Error 0x80070570 usually means Windows cannot read or process a required file or folder because the data is corrupted or unreadable. When it appears while installing or updating an Xbox game on a PC, the cause may be an incomplete download, damaged Xbox or Microsoft Store data, Windows system-file corruption, security-software interference, or a problem with the destination drive. The same-looking code on a console needs separate handling: Xbox 360 documents 80070570 (without 0x) as a console error, while Microsoft’s detailed 0x80070570 documentation concerns Windows.
Quick answer
- Windows PC: restart, update Windows and Microsoft Store, repair or reset Xbox and Store, retry the installation, test the destination drive, then run DISM and SFC.
- Xbox console: record the complete code and use Xbox’s official error-code search. Do not assume the Windows diagnosis applies to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Do not begin by deleting protected folders such as
WindowsApps, editing the registry, disabling antivirus permanently, or factory-resetting a console.
What error 0x80070570 means
Microsoft identifies 0x80070570 as ERROR_FILE_OR_DIRECTORY_CORRUPTED. In practical terms, Windows cannot read, extract, verify, or otherwise process a file or directory needed by an update or installation. Microsoft lists corrupted download-cache files, component-store corruption, disk or file-system errors, antivirus interference, and interrupted downloads among the possible causes. The code does not identify one specific Xbox fault, and it does not prove that a hard drive has failed. The surrounding symptoms determine which layer to test first.

Before changing anything, note the device, exact code, game or app, whether the failure occurs during download, installation, update or launch, the destination drive, and whether other Store or Xbox downloads work. Microsoft does not publish one universal current article treating 0x80070570 as the same error across every Xbox platform.

Fix 0x80070570 on a Windows PC
1. Restart and retry once
Restart the PC, then retry the installation or update. A restart can release locked files and complete pending servicing work; Microsoft notes that a restart may be required after Windows updates before Store apps can install (Microsoft Store installation guidance). If the error returns, continue rather than treating the restart as a permanent repair.
2. Install Windows and Microsoft Store updates
- Windows 11: open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart.
- Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates on current Windows 11.
- On some Windows 10 Store builds, use Microsoft Store > See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
Labels can differ slightly by Windows version and Store build. These update and troubleshooting options are covered in Microsoft’s Microsoft Store guidance.
3. Repair or reset the Xbox app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then retry the game installation.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset and sign in again if requested.
Repair attempts to fix the app without removing its data. Reset is more disruptive and can remove app settings or require you to authenticate again. Microsoft documents this Windows app sequence in its Repair and Reset guidance.

4. Repair or reset Microsoft Store
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store > Advanced options.
- Choose Repair and retry the download.
- Choose Reset only if Repair fails.
Xbox PC installations rely on several Microsoft components, so repairing the Store may help even when the visible error appears in the Xbox app. Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting page also covers built-in troubleshooting and reinstall options.
5. Cancel the failed job and make a clean retry
Cancel the pending installation or update, restart the PC, confirm that the destination drive is connected and has enough free space, and try again. If the Xbox app offers an uninstall option for a partially installed game, remove that incomplete installation before retrying. Interrupted or truncated downloads can leave unusable files, but do not delete arbitrary content inside C:Program FilesWindowsApps, WpSystem, or XboxGames; those protected locations may contain other installed games and permissions that manual deletion can damage.
6. Test the destination drive
Use these comparisons to narrow the cause:

Try installing a small title to another internal or external location if available. A successful install elsewhere points toward the original location, but the error alone is not proof of bad sectors or imminent hardware failure.

7. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Open Command Prompt as administrator (an elevated prompt), then run:

sfc.exe /scannowRestart and retry the Xbox installation. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC checks protected system files. DISM can appear paused while it works. SFC may report repaired files, no integrity violations, or files it could not repair. An unrepaired result means the problem is not resolved and may require further Windows repair or Microsoft Support. 8. Clear the Windows Update cache only when Windows Update is involved
If Windows Update itself is also failing with 0x80070570, use this Microsoft procedure in an elevated Command Prompt:

net start wuauservRestart Windows and retry the update. This removes potentially corrupted Windows Update download files; it is not a universal cache reset for Xbox game installations. Do not run it merely because an Xbox game failed unless Windows Update is part of the same problem.
9. Check security software without leaving protection off
Microsoft lists antivirus interference as one possible cause when Windows extracts update packages. Update your security product and check its quarantine or blocked-events history for Xbox, Store, Gaming Services, or update files. If the vendor supports a temporary diagnostic exclusion, follow that vendor’s instructions, retry once, and restore protection immediately. Never install a third-party “repair” utility offered as a fix for this code.

What to do when the error appears on an Xbox console
On Xbox 360, Xbox Support has a dedicated page for 80070570. For Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, record the complete code, including any additional status digits, and use the official Xbox error-code search. Check Xbox service status before repeatedly reinstalling a game or resetting the console.

Use Microsoft’s current power-cycle and reset instructions rather than an unverified menu path. A factory reset should be a last resort, after backing up anything important and confirming that the issue is actually console-wide. If Xbox presents reset choices, understand the distinction between Reset and keep my games & apps and Reset and remove everything before selecting one.
What not to do
- Do not edit the registry as a first-line fix; unsupported changes can make Windows or Store problems worse.
- Do not take ownership of or delete
WindowsApps,WpSystem, or Xbox installation folders casually. - Do not permanently disable antivirus or other security protections.
- Do not assume the drive is dead without testing other locations and ordinary file operations.
- Do not factory-reset a console before identifying the platform, recording the complete code, checking service status, and protecting your data.
When to contact Microsoft Support
Escalate when DISM or SFC cannot repair Windows, multiple known-good drives show the same failure, ordinary file copies produce errors, a console repeatedly fails system updates, or one title still fails after a clean retry while Xbox services are operating normally.
