer than placing a replacement in a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the owning program
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution.
If WinZip is named in the error
- Save any open archives and close WinZip.
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find WinZip.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on the options shown.
- If a repair option exists, run it and restart Windows.
- If repair is unavailable or does not work, uninstall WinZip.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current WinZip installer from WinZip’s official support or download flow.
- Install it, then launch WinZip again.
Keep registration information and settings available before uninstalling if the program requires them.
If another application is named
Use that application’s own repair process first:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not resolve the error, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Restart and test the application.
For a game launcher, look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar command. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.

What success looks like: the application opens without the DLL error, and the restored file appears in the application’s own directory.
If it fails: do not copy another DLL over the top. Continue with the quarantine and architecture checks below.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software, cleanup utilities, or an incomplete update may have removed the file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that references
wzeay32.dll. - Check the detected path, threat name, publisher, and available signature information.
If the file was removed from a genuine WinZip or application directory, reinstall the owning application instead of restoring an isolated copy. The installer can put back the correct build and any related dependencies.
Do not disable antivirus globally. Do not allow the file merely because its name looks familiar. If the file is in an unexpected directory, has no trustworthy publisher information, or the application itself was not intentionally installed, scan the system and remove the suspicious program.
What success looks like: reinstalling the verified application restores the file, and Protection History no longer removes the replacement.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A commonly indexed wzeay32.dll is 32-bit. That does not mean every release uses the same version or that a 32-bit DLL belongs in every installation.

Check the application architecture where the publisher provides that information. A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit components, even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit substitute cannot replace a required 32-bit DLL.
Also, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. It can mean that wzeay32.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load.

Use this order:
- Confirm whether
wzeay32.dllexists in the application directory. - Check the application’s installer or documentation for required runtimes.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application specifically requires it or dependency analysis identifies it.
- Match the package architecture to the application. Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages.
Do not install every Visual C++ package blindly. There is no evidence that wzeay32.dll itself is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.
Fix 5: Verify the file’s signature and path
Time needed: 5 minutes
If a copy is present but Windows reports that it is invalid, inspect it before running the program.

- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Note the file’s full path and the signer.
A valid signature associated with the expected application is reassuring, but the absence of a signature alone does not prove malware. A file in a random folder, paired with an unfamiliar executable, or removed repeatedly by antivirus should not be restored manually.
The public metadata for this filename includes a description of “WinZip Openssl DLL,” but historical metadata is not a universal identification certificate for every file carrying the same name.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other apps also fail
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use this step when several unrelated applications fail, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or Windows itself shows signs of corruption. It will not normally recreate a private WinZip DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns wzeay32.dll.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC or DISM can make it difficult to know what changed. Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A driver is not the normal owner of wzeay32.dll. Do this only if the application error began after a hardware change, the application depends on a specific device, or Device Manager shows a related warning.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Otherwise, download the driver only from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and several package architectures. Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible historical build, or a file that does not include the missing dependency. Even a clean replacement may fail because the owning application is damaged.
Use the original WinZip installer, the affected application’s official installer, or its launcher verification feature.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
wzeay32.dll is an application DLL, not an identified Windows component. Copying it into a system directory can leave Windows loading the wrong copy and does not repair the application’s installation.
Do not run Regsvr32
regsvr32 wzeay32.dll is not an appropriate repair command for an ordinary private runtime DLL. Regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components that provide DllRegisterServer. A normal application support DLL generally does not need registration.

Do not assume every error is a driver problem
Generic driver updates will not restore a missing application file. Repair the program first, then investigate drivers only when the evidence connects the failure to a device or driver change.

- The full path of any

If the error started after a software or driver change, System Restore may help:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Choose Open System Restore.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
If a clean reinstall still fails, the program may be loading another copy from an unexpected directory or may have an unresolved dependency. At that point, use reputable dependency-analysis tools or contact the application’s official support rather than trying additional downloaded DLLs.

Is wzeay32.dll a Windows file?
