Microsoft Xbox corporate vice president Kareem Choudhry reportedly left the company on April 5, 2024, after roughly 26 years there. Windows Central reported the departure, citing sources familiar with the matter; Microsoft’s public materials reviewed for this account do not independently announce his exit. The news is historical, not a new 2026 departure.
Who was Kareem Choudhry at Microsoft?
Choudhry was a Microsoft corporate vice president (CVP) in the Xbox organization. The title denotes an executive role; it does not mean he was Xbox’s chief executive or overall head.
A Microsoft Research biography said he joined Microsoft in 1998 as a software engineer on the Outlook team and moved to Xbox in 2005. In 2021, it identified him as the CVP leading xCloud Gaming, then Microsoft’s name for its cloud-gaming effort. By the time of the 2024 departure report, his remit was described as Xbox Emerging Technologies, also referred to as XEmTech.
Why his departure mattered to Xbox
Choudhry’s career connected several areas of Xbox platform development. Microsoft Research described his work in xCloud and Xbox engineering; Windows Central associated his leadership with backward compatibility, Xbox Cloud Gaming and emerging gaming technologies, including AI. These are areas he helped lead or was associated with—not projects that the available sources establish he created or delivered alone.

That breadth helps explain why the news drew attention: it involved a senior leader linked to both the evolution of Xbox’s platform and newer technology work, rather than a purely commercial or studio role.
What was reported about his exit?
Windows Central’s April 5, 2024 story said that day was Choudhry’s final day at Microsoft and that he had completed approximately 26 years with the company. TechRadar later summarized the report, also giving April 5 as the departure date. MediaPost subsequently referred to him as Xbox’s former head of emerging technology and said he left in April 2024.

Windows Central’s sources characterized the exit as amicable and circumstantial, and said it was not caused by the wider Xbox reorganization. That is attributed reporting, not a public explanation from Choudhry or an official Microsoft statement. The sources cited here do not establish his exact reason for leaving or provide a formal confirmation from Microsoft.
What happened to his team?
According to Windows Central, the Xbox Emerging Technologies organization was moved into the broader Xbox hardware organization led by Roanne Sones. The report said an internal memo described the move as intended to accelerate innovation. It also reported that Xbox Experiences and Platforms teams were created or reorganized under Ashley McKissick and Kevin Gammill, with a remit to improve the Xbox and Windows user experience.

This describes a redistribution of teams and reporting lines, not evidence that Xbox’s cloud, compatibility or emerging-technology projects were canceled. The reporting does not attribute the creation of the Experiences and Platforms organization to Choudhry’s departure.
Was he part of the Xbox layoffs or leadership shake-up?
His exit occurred amid a period of Xbox organizational and leadership change, which can make the events appear to be one action. The original report drew a distinction: its sources described Choudhry’s departure as amicable and unrelated to the broader reorganization, even as his former organization moved under hardware. The available evidence does not support calling his departure a layoff or saying he was fired as part of a purge.

Later executive changes—including Xbox chief marketing officer Jerret West’s June 2024 departure, referenced in subsequent coverage—belong to the broader timeline, but do not establish why Choudhry left.

What does the 2026 Xbox context add?
Later developments show that Xbox continued changing its leadership and investing across hardware, cloud, AI and gaming platforms; they do not explain the 2024 exit. In a February 2026 announcement, Microsoft named Asha Sharma EVP and CEO of Microsoft Gaming. An editor’s note on that announcement says the organization became known as XBOX and Sharma’s title became CEO XBOX on April 23, 2026. Microsoft’s later GDC 2026 materials also discuss ongoing hardware and gaming-AI work.

Those subsequent initiatives should not be read as evidence that Choudhry remained involved after leaving or that his departure caused the later structure. A LinkedIn profile is available, but the information surfaced in the sources reviewed is not sufficient to establish a complete, authoritative account of his post-Microsoft career.
What is confirmed—and what remains attributed?
- Reported departure: Windows Central said Choudhry’s final day was April 5, 2024; TechRadar and MediaPost later echoed the April 2024 departure.
- Documented earlier career: Microsoft Research identifies his 1998 start at Microsoft, 2005 move to Xbox and 2021 xCloud leadership role.
- Not independently announced in the public materials reviewed: Microsoft’s own published materials establish his earlier role but do not announce his departure.
- Still attributed to reporting sources: The precise final-day detail, characterization of the exit, and internal team moves come from the Windows Central report rather than a located Microsoft departure announcement.
Choudhry’s reported exit was significant because of his long tenure and links to major Xbox technology efforts. But the available reporting describes an individual, amicable departure during a wider period of change—not a confirmed firing or a proven cause of Xbox’s later organizational shifts.
