If Xbox party chat has no audio on your Windows PC, first work out which direction is failing: you may be unable to hear other people, they may be unable to hear you, or both. Then check the headset’s physical controls, Windows device selection and the Xbox app or Game Bar’s per-app audio settings before trying repairs. These steps cover common causes, but no fix is guaranteed for every headset, driver, account or service issue.

The Xbox app for Windows and Xbox Game Bar (opened with Win + G) are related but distinct parts of the PC experience; party controls and labels can vary by app version. This guide is for Windows PC party chat, not console chat or separate voice services such as Discord or Steam.

Identify what is not working

Symptom Start here
You cannot hear party members Windows output device, Xbox/Game Bar volume and output routing, headset chat balance, and each member’s volume.
Party members cannot hear you Microphone mute, Windows microphone permission, selected input device, and microphone test.
Neither direction works Check both input and output, headset or controller connection, app permissions, and whether the party itself is working.
Game audio works, but party audio does not Check per-app routing and volume, party controls, and headset game/chat balance.
No sound works anywhere on the PC Treat it as a general Windows audio problem first, not an Xbox-only issue.
Bluetooth connects but chat is silent or changes audio quality Confirm the active Windows input and output devices and test another connection path if available.

If the problem affects several people, you cannot join a party, or the error follows your account to another device, check Xbox party-chat troubleshooting and current Xbox service availability before changing PC settings. If only one person is inaudible, check that participant’s mute state and individual volume, then test another party.

Try the quick, low-risk checks first

  1. Check the headset’s volume and physical mute controls, including an inline switch, microphone boom, controller button, or headset game/chat balance wheel.
  2. Confirm that the correct headset or speakers are selected in Windows for output, and the correct headset microphone is selected for input.
  3. Check Xbox party controls for mute indicators and participant volume. Make sure you are in the intended party rather than a game-chat channel.
  4. Leave and rejoin the party, then close and reopen the Xbox app or Game Bar. If you changed a privacy setting, restart the app before testing.
  5. If practical, test another headset or a wired connection. This helps separate a Windows or app issue from a headset, wireless dongle, Bluetooth profile, or controller connection problem.

If you cannot hear party members

Choose the right Windows output

In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under Output, select the device you actually want to use: headset, speakers, monitor, or controller audio, as applicable. Then open Volume mixer. Under Apps, find the Xbox app or Game Bar if it is listed. Make sure it is not muted, raise its volume, and check its Output device. An app can be routed to a different device from the system default, so changing the main Windows output alone may not fix party chat. Microsoft’s app-audio guidance covers this per-app routing check.

If the Xbox app is not in Volume Mixer, open or rejoin the party and check again; it may not appear while it is not producing audio, or the relevant control may be associated with Game Bar. Check both where applicable.

On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, then use App volume and device preferences to inspect app volume and routing. Labels and availability vary with Windows version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; PCs still running it may need different menu labels and no longer receive standard security updates. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting for version-specific guidance.

Check party and headset controls

In the party overlay, look for muted speaker indicators and check the volume for the specific person you cannot hear. Also check whether the headset has a separate chat-volume or game/chat mix control: game sound can be normal while chat is turned down. Exact party labels and layouts can change between Xbox app and Game Bar versions; use the controls shown in your active party rather than relying on a fixed screenshot path.

If party members cannot hear you

Allow microphone access

In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps may not appear as individually selectable Store apps, so the desktop-app permission matters for this workflow. Close and reopen Xbox or Game Bar after changing access. See Microsoft’s microphone permission instructions.

On Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone and check device and app access. On a school- or work-managed PC, parental-control software or policy may control these options. If a toggle is unavailable or turns itself off, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Select and test the microphone

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the microphone on the headset you are using. Webcams, monitors, USB devices, controllers and Bluetooth headsets can all offer competing inputs.
  3. Check that the input level is not at zero, then use Windows’ microphone test if available. Speak normally and confirm Windows detects the input.
  4. Check the headset’s mute switch, boom position, inline control and controller mute button. Disconnect or disable unused microphones temporarily if the wrong one keeps being selected.

