Xbox Game Pass Is Still More Expensive in 2026—Is Ultimate Worth $22.99?

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is cheaper than its $29.99 peak but still costs more than before the 2025 increase. Here is which tier is worth paying for in 2026.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is worth $22.99 per month only if you actively use what makes it different from the cheaper tiers. It is a strong deal for players who move between Xbox and PC, play several included games, want eligible Xbox releases at launch, use cloud gaming, or already pay for benefits such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew, or Ubisoft+ Classics. It is not the automatic best choice for someone who mainly wants online console multiplayer.

There is also an important date correction to the headline. In the United States, Ultimate is still more expensive than it was before October 2025, but it is no longer at the $29.99 monthly price introduced on October 1, 2025. Microsoft reduced it to $22.99 on April 21, 2026. This assessment uses U.S. pricing and plan details available on August 12, 2026.

The short answer: choose based on your next month of gaming

For most players, the right answer is not simply yes or no to Game Pass. It is a choice among four plans:

  • Choose Ultimate if you will play at least one valuable launch-day game, use both Xbox and PC, stream games regularly, or would otherwise pay for several bundled services.
  • Choose Premium if you want a large console catalog, online multiplayer, and cloud gaming but can wait up to one year for Xbox-published games.
  • Choose Essential if online console multiplayer and a smaller rotating selection are your main needs.
  • Choose PC Game Pass if you play only on PC and want PC access to the catalog, EA Play, and eligible day-one releases.

If you are not actively playing included games, cancel recurring billing or subscribe only during the months when you have something specific to play. A Game Pass subscription provides access; it does not permanently add catalog games to your library.

Why the price feels confusing

Game Pass has had two major price changes that should not be collapsed into one:

  1. On October 1, 2025, Ultimate increased from $19.99 to $29.99 per month. PC Game Pass increased from $11.99 to $16.49.
  2. On April 21, 2026, Microsoft reduced Ultimate to $22.99 and PC Game Pass to $13.99.

Microsoft announced the April change in its Xbox Game Pass update. So Ultimate is now $7 cheaper per month than its 2025 peak, but it remains $3 more expensive than the old $19.99 price.

That difference is $36 more per year before tax than the pre-October 2025 price:

  • Former Ultimate annual cost: $19.99 × 12 = $239.88.
  • Current Ultimate annual cost: $22.99 × 12 = $275.88.
  • Current cost above the former price: $36 per year.
  • Saving compared with the $29.99 peak: $84 per year.

PC Game Pass is also still above its former price. At $13.99 per month, it costs $167.88 per year before tax, compared with $143.88 at the old $11.99 rate.

Current U.S. Game Pass plans compared

The most useful difference between the plans is not the raw number of games. It is when you can play new releases, where you can play, and which extras you will actually use. Microsoft’s current Game Pass comparison should be checked before subscribing because prices, catalog availability, platforms, and regional terms can change.

Plan U.S. monthly price What matters most Best fit
Essential About $10 50+ games, unlimited cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, and Rewards points. No day-one new releases. Console players who mainly need multiplayer and a lower-cost catalog.
Premium $14.99 200+ games, unlimited cloud gaming with shorter waits than Essential, online console multiplayer, and new Xbox-published games within one year of launch. Console-focused players who want breadth but can wait for first-party games.
PC Game Pass $13.99 300+ PC games, eligible day-one releases, EA Play, in-game benefits, and Rewards points. New Call of Duty games are excluded from day-one access. Players who use a PC only and want PC catalog access plus EA Play.
Ultimate $22.99 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices; eligible day-one releases; EA Play; Fortnite Crew; Ubisoft+ Classics; online console multiplayer; better cloud quality and shorter waits; and enhanced Rewards earning. Multi-platform, cloud-focused, or heavy day-one players who will use the extras.

Essential’s regular price was not clearly exposed on the live Xbox pricing page during the research period; Xbox described it elsewhere as starting at approximately $10 per month. Treat that figure as approximate rather than as a guaranteed universal price.

The Call of Duty exception changes the Ultimate calculation

Do not interpret day-one Game Pass language as a promise that every major Xbox-owned franchise will launch in Ultimate. The current plan information specifically excludes new Call of Duty titles from day-one access on Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Microsoft said future Call of Duty games would arrive in those plans during the following holiday season, approximately one year after launch. Existing Call of Duty titles already in the catalog remain available. In other words, this is not a removal of every Call of Duty game; it is a delay for future releases.

