Xbox Achievement Rarity Explained: Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic

Xbox’s documented achievement rarity categories are Rare and Common, while Mythic marks completion of a game’s original achievements. Epic and Legendary are not values in the reviewed GDK rarity enum.

Xbox does not document Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic as four steps on one achievement-rarity ladder. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit (GDK) lists only Unset, Rare, and Common as rarity categories. Mythic is a separate award for completing a game’s original achievements, while Epic and Legendary are not values in the reviewed GDK rarity enum.

What do Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic mean on Xbox?

The labels do not form a single official Xbox tier system. They refer to different things—or, in the case of Epic and Legendary, are not defined as categories in the reviewed Microsoft GDK rarity documentation.

  • Rare and Common are the two named achievement-rarity categories in Microsoft’s GDK enum; the same enum also has Unset.
  • Mythic is a game-completion marker announced by Xbox, not another unlock-prevalence band.
  • Epic and Legendary do not appear as values in that GDK enum. This does not establish that no Xbox game or other service ever uses those words in another context.

What does Rare mean on Xbox achievements?

Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes rarity in relation to how many players unlocked an achievement. However, two Microsoft pages give different Rare cutoffs, so the published thresholds should not be treated as one settled boundary.

Microsoft source Rare Common
GDK XblAchievementRarityCategory enum (page last updated November 6, 2025; reviewed in the gdk-2510 view) 0–10.9% 11.0–100.0%
GDK XblAchievementUnlockEvent page (page last updated November 6, 2025; reviewed in the gdk-2604 view) 9% or less Otherwise

The unlock-event page describes the rarity percentage as the number of users who unlocked the achievement divided by the number of unique users of that title. Since Microsoft’s two pages disagree on the Rare cutoff, use the displayed percentage as context rather than assuming a universal threshold from these definitions.

What is a Mythic achievement?

Xbox announced Mythic Achievements on September 29, 2026, saying the feature was beginning to roll out to Xbox Insiders. A Mythic award marks completion of a game’s original achievement list: later achievements added through DLC or updates are not required. Xbox also says Mythic status remains once earned.

The announcement says eligible games that players had already completed—including Xbox 360 titles—had received Mythic status. It does not establish that the feature is generally available to all players, so availability may depend on the rollout. Read Xbox Wire’s announcement.

How is TrueAchievements’ rarity score different?

TrueAchievements is a third-party service with its own rarity-adjusted score, commonly discussed as TA Ratio or TA score. That score is not the official Xbox Rare/Common category: the Xbox category concerns achievement unlock prevalence, while TA Ratio is TrueAchievements’ separate scoring system for achievements and gamers. Xbox Wire discussed the service and its ratios in a 2014 interview, and covered the historical context of Xbox rarity integration in 2016; those articles describe third-party scoring, not a Microsoft definition of additional rarity tiers.

How to interpret an achievement’s rarity label

  1. Check the achievement’s displayed unlock percentage. That percentage helps describe how common the unlock is among users of the title, as defined on Microsoft’s unlock-event page.
  2. Identify who supplied any score or label. Rare/Common refers to Microsoft’s documented categories; a TA Ratio or TA score belongs to TrueAchievements’ system.
  3. Treat Mythic as a completion award. It concerns finishing the original achievements for a game, not how uncommon one individual achievement is.
  4. Do not infer an official Xbox ladder from Epic or Legendary. Those terms are absent from the reviewed GDK rarity enum, but may have other uses outside that definition.
