Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The cancellation wave began after Microsoft’s October 2025 Game Pass restructuring. The sharp Ultimate price increase changed the value equation for casual players and subscribers who did not use the newly bundled Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ catalog or expanded cloud features. Reports documented a surge in cancellation and downgrade attempts, but no audited source has published an exact number of canceled subscriptions.
Microsoft later cut prices on April 21, 2026. That improved the calculation for some players, while a separate change—future Call of Duty games no longer launching in Ultimate or PC Game Pass—made the top tier less compelling for another important audience.
What triggered the cancellation wave?
The October 2025 price shock
Microsoft’s 2025 restructuring raised the monthly cost of Game Pass Ultimate by 50%. The new package added Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ titles and improved cloud-streaming features, but many subscribers did not use those benefits. For a player who mainly wanted a rotating library or occasional first-party games, the extra charge felt like paying for services they had not requested.
Why casual users reacted most strongly
Comments collected in contemporaneous coverage described $30 per month as difficult to justify, particularly for people who played infrequently or had no interest in Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft’s catalog. The increase turned Game Pass from an easy default subscription into a recurring expense that had to compete with buying only the games a player actually wanted.

The cancellation process became part of the story
Windows Central reported a sharp increase in cancellation and downgrade attempts and observed Microsoft’s cancellation page struggling to load under the traffic. Those observations and user comments demonstrate backlash and unusually high demand for cancellations; they are not a survey or a measured cancellation total.
Game Pass prices before and after the 2026 adjustment
Xbox Wire announced the new rates on April 21, 2026. Microsoft noted that prices vary by region, so the figures below are the U.S. monthly prices cited in that announcement.
| Period | Game Pass Ultimate | PC Game Pass | Notable change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before the October 2025 overhaul | $19.99 | Not stated in the cited material | Pre-overhaul Ultimate baseline |
| After the October 2025 overhaul | $29.99 | Not stated in the cited material | Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ titles and enhanced cloud features were added |
| Rate immediately before April 21, 2026 | $29.99 | $16.49 | Rates used as the comparison point in Xbox Wire’s price announcement |
| From April 21, 2026 | $22.99 | $13.99 | Prices reduced; future Call of Duty launches moved out of these tiers |
How many subscribers did Xbox lose?
There is no independently audited post-hike subscriber count in the cited official or executive material. Windows Central reported that Game Pass had grown to more than 34 million subscribers before the 2025 overhaul. That is a pre-restructuring reference point, not a current total.

Reports that Xbox lost “millions” should therefore be attributed to the executive or publication making the claim, rather than presented as a verified industry-wide count. The available evidence supports a sharp deterioration after the price and SKU changes, but not a precise number of cancellations.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma directly linked the decline to affordability:
“We had raised the prices 50% last year, and we were on the path to seeing a decay in subscribers, and so it had just simply become too unaffordable, and so we adjusted the price for players.”

In a separate memo quoted by Windows Central, Sharma said growth slowed and subscriber loss accelerated after the pricing and SKU changes. She added that acquisitions had grown and retention had improved since the price reduction, while warning that restoring durable growth would require more than one launch or one pricing decision.
What changed in 2026 besides the price?
Future Call of Duty games no longer launch in Ultimate or PC Game Pass
Under the April 2026 policy, future Call of Duty games will not be added to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on release day. They are scheduled to arrive during the following holiday season instead. Existing Call of Duty titles remain available.

This matters because day-one access to major first-party releases was a central reason many subscribers chose the most expensive tier. A player who subscribed primarily to play each new Call of Duty at launch now has to account for buying the game separately or waiting.

Microsoft is seeing early improvement, not a completed turnaround
An Xbox Wire employee memo said the Game Pass team had endured “8+ months of decline” before the service “started to grow again.” Sharma separately said acquisitions and retention were improving after the price reduction. Those statements are recovery signals, not proof that the subscriber base has returned to its pre-overhaul level.

The answer depends less on the headline price than on which benefits you actually use. Evaluate the service against your play habits rather than the full list of included perks.
Ultimate is easier to justify if you use several benefits
- You play often enough that a large rotating catalog replaces multiple game purchases each year.
- You use cloud streaming regularly and the available quality and limits suit your connection and devices.
- You actively use Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ content instead of treating them as unused extras.
- You value broad console-and-PC access and are comfortable with the new Call of Duty launch timing.
PC Game Pass may fit a focused PC library better
At the April 2026 U.S. rate, PC Game Pass costs less than Ultimate. It can make sense when you play primarily on Windows and do not need Ultimate’s broader console, cloud or bundled-service benefits. Check the current regional catalog and launch terms before subscribing, especially if a specific first-party release is your reason for joining.

Downgrading is sensible when your usage is narrow
Consider a lower-cost option when you mainly play on one platform, rarely use cloud streaming, or do not value Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ content. The 2026 reduction means a downgrade is no longer the only way to escape the 2025 price shock, but it can still align the bill with actual usage.
Cancel when buying games individually costs less
Cancellation is rational if you play only one or two games during a month, wait for discounts, or subscribe for a single launch and then stop. Rejoining later is often more efficient than paying continuously for months in which you do not play.
A practical stay, downgrade or cancel checklist
- List the games you realistically expect to play over the next three months.
- Separate benefits you use from benefits included only on paper: Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ titles, cloud streaming and cross-platform access.
- Decide whether day-one first-party access matters, then account for the delayed arrival of future Call of Duty games.
- Compare the applicable regional monthly price with the cost of buying your likely games outright.
- If the result is unclear, cancel before the next renewal and re-subscribe only when a specific release or backlog makes the subscription pay for itself.
What the cancellation reports prove—and what they do not
- Established: Microsoft raised Ultimate sharply in October 2025; coverage recorded a strong backlash, more cancellation attempts and difficulty loading the cancellation page; Microsoft later reduced prices.
- Not established: an independently verified count of cancellations, a definitive current subscriber total or proof that the 2026 recovery restored the old subscriber base.
- Still changing: regional prices, catalog composition, cloud-streaming conditions and the timing of future Call of Duty additions.
Bottom line
People canceled because the 2025 price increase arrived faster than the perceived value of the added benefits. Microsoft’s 2026 reduction addresses affordability, but the delayed arrival of future Call of Duty games changes the reason to choose Ultimate. Frequent players who use several features may find the revised price workable; light users and Call of Duty launch-day players have a stronger case for downgrading, buying games separately or subscribing only when needed.