That distinction matters if Call of Duty is the main reason you would subscribe. Ultimate can still make sense for a player who also expects to play other eligible launch-day releases, but it is a weaker proposition if you would subscribe for only the next Call of Duty and then stop playing.

Day-one games are still the clearest way to justify Ultimate

The simplest value test is whether you would otherwise buy an eligible new release during the month. If the game would cost more than $22.99 and you intend to play it immediately, one launch-day title can justify the monthly fee on paper. The calculation is strongest when you also play other catalog games or use the included extras.

It is not a guarantee that every highly anticipated Xbox-published game will be available to every subscriber on every device. Eligibility depends on the plan, platform, region, and the specific title. PC Game Pass includes day-one releases for PC, with the Call of Duty exception. Premium receives new Xbox-published games within one year rather than at launch. Essential does not include new releases on day one.

The catalog is still substantial. For example, Xbox Wire’s June 2026 announcement featured additions including Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Planet of Lana II, EA Sports FC 26, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, and Call of Duty: Vanguard. The June 2026 Xbox Wire announcement also illustrates why you should check the listing for your exact plan and platform instead of assuming that every catalog addition applies universally.

Catalog games can also leave. Xbox states that availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform. If a game you want is about to leave, you may be better off finishing it quickly, buying it at the subscriber discount if that option is offered, or accepting that a recurring subscription is not worthwhile for that title.

Cloud gaming is a value multiplier—but only for the right setup

Ultimate is more compelling when Game Pass is not limited to a console. Xbox supports cloud gaming on a range of supported phones, tablets, TVs, browsers, PCs, consoles, and other devices. Exact availability depends on the region, device, plan, and game library. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate all include unlimited cloud gaming, but Ultimate offers the best stated quality and shortest wait times among the tiers.

In February 2026, Xbox began rolling out up-to-1440p, higher-bitrate streaming for Ultimate members on supported Xbox consoles and in supported regions. Xbox’s February 2026 update describes the rollout. The wording matters: up to 1440p is not a promise that every game, connection, or device will stream at that resolution.

Cloud gaming is worth counting in your personal calculation only if you will use it. You still need a compatible device, a controller where the game and device require one, and a sufficiently stable internet connection. Broadband costs, data caps, latency, and queues can erase the practical benefit for some players. An optional Xbox Wireless Controller can make phone, tablet, browser, or TV play more practical, but it does not reduce the Game Pass price or solve an unreliable connection.

How to value the bundled services

Ultimate includes three benefits that can be meaningful, but only when they replace spending you would genuinely make:

  • EA Play: access to EA games and member benefits. Value it at what you would actually pay for EA Play, not automatically at a full standalone sticker price.
  • Fortnite Crew: access to multiple Fortnite passes plus monthly V-Bucks, according to Xbox’s plan description. This matters most to a player who already buys or would otherwise maintain Fortnite Crew.
  • Ubisoft+ Classics: a collection of more than 50 games. It has real value for someone who wants those Ubisoft titles, but little value for a player who would not use them.

The same principle applies to Xbox Rewards. Xbox advertises enhanced earning for Ultimate—up to four times Essential’s earning potential—and says members can earn up to $100 per year in the Store. Rewards points are not guaranteed cash-back: eligible markets, age rules, qualifying activities, terms, and point values apply. Treat Rewards as a possible offset, not as a reason to assume that Ultimate is free.

A practical break-even test

Use this calculation before you subscribe:

Realistic value = games you would otherwise buy + services you would otherwise pay for + cloud or platform value you will actually use − the monthly subscription price.

Example 1: the heavy day-one player

You use an Xbox and a PC, plan to play an eligible new release at launch, and expect to sample several other games. Ultimate is likely worth $22.99 for that month. The launch-day access is the main justification; cross-platform access, cloud gaming, and the bundled benefits strengthen the case.

Recheck the title’s plan eligibility before release. If the game is a future Call of Duty title, it is not a day-one Ultimate benefit under the current rules, so do not use the normal launch-day calculation.

Example 2: the casual console multiplayer player

You mostly play games you already own with friends online and occasionally try a catalog game. Ultimate is probably unnecessary. Essential covers online console multiplayer and provides a 50-plus-game selection. Premium is the more sensible upgrade if you want a much broader catalog and cloud gaming, or if waiting up to one year for Xbox-published games is acceptable.

