Xbox is not removing screenshots or game clips. The change is that captures kept in the Xbox network library are subject to deletion after 90 days. To keep a copy, back up important captures to OneDrive or export them to an external storage device—and check that the transfer completed.
What Xbox changed—and what it didn’t
Xbox announced the 90-day retention policy on September 27, 2023. It concerns captures stored on the Xbox network, not every copy of a clip you may have. Xbox says its Captures app can show which network captures are marked for upcoming deletion. The policy is an established storage rule, not a newly announced 2026 change. - Xbox network captures: Cloud-hosted copies in the Xbox capture library; these are the copies subject to the 90-day policy.
- Local captures: Files stored on a console or PC. Do not assume a local file is the same copy as one in the Xbox network library.
- Backups: Copies exported to OneDrive or an external drive are separate from the Xbox network copy. OneDrive remains subject to its storage limits and service policies.
- Shared copies: A capture already downloaded to a PC or posted to a social platform is outside the Xbox network library, though the availability of that separate copy depends on its storage location or service.
The change is about retention and backup, not the basic ability to take screenshots or record gameplay. Capturing, uploading or sharing, backing up, and editing are separate steps.
Check which console captures are at risk
- On your Xbox, open My games & apps.
- Select See all, then open Apps.
- Open Captures.
- Review captures stored on the Xbox network and check for items marked for upcoming deletion.
- Back up any capture you want to keep.
The menu path and deletion-status guidance come from Xbox’s Captures-app announcement. The policy was announced in September 2023; do not infer a universal calendar deletion date for every file. Use the status shown for your captures.

Back up existing clips and screenshots
Xbox’s console workflow supports backing up captures to OneDrive or an external storage device, including bulk management. Menu wording may vary with console updates, so follow the backup prompt shown in the Captures app.
- Open the Captures app using the path above.
- Select the option or prompt to learn more about backing up captures.
- Choose OneDrive or an external storage device.
- Select the captures to transfer, using the bulk-management option if available, and confirm.
- Let the transfer finish. For a large transfer, avoid turning off the console or disconnecting the drive while it is in progress.
- Check the destination itself: open the files in OneDrive or from the drive to confirm the copies exist and play.
Starting a transfer is not the same as verifying a backup. If a file matters, make sure it is present and playable in its destination before relying on it.

Turn on automatic uploads for future captures
To have new captures upload to OneDrive automatically, open Settings > Preferences > Capture & share > Automatic uploads and enable the OneDrive option. Xbox documented this setting in its Capture & share release notes.
Automatic uploads help with future captures; do not assume they will recover older files already marked for deletion. Check OneDrive after enabling the setting, and make sure your Microsoft account has enough available storage. If uploads do not appear, check OneDrive directly and confirm that the console is using the intended account.

Choose OneDrive, an external drive, or both

For especially valuable footage, keep two copies, organize them by game or date, and open a sample from each transfer. OneDrive and an external drive solve different problems; neither is automatically a complete backup on its own.
What if a backup is slow or fails?
- OneDrive is full: Free space or use an external drive instead. Do not count a capture as backed up until you can find it at the destination.
- A large library is still syncing: Allow time, then check OneDrive directly. During the initial preview rollout, Xbox warned that collections exceeding 1,000 captures could take days to appear in OneDrive; that was a rollout observation, not a guarantee about current transfer times. - Files appear in unexpected folders: Preview notes in 2023 described temporary placement in generic Pictures and Videos folders. Check those locations if an older transfer seems missing, but do not assume this is the current universal folder layout. Xbox Insider notes from August 2023.
- Uploads error or captures stop working: Confirm the console is updated, check the destination account and retry. Xbox later documented a fix for an issue that could prevent captures from uploading to OneDrive; that historical fix is not evidence that a current general outage exists. Xbox Insider notes from January 2024.
Other preview notes documented early limitations involving 4K/HDR automatic uploads and a capture bug immediately after launching a game. Those were historical preview issues, not established current limitations. August 2023 preview notes and January 2024 preview notes document those reports.

PC captures follow a different workflow
Do not apply the console network-library rule automatically to every PC capture. Xbox’s April 2024 update described Game Bar clips and screenshots appearing in a PC game hub while remaining locally stored on the PC. If you captured with Game Bar, locate and back up the local PC files separately rather than assuming they are managed by the console Captures app. Xbox’s PC game hubs update.
