Xbox App Not Working on Windows 10? Try These Fixes

Start by confirming Windows 10 version 22H2 or later, then work through Store updates, account checks, app repair, and Gaming Services fixes.

If the Xbox PC app is not opening, signing in, or installing games on Windows 10, first check your Windows version: Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 or later as a requirement for the current app. Press Windows + R, enter winver, and check the version shown. If the PC is below 22H2, update Windows before trying app repairs. This guide is for the Xbox PC app—not Xbox Game Bar or the discontinued Xbox Console Companion. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app requirements also list 150 MB for the app itself and a 720p display; neither figure covers the storage or hardware a particular game needs.

Use the symptom that matches your problem to choose where to start:

  • App will not open, closes, or gets stuck loading: restart Windows, update apps, then repair the Xbox app.
  • Sign-in fails, or Game Pass games are missing: check the Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts, subscription ownership, and game availability.
  • Downloads stall, games will not launch, or Gaming Services is requested: update or reinstall Gaming Services.
  • Microsoft Store is also failing: troubleshoot Store and Windows components rather than treating it as an Xbox-only problem.

Try the lower-risk fixes first and stop once the app works. Avoid registry cleaners, manual deletion of Windows app folders, and scripts copied from forums.

1. Restart Windows and install pending updates

A full restart can clear a stuck app state or finish a pending update. Close the Xbox app, restart the PC—not just sign out—and test the app again. If the problem remains, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, install available updates, restart if prompted, and test again.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Also check whether Microsoft Store opens. If it does not, or other Store apps cannot install, the cause may be Store, account authorization, or Windows rather than the Xbox app alone. Microsoft’s Windows Store app troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Windows and Store before moving to repair or reinstall steps.

2. Update Microsoft Store and the Xbox app

On Windows 10, open Microsoft Store > three-dot menu > Downloads and updates > Get updates. The exact labels can vary slightly by Store version. Install available updates, including for Xbox, then restart Windows if an update requests it. A Store update matters because the Xbox app relies on Store-delivered components.

If Microsoft Store is missing, search for it from Start. Store access can be restricted on a work or school PC, and signing into Windows with a local account rather than a Microsoft account can affect Store availability. See Microsoft’s guidance for when you can’t find Microsoft Store; ask the device administrator before attempting to bypass a work or school policy.

3. Check which account owns the game or subscription

The Windows sign-in, Microsoft Store sign-in, Xbox profile, and account that owns a game or Game Pass subscription can be different. A mismatched account can make a subscription game appear unavailable, prevent an installation, or leave the library incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the Xbox app, sign out and back in with the Xbox profile you intend to use.
  2. Open Microsoft Store and check that it is signed in to the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or subscription.
  3. Confirm that the Game Pass subscription or game belongs to the account currently in use.
  4. After changing accounts, restart the PC before testing again. Avoid switching accounts while a download is in progress.

If a game is still missing, availability can depend on region, compatibility, family settings, account authorization, or a required restart after a Windows update. Some Store scenarios also have a 10-device limit on the Microsoft account. Check Microsoft’s app-finding and installation guidance and its explanation of device delivery problems. Do not change the Store region as a generic fix: region changes can affect apps, games, Game Pass, and account balances; see Microsoft’s region guidance.

4. Repair the Xbox app, then reset it if necessary

Repair is the less disruptive option: it attempts to fix the app without clearing its local app data. If that does not help, Reset clears local app data and may remove cached settings or sign-in state, so you may need to sign in again. Reset is not the same as deleting installed games, but do not assume it will preserve every game’s local state or rediscover every installation, especially on another drive.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select Xbox, then Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, open Xbox, and test the symptom.
  4. If it still fails, return to the same screen, select Reset, and sign in again when needed.

If Advanced options is not available, or the app still will not open, continue with Store troubleshooting. Microsoft describes Repair and Reset as Windows app recovery options in its app install and removal troubleshooting guidance.

5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

If Store downloads or Xbox updates appear stuck, clear the Store cache with Windows’ built-in command. Press Windows + R, enter wsreset.exe, and select OK. A blank command window may appear; Microsoft says it normally closes after roughly ten seconds and Microsoft Store then opens automatically. Reopen Xbox and test again. Details are in Microsoft’s Store installation troubleshooting steps.

If the command errors, does nothing, or Store still will not open, the issue may involve Windows system files, account authorization, administrator policy, or a damaged Store installation—not just cached data.

6. Update or reinstall Gaming Services for game failures

Gaming Services is a likely dependency when the Xbox app redirects you to install it, a game installation stalls, a Game Pass game installs but will not start, or the app reports errors such as 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Those codes are documented in Microsoft’s Windows 10 Gaming Services troubleshooting article.

  1. Open Microsoft Store and search for Gaming Services.
  2. Install it or apply an available update.
  3. Restart Windows, open Xbox, and retry the affected installation or game.

If only one game fails, first check that game’s requirements, installation location, permissions, and publisher support. A single-game failure does not by itself show that Gaming Services or the Xbox app is damaged. A cloud-gaming problem may instead involve network quality or service availability.

Advanced last resort: Microsoft’s Gaming Services workaround

Microsoft’s KB5004327 documents a more invasive workaround for the specific Gaming Services failures above. It removes Gaming Services packages for all users and deletes related service registry keys. This is not a routine quick fix: use it only after the Store reinstall path fails and only if you are comfortable with administrator PowerShell and Windows services. Create a restore point or backup first, use an administrator account, and stop if PowerShell reports access or registry errors. The article is an older Windows 10 support document, so do not apply its procedure to unrelated errors.

After the documented removal, restart the PC and reinstall Gaming Services when Xbox or Microsoft Store prompts for it. If you are unsure what a command will remove, do not run it; contact Microsoft Support instead.

7. Reinstall the Xbox app only after the other fixes

If updating, account checks, Repair or Reset, and Store-cache reset did not help, reinstall the app through Microsoft Store. Open Store, go to Library or My Library (the label depends on the Store version), find Xbox, and select Install. Restart Windows and sign in again.

Reinstalling can replace a damaged Xbox app package, but it does not necessarily fix Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, Xbox Identity Provider, Windows Update, account authorization, or corrupted system components. If games are stored on a secondary drive, do not delete their folders while troubleshooting; reinstalling Xbox may not automatically rediscover those installations. Microsoft lists app reinstalling among its Store app recovery steps.

8. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter

For Store-related failures, Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, select Windows Store Apps, then select Run the troubleshooter. It may be absent or limited on some updated systems. If it is unavailable, do not substitute an unofficial repair utility.

When to stop troubleshooting the Xbox app

  • Microsoft Store and several Microsoft apps fail: focus on Store, Windows Update, account authorization, or Windows components; contact Microsoft Support if the built-in steps do not help.
  • Only one game fails: investigate that title’s requirements, installation, and publisher support before reinstalling the entire Xbox stack.
  • Sign-in fails across devices: investigate the Microsoft account or service rather than repeatedly resetting the PC app. If the issue appears widespread, check official Xbox or Microsoft service-status channels; a service outage is not established by these symptoms alone.
  • Work or school PC: ask the administrator whether Store, Xbox authentication, or Gaming Services is blocked by policy.
  • Windows 10 S mode: Microsoft notes that playing games may require switching out of S mode. Do not switch casually; leaving S mode is generally irreversible.
