On June 16, 2020, a third-party widget called YouTube Gamebar Overlay was reported as a way to watch YouTube videos inside the Windows 10 Xbox Game Bar while playing a game—or using another application. It was not a native Microsoft or YouTube feature, and current documentation does not establish that the specific widget is still available or supported.
What the YouTube Gamebar Overlay did
The widget put a YouTube video in a resizable panel within Xbox Game Bar. The idea was practical: keep a walkthrough, tutorial, or troubleshooting video visible without repeatedly switching away from a game. Contemporary coverage said it could also be used over other applications, and that users could resize the panel and pin it to Game Bar favorites for quicker access. WinBuzzer reported the widget on June 16, 2020.
“Picture-in-picture” describes the effect, but the distinction matters: this was a panel inside the Game Bar overlay, not a verified, independent always-on-top desktop window and not YouTube’s own browser picture-in-picture mode.
It was a third-party widget, not an official YouTube integration
Microsoft made Xbox Game Bar and its widget framework; the YouTube overlay itself was described as a hobbyist-created third-party widget. The contemporary report said it did not let users sign in to Google or YouTube. It should not be mistaken for a feature launched or endorsed by YouTube, or for a native Windows YouTube player.

That distinction shaped what it could do. The report described entering or pasting a video URL, rather than relying on a complete YouTube experience with account access. Its built-in search reportedly malfunctioned or crashed at launch, making a direct link the more practical route.
How Game Bar widgets fit in
Xbox Game Bar is a Windows gaming overlay opened with Win + G. Microsoft describes it as a customizable interface with widgets that can be used without leaving the current game. The Microsoft Game Bar overview explains the overlay, while its Widget Store documentation describes browsing, installing, viewing, updating, and removing widget applications.

Game Bar’s role was to host the widget. That hosting model did not make every widget a Microsoft-made or Microsoft-maintained product. Microsoft’s general setup guidance also notes that widgets depend on a supported Windows version and an appropriate Game Bar version; users were directed to update Game Bar through the Microsoft Store. Those general requirements do not establish compatibility for this particular third-party widget today.

- Search the Microsoft Store for YouTube Gamebar Overlay and install it if listed.
- Open Xbox Game Bar with Win + G.
- Open the widget menu and select the YouTube widget. Pin it to favorites if you want quicker access later.
- Enter or paste a YouTube video URL, then resize the panel to suit the game or application.
Microsoft’s Game Bar widget quickstart documents opening Game Bar and loading widgets in its interface. The steps above reflect the reported experience of this specific widget at the time; current menus or availability may differ.
Limitations and likely points of failure
- No account sign-in: the launch report said Google/YouTube login was not supported, so personalized account features were not part of the described experience.
- Search problems: search was reported as unreliable or prone to crashing. If the widget is available and works, a direct video URL avoids depending on that search interface.
- Third-party reliability: the widget was described as hobbyist-created. Its maintenance and long-term stability were not established.
- Screen and system resources: a video panel occupies part of the game display, and video playback can compete with a game for system resources and network bandwidth.
- Playback may fail: compatibility with today’s YouTube behavior, restricted videos, and different video types is unverified. Login, age, or geographic restrictions are possible reasons a particular video might not play, but there is no confirmed compatibility matrix for this widget.
If the widget does not appear, check whether it is still listed in the Microsoft Store or Game Bar’s widget area, whether it is installed or enabled, and whether Game Bar has an available update. Microsoft’s Widget Store documentation explains how installed widgets are managed; it does not confirm that this YouTube widget remains listed. If a panel disappears, reopen Game Bar with Win + G and check whether the widget is still installed or pinned.

Microsoft’s widget distribution guidance cites Windows 10 build 18956 or later in the context of default sideloading for widget applications. That is a developer-distribution detail, not proof that YouTube Gamebar Overlay works on every later Windows build—or on Windows 11.

Is the widget still available?
Its current status is unverified. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that Game Bar has a widget ecosystem, but the available documentation does not confirm a current listing, maintainer, Windows 11 support, or ongoing compatibility with YouTube for this particular widget. If you want to check, search the Microsoft Store and Game Bar’s widget listings directly. Avoid assuming that an old download or third-party mirror is current or trustworthy.

Alternatives if you need YouTube beside a game
- Use a browser window: it is the straightforward choice for YouTube search, sign-in, playlists, and subscriptions, though it is not integrated into Game Bar.
- Use browser picture-in-picture: a supported browser may offer a floating video mode. Its controls and behavior depend on the browser and YouTube’s current implementation; it is separate from the 2020 Game Bar widget.
- Use another display or device: a second monitor or phone keeps the video off the game screen, at the cost of extra hardware or another device.
- Check Game Bar’s current widget listings: another widget may be available, but availability should be verified in the Store rather than assumed.
