Core is now Essential, Standard is now Premium, and Ultimate is still Ultimate. For your library, choose Essential if you mainly want online multiplayer for paid games and a smaller rotating catalog; Premium if you want a much broader library but can wait for Xbox-published games; and Ultimate if you’ll use its largest catalog, select day-one releases, cloud access, and bundled services. What changed: Core and Standard have new names
Xbox’s October 2025 plan update moved Core subscribers to Essential and Standard subscribers to Premium. Ultimate kept its name. The older names may still appear in past guides, but the current US plans are Essential, Premium, and Ultimate.
The best tier depends less on a headline game count than on whether the games you want are in the live catalog, whether you need paid-game multiplayer, and how much you value new releases, cloud play, and included services.

Which tier fits the games you want to play?
Choose Essential for paid-game multiplayer and a modest catalog
Essential is the lower-cost fit when online console multiplayer for supported paid games is the main reason to subscribe and the included selection is enough for you. Xbox describes the US plan as including 50+ games across console, PC, and supported devices, in-game benefits, rewards, and 5 cloud hours per month. Microsoft Store listed it at $9.99 per month in the US when accessed October 3, 2026; that price is market- and date-specific.
You do not need a subscription just to play free-to-play games online: Xbox says multiplayer for free-to-play titles is open to every Xbox player. Essential’s multiplayer benefit matters for other supported online games.

Choose Premium when a larger catalog matters more than day-one access
Premium raises the listed catalog to 200+ games across console, PC, and supported devices, with 10 cloud hours per month and online console multiplayer. Xbox says Xbox-published games join within one year of launch. That wording is not a promise that every game arrives exactly 12 months after release; select games and exclusions apply.
Choose Ultimate if you will use its extras
Ultimate lists 500+ games and 15 cloud hours per month, plus online multiplayer, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Xbox advertises select new games on day one. The stated day-one benefit for new Xbox-published games has a Call of Duty exclusion, so do not assume every Xbox release—or every Call of Duty title—is included at launch.

Ultimate makes the most sense when you expect to use several of those benefits, rather than paying for a larger catalog that contains few games you actually want or services you will not use.
How to choose by your library, platform, and play habits
- List the games you expect to play. Check whether they are in the live Game Pass catalog for your region and platform, and whether they are likely to leave before you finish them.
- Decide whether you need online multiplayer. Free-to-play multiplayer is available without a subscription; for supported paid games, Essential and higher include online console multiplayer.
- Set your release-date requirement. If you want select eligible games on day one, Ultimate is the plan that advertises that benefit. If waiting is acceptable, Premium’s within-one-year timing may suit you. If neither timing feature matters, choose based on the catalog and other benefits.
- Count cloud hours you will actually use. The US listings show 5 hours monthly on Essential, 10 on Premium, and 15 on Ultimate. Cloud gaming also requires a supported device, game, and region.
- Value the extras honestly. Count EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics only if you would use them. Do not treat bundle names as proof that every related game or benefit is included; check the plan details.
- Compare the current checkout price in your market. The only exact current US monthly figure established here is Essential at $9.99 as listed by Microsoft Store on October 3, 2026. The current official page did not provide reliable exact recurring US prices for Premium or Ultimate, so check Xbox’s live local plan page or checkout rather than relying on older prices. Prices and introductory offers can change, vary by market, and subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled.
What to know about catalog access and cloud gaming
Catalog access can change
A subscription gives access only while it is active and while a game remains in the service. If your subscription expires or a title leaves the catalog, your subscription access to it ends. Before choosing a tier, compare the current catalog with the specific games you plan to play rather than treating 50+, 200+, or 500+ as a guarantee about particular titles.