Example 3: the PC-only player

You never use an Xbox console, do not need console multiplayer, and want PC access to the catalog, EA Play, and eligible day-one releases. PC Game Pass at $13.99 is the natural starting point. Paying $9 more per month for Ultimate—or $108 more per year before tax—makes sense only if its console access, superior cloud tier, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, or other benefits have real value to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 4: the backlog player

You have a large backlog and are not currently playing included games. Ultimate is a poor recurring expense, even if the catalog looks impressive. Subscribe for a specific release or a concentrated month of play, then turn off recurring billing so an unused month does not renew automatically.

When Premium is the better compromise

Premium is easy to overlook because Ultimate has the largest feature list, but it may be the best plan for a console player who wants breadth without paying for every premium benefit. At $14.99 per month, it is $8 below Ultimate. It includes 200-plus games, online console multiplayer, and cloud gaming with shorter waits than Essential.

The trade-off is timing. Premium receives new Xbox-published games within one year of launch, not necessarily on launch day. If you are happy to wait, the $96 annual difference between Premium and Ultimate can be more valuable than immediate access. If you repeatedly buy new releases at launch, Ultimate’s higher fee may be easier to justify.

When Essential is enough

Essential is the right answer when the subscription is mainly an online multiplayer pass with a modest catalog attached. It provides online console multiplayer, 50-plus games, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits, and Rewards points. It does not provide day-one new releases.

Do not upgrade to Ultimate simply because it contains more games. Upgrade only if you will use a specific Ultimate-only advantage: launch-day access to an eligible title, the larger catalog across your devices, the higher cloud quality and shorter waits, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, or enhanced Rewards earning.

How to subscribe without wasting a month

  1. Write down the games you will actually play. Include the release date and the platform you will use.
  2. Check the exact plan listing. Confirm whether the game is included on console, PC, or cloud, and whether it is available in your region.
  3. Check whether it is leaving soon. A game near the end of its catalog availability may not justify a full recurring month.
  4. Compare the alternative. If you would buy one eligible launch game for more than the subscription price, the month may already break even. If you would only play an owned game, it probably does not.
  5. Review recurring billing immediately. Xbox says recurring billing is enabled by default. In your Microsoft account’s subscription management area, turn it off if you intend to use Game Pass for a defined release window, and confirm the displayed expiration or renewal date.
  6. Reassess when the game is finished. Access ends when the subscription expires or when a title leaves the catalog. The subscription is not ownership, so buy a game separately if you want continued access without Game Pass.

Verdict

Ultimate is not a bad deal at $22.99, but the 2026 price reduction does not erase the 2025 increase. It is $3 per month more than the former price, and its value now depends more heavily on whether you use the service’s full bundle.

For a multi-platform player who will play eligible day-one games, cloud-stream frequently, and use EA Play, Fortnite Crew, or Ubisoft+ Classics, Ultimate can still be the most economical option. For a console multiplayer player, Essential is the safer default. For a console player who wants a broad catalog but can wait for first-party releases, Premium is the compromise. For a PC-only player, PC Game Pass usually makes more sense unless Ultimate’s additional benefits have concrete value.

The best money-saving strategy is to treat Game Pass as an active-use subscription: join for the months in which you have games to play, turn off recurring billing when appropriate, and do not pay for the largest tier while your backlog is keeping you away from the catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate still $29.99 per month?

No. Ultimate reached $29.99 per month on October 1, 2025, but Microsoft reduced the U.S. price to $22.99 on April 21, 2026. It is still $3 more per month than the former $19.99 price.

Do future Call of Duty games launch on Game Pass Ultimate?

Not under the current plan terms. Future Call of Duty games are excluded from day-one access on Ultimate and PC Game Pass and are expected to arrive around the following holiday season, approximately one year later. Existing Call of Duty titles already in the catalog remain available.

Do I need Ultimate for online console multiplayer?

No. Essential includes online console multiplayer, as do Premium and Ultimate. Choose Ultimate only when its catalog, day-one access, cloud advantages, or bundled services matter to you.

Do Game Pass games become permanently mine?

No. Game Pass provides access while your subscription is active and while the title remains in the catalog. Access ends when the subscription expires or the game leaves, unless you purchase the game separately.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: At $22.99, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is worth it for active, multi-platform, day-one, or cloud-focused players—not as a default upgrade for everyone. Start with the cheapest tier that covers your actual use, and subscribe selectively when the catalog justifies the monthly fee.