If Windows cannot detect the microphone, Xbox settings are unlikely to solve it. Check the connection, device power, USB port or cable, Bluetooth or wireless pairing, controller connection, and manufacturer driver. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide provides additional checks.

Check the connection type

  • USB headset: Confirm it is connected and selected under Windows input and output. If it has a companion app or dongle, make sure its selected devices agree with Windows.
  • 3.5-mm headset: Check that the plug is fully seated in the correct jack. If the PC has separate headphone and microphone sockets, a compatible splitter may be needed. Test the headset on another suitable device if possible.
  • Bluetooth headset: Select the headset explicitly as both input and output where appropriate. Bluetooth devices can expose different audio modes or routes when the microphone is active; this is a possible routing issue, not a universal defect. Testing wired audio or another headset can isolate it.
  • Wireless headset with dongle: Check that the dongle is connected, the headset is paired to it, and both Windows and any headset software use the intended device.
  • Headset connected to a controller: Confirm the controller is connected to the PC and that Windows recognizes the controller’s audio path. Try connecting the headset directly to the PC if its design permits.
  • Monitor or HDMI audio: Windows may route sound to a monitor or display device instead of the headset. Re-select the intended output and inspect app-specific routing.

For Xbox-specific headset checks, see Microsoft’s chat-headset troubleshooting.

When game sound works but party chat does not

That symptom narrows the search: the PC’s general audio path is probably working, but chat may be routed, muted or balanced separately. Check, in order:

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  4. Reopen Xbox/Game Bar and test the party again.

Do not try to stop or alter unrelated services. Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting also covers audio services and device drivers.

Repair the Xbox app only if the issue is app-specific

Try app recovery after checking devices, mixer settings and permissions. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Xbox, open its advanced options if available, and select Repair. This is the lower-impact option. If it fails, Reset may clear local app data or require you to sign in again. Reinstalling is a later step, not the first response to an incorrect output route. The availability of these buttons and their effects depend on the app package and Windows version. Microsoft’s Store-app repair and reset guidance explains the general process.

Update or roll back the audio driver

If the trouble began after a Windows or driver update, or Windows no longer detects the headset, open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Try the available driver update, then restart Windows. If the issue began immediately after an update, check the device’s properties for Roll Back Driver; it may not be available. If needed, reinstall a suitable package from Windows Update or the laptop, motherboard, headset or audio-device manufacturer. Avoid generic third-party driver-updater utilities. Microsoft also documents low-volume and driver checks and missing audio-device troubleshooting.

If no PC audio works, use the broader Windows sound troubleshooting flow and its audio troubleshooter rather than continuing with party-specific changes.

When the problem points to Xbox, the account or the network

If you cannot join a party, see a connection error, or the issue follows your Xbox account across devices, local headset routing is less likely to be the whole cause. Check Xbox service status and follow Microsoft’s party-chat troubleshooting or party troubleshooting. Avoid port-forwarding, firewall-disabling or command-line network changes unless the specific error and current official guidance call for them; they are not first-line fixes for a party that is connected but silent.

If another headset works on the same PC, the original headset, its dongle, controller path or audio profile is implicated. Check the device maker’s setup and firmware guidance before deciding the hardware needs replacing.

Quick Recap

Final checklist

  • Is the failure incoming audio, outgoing microphone audio, or both?
  • Are headset mute, volume and chat-balance controls set correctly?
  • Are the intended Windows output and input devices selected?
  • Is Xbox/Game Bar unmuted and routed to the right output in Volume Mixer?
  • Does Windows have microphone access, including desktop-app access?
  • Does Windows detect the microphone, and does the party show the correct mute and participant-volume states?
  • Have you reopened the app, rejoined the party and tested another headset or connection?
  • If the issue spans devices or concerns joining the party, have you checked Xbox service and party guidance?
